ADVENTURES IN FOX NEWS POLLING.... Fox News, the only outlet that conducts polls in which the questions are more interesting than the answers.

To be specific, here's what the poll asked: "What do you think President Obama would like to do with the extra bank bailout money -- save it for an emergency, spend it on government programs that might help him politically in 2010 and 2012, or return it to taxpayers?"

The basic assumption here, of course, is that the only reason Obama would want to spend money on the economy is to use the cash as a sort of political slush fund -- not simply saying that one disagrees with spending the money or thinks it's a bad idea, but that it is inherently illegitimate -- while saving the money or cutting taxes have purer motives.

Right. Poll respondents were effectively given three choices -- the president is either a prudent saver, a corrupt spender, or a friend to taxpayers. That the White House sees value in investing in the economy is characterized as necessarily fraudulent, just as Fox News' sister organization -- the Republican National Committee -- would like the public to believe.

The question quickly goes on the list of Fox News Polls' Greatest Hits, alongside:

* "Do you think former President Bill Clinton's meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il and securing the release of the two American journalists will encourage kidnapping of more Americans or not?" (Fox News poll, August 2009)

* "Barack Obama says he quit smoking cigarettes. Do you think Obama is still sneaking cigarettes at the White House or do you think he has completely quit smoking? (Fox News poll, June 2009)

* "Do you think the United Nations should be in charge of the worldwide effort to combat climate change and the United States should report to the United Nations on this effort, or should it be up to individual countries and the United States would be allowed to make decisions on its own?" (Fox News poll, April 2009)

* "How much do you think Barack Obama loves America?" (Fox News poll, June 2008)

* "Do you think illegal immigrants from Mexico should be given special treatment and allowed to jump in front of immigrants from other countries that want to come to the United States legally, or not?" (Fox News poll, April 2007)

* "Do you think the Democratic Party should allow a grassroots organization like Moveon.org to take it over or should it resist this type of takeover?" (Fox News poll, March 2007)

It's quite a "news" outlet.

Because for Republicans, any taxpayer money that doesn't go to benefit millionaires or corporations that contribute to the Republican party is by definition wasteful spending.

Fox has overlooked other good poll questions like:

At what point in Obama's presidency should he be impeached? Immediately, after the 2010 elections, never.

How great is Sarah Palin? Great, really great, best ever.

When Glen Beck cries, you want to... cry along, punch a liberal, buy gold and guns?

Sure! Why should the Cubans be the only group that gets frontsies? (Oh, it's because they don't have entrenched Republican Cuban-American congressional delegation like we do here in South Florida that can get things like the Cuban America Adjustment Act signed into law. I see.)

The message is pretty plain: spending money on programs that help Americans out of this economic pit will boost the Dems' chances in 2010 and 2012, so the way to help their side is to make sure we all stay broke and miserable. Thanks Fox, we knew that.

How can we "return" money to the taxpayers, when it was borrowed to start with? Funny how none of the options was to use it to pay down the debt. Listening to Republicans and the "liberal" media this year, I thought since January 20,2009 the debt was our most pressing problem brought about by the election of a Democratic President.

Just thinking outloud here...

We gave banks how many billions to stimulate lending, which didn't happen (yeah, yeah, yeah, it stopped the 'system' from failing and fed the money machine, bonus happy bankers)? I wonder what kind of economic stimulus could be had if, say, $5000 were sent to everyone who filed tax returns in 2007 and 2008? Everyone knows the rich don't buy shit (which is what the capitalistic society is built on (and daggers to thefirst person who gives me the textbook definition of capitalism. Shorter capitalism: you work, you make money, you spend money that hopefully goes to keeping someone else working [Nevermind our manufacturing base is slim]). How many Americans would spend that $5000 putting it back into the economy?

People's finances were gutted by Bush (gas at $5.00 a gallon, severe job loss, etc.) and I'm sure many need home repairs done, a new car, whatever. Real, average people drive the economy. Giving them real $$ to spend, along with further work on job creation, could jumpstart us nicely, with the added bonus of helping stocks when companies increase sales.

Sure, some of that money might go back into Wall Street by people getting their mortgages caught up, but stemming foreclosures, extending periods for people to find work is a real benefit for that homeowner as well as their neighbors. Every foreclosure lowers property values.

This constant concern for Wall St, big medicine, and everything but average Americans does how much for everyone in the grander scheme of our economic survival?

Not that job creation by the Feds is particularly likely to happen on the scale needed anyway. See Krugman this morning

What do you think Rush Limbaugh spends more time thinking about - having sex with young boys, having sex with young girls or taking large amounts of Oxycontin.

out of the 3 choices in the poll, only one makes Obama out to be a total douche. In Fox's world, THAT'S progress.

Hmmm. this might how we should structure the Bank Bailout of 2020. Give every taxpayer $5000 to catch up on their mortgages, pay their rent ahead or pay off their credit card debt. The money will still end up with the Wall Street Banks, but at least this way it will do some good for the rest of us along the way.

Since it looks like there won't be any real reform of Wall Street, we may as well plan ahead for the next economic meltdown.

"Save it for an emergency"???!

Because 10% unemployment, a crippled auto industry, empty storefronts on every main street, two wars in process, and crumbling infrastructure across the nation is NOT an emergency?? I mean, I realize they don't believe in global climate change, but still, aren't there enough things going on to count as an emergency right now?

Does Fox News want him to wait until space aliens invade, or something?

You forgot one:
"George W. Bush says he quit drinking alcohol and using recreational drugs. Do you think Bush is still knocking back drinks at the White House or do you think he has completely quit drinking?" (Fox News poll, May 2001)

Fair and Balanced, eh? Yeah, riiiiight.
