OBAMA MORE EFFECTIVE ON SPENDING CUTS.... When George W. Bush was in the White House, he'd do what lots of presidents would do: talk about cutting federal spending. Of course, there's a big difference between talking about something and actually doing it.

President Obama notched substantial successes in spending cuts last year, winning 60 percent of his proposed cuts and managing to get Congress to ax several programs that had bedeviled President George W. Bush for years.

The administration says Congress accepted at least $6.9 billion of the $11.3 billion in discretionary spending cuts Mr. Obama proposed for the current fiscal year. An analysis by The Washington Times found that Mr. Obama was victorious in getting Congress to slash 24 programs and achieved some level of success in reducing nine other programs.

Among the president's victories are canceling the multibillion-dollar F-22 Raptor program, ending the LORAN-C radio-based ship navigation system and culling a series of low-dollar education grants. In each of those cases, Mr. Obama succeeded in eliminating programs that Mr. Bush repeatedly failed to end.

"This is a very strong beginning for the president's efforts to shape a budget that invests in programs that work and that ends programs that don't," said Tom Gavin, a spokesman for the White House budget office. "The Congress has approved more than 60 percent of the president's proposals, and that's a high mark, that's a strong beginning."

It obviously helps that we have a Democratic president working with a Democratic Congress, but note that when there was a Republican president basically telling a Republican Congress what to do, GOP policymakers didn't cut spending as much as Obama did last year.

It's also worth keeping in mind that Republican lawmakers -- the ones who claim to be more aggressive when it comes to cutting spending -- also fought bitterly last year against every proposed reduction offered by the White House, most notably when it came to health care.

What's more, when the president reached out to Republicans over the summer, urging them to put together a list of spending cuts they'd like to see, the GOP caucus came up with $23 billion in proposed cuts over five years -- far less than the White House plan to reduce spending over the same period.

For all the complaining from the Tea Party crowd, there's an odd disconnect. These folks applauded a Republican president who increased the deficit and increased the size of government, but they literally take to the streets to denounce a Democratic president who has cut taxes, cut spending, and makes sure his proposals are paid for. Why throw a fit over the more fiscally responsible president?

Some people---well, many people---don't let facts get in the way of a good narrative.

"Why throw a fit over the more fiscally responsible president?"

Choose from one of the following:
1) He is a democrat.
2) He is not white.
3) He is a democrat.
4) He is not white.
5) All of the above in triplicate.

"Why throw a fit over the more fiscally responsible president?"

Because he's a Democrat? Because they are brainwashed to believe that when a Republican in in charge "Deficits don't matter". But the minute a Dem takes office it's the most important issue facing the country.

My question is this: Why does it matter what these people think? They aren't the majority, they have been wrong for years. Why do they get so much more play than the people who have been right about this for the last 10 year?

SadOldVet makes a good point. But I think it goes much deeper than that. The people who are carrying stupid signs and screaming "socialism", "fasism", "communism" don't really care about actual government policy. They are willfully ignorant people terrified of the modern world. They have a childlike view of the past as some Norman Rockwell utopia were men were men, women were women, and minorities (and gays) new their place. The GOP has convinced them that they are the party that reflects them, the "real Americans"; the democrates are viewed as foriegn and alien to "real America". They gullible, easily lead morons who would easily except a empty suit who talked to them as if they were children and spouted code words and scripture. I believe that if such a person suspended the constitution, declared martial law, and named his/her self President for life they would not only be okay with it they would embrace it.

The only thing they really care about is his skin colour. If this were 50 years ago, the tea baggers would be out in their white hoods.

Stop laughing at the Tea Party crowd, using them as intellectual foils, or trying to make sense over their specific positions. Obama is their issue, not fiscal responsibility; liberals are their issue, not good governance, and all of these issues are created solely to leverage real power. Rational discourse over policy never mattered with that crowd, so, treat them like they should be treated, a voting block of disaffected whites who want to bring on the Second American revolution.

Actually a lot of "conservatives" are pissed at Bush and the Republicans for their absolute failure to cut anything. When confronted they acknowledge Bush was a bust, but they shoot back that Bush isn't in office anymore and they have to deal with the "big spending democrat" who is. What we need to do is publicize Obama's cuts at every opportunity. I think some ads would be more effective than posts in "liberal" blogs preaching to the choir.

The lost issue in government spending is what did we get out of it? Bush inherited a surplus and left office with a 1.3 Trillion dollar deficit - what did we, the American people, get for that 1.3 trillion? He passed on 2 wars, Al Queda on the loose, more dependence on foreign oil, more uninsured , and an infective border security system (see this weeks 60 minutes online) . WTF did we get out of the 1.3 trillion?

Yes, between the facts and their mouths.

Posted by: bleh on January 14, 2010 at 1:50 PM | PERMALINK

Yeah, that's what Democrats are for, to put into effect the Republican policies that the Republicans can't be bothered with.

So will we see accomplishment on the nightly 'news' from CBS, NBC, or ABC ? If not, why not ? Whoops, I forgot ... those are Repiglican/ Corporate controlled ...

Why throw a fit over the more fiscally responsible president?

Cause he's a ni...ggardly librul when it comes to defense boondogles.

Black black blackity black black.

Wow, cutting LORAN-C is going to have a major effect on the US budget! The program costs $35 billion a year.

"Yeah, that's what Democrats are for, to put into effect the Republican policies that the Republicans can't be bothered with."

Hence our getting Welfare reform and balanced budgets not during 12 years of Reagan/Bush but during the Clinton administration.

Isn't this amazing? I'm sure if you presented a teabagger with these facts, they would say you were lying. I continue to be amazed at the way some Americans have this pre-programmed script playing in their heads and no amount of facts or contrary information will change those views.

Posted by: Sam Simple on January 14, 2010 at 2:39 PM | PERMALINK

I agree with Bernie that they would acquiese to those types of measures because they believe that those measures would not apply to "real Americans" just to all the "others".

That's after the supplementary budget increase and the stimulus raised spending. It's good, but your claim that Obama's "proposals are paid for" is a bit on the optimistic side. Almost everyone else reports that net federal borrowing is up greatly this year.

You are good at exposing the limits, so to speak, of Republicans; your praise for Democrats is sometimes, like today, ludicrous.

If he can't find enough excess in that $730B (or so) defense budget to both reduce the deficit and pay for real health care reform, we still have a problem.

Shockingly, the Obamits seem to have taken this fiscal responsibility thing SERIOUSLY.

A colleague of mine is the leading academic researcher in his field and, as such, gets grants from NIH and the whole alphabet soupt of federal agencies that fund health care research.

He got a call from the Obama transition team asking him to prepare a white paper to (i) identify waste and overlap in the various agencies he deals with and (ii) recommend changes to save money.

He did, was appointed to the transition team, and legislation to accomplish his recommendations has been introduced.

Walking the walk.

Ron Byers had it right, above. Publicize the Obama deficit reduction to the non-crazy Repubs. Ignore the crazies.

(And, for everyone who's first thought is, "what non-crazy Repubs?" shame on you. They are out there, and a lot of them, and they need to hear this.)

Washington Times points that out? Washington bloody TIMES??? The mind boggles.
