STEELE REDISCOVERS THE 'RACE CARD'.... Michael Steele's first year as chairman of the Republican National Committee has not gone well. There have been controversies surrounding his gaffes, his budget, his lucrative side deals, his mismanagement, and his tantrums. Talk of his ouster has been quite common, especially after Democrats went five-for-five in winning congressional special elections in 2009.

But in the new issue of the Washingtonian, Steele suggests his problems are not of his own making, but rather, are the result of racism.

Steele acknowledges that at times he has a tendency to take things too far. "And I get checked on that, just as when I was a young boy and I pushed the envelope too far and my Mama was there to check me."

But there's an edge to his voice when he talks about a double standard that he believes has been applied by his critics, and he posits racism as the cause: "I don't see stories about the internal operations of the DNC that I see about this operation. Why? Is it because Michael Steele is the chairman, or is it because a black man is chairman?"

It's unclear exactly who Steele is accusing of racism. As Greg Sargent noted, "Either Steele is suggesting the media gives more ink to the RNC's inner workings because a black man is chairman, or he's suggesting that fellow Republicans are leaking damaging info about the RNC because a black man is chairman."

That's right, and the difference matters. Either the RNC chairman is lashing out at the media for being racist, or lashing out at his own Republican colleagues for being racist. It'd be interesting to know which. Indeed, if Steele believes his own RNC team is engaged in race-based leaking, he should say so.

Either way, Steele's comments are curious. For one thing, he's generated more attention because he's always screwing up in some very high-profile way. If Tim Kaine had the same kind of self-destructive tendencies as the RNC chairman, he'd probably be in the news a lot, too. If memory serves, Howard Dean's tenure at the DNC sparked all kinds of media coverage when Dean would push the rhetorical envelope a bit.

For another, Steele has said, repeatedly, that he's offended by attempts to play the "race card." Is that no longer operative?

Isn't IOKIYAR the RNC motto? Geez Steve get with the program :) Posted by: firefall on February 9, 2010 at 2:17 PM | PERMALINK

The word "retard" comes to mind. And I can say that only because Rush Limbaugh approves.

Leave it to the party of old white bigots to hire a token black man who's completely incompetent.

Man, this is fun stuff! It just gets better and better every day.

Some will recall the tagline -- "Diana Ross IS Billie Holiday" -- from the 1970s movie, Lady Sings the Blues.

Michael Steele IS the race card.

"It's unclear exactly who Steele is accusing of racism."

The media, or his 'Republican colleagues'?

Wrong, and wrong: It's Obama; half white, foreign born, and jealous as hell of a REAL African-American. . .

Shorter Michael Steele: Pay attention to meeeee!

I am going to be as restrained as I can be... but this is the most mindless, ignorant, uninformed, comment that we have seen from Michael Steele so far and there's been a lot of competition for that prize."

If Michael Steele didn't exist, the DNC would have to invent him.

Posted by: Snarky Bastard on February 9, 2010 at 2:36 PM | PERMALINK

Steele could be green with pink polka dots and he'd still be the same dim-witted clown he is. I'm surprised that he's even aware that he "sometimes" needs "checking"...

Does Tim Kaine do anything? Not just anything newsworthy, but anything at all?

Posted by: Jamobey on February 9, 2010 at 2:37 PM | PERMALINK

I completely understand why the GOP hates Affirmative Action.

They are terrible at it.

Palin = Hillary
Steele = Obama

Any wonder why they think minorities just aren't qualified.

Jamobey, @ 14:37,

My guess would be that he spends a lot of time improving his harmonica playing in hopes of getting a job with a bluegrass group soon. I don't much like Warner as my Senator but, at least, he had been a good Governor and as full of energy as could get. Kaine... Waste of skin. I really don't know what Obama et al could have been thinking of, when they replaced Dean (Dean!) with this nothing.

Steele has apparently forgotten that, at this point in Howard Dean's tenure as DNC chair, every mention of his name was an opportunity for the cable shows to replay the "Dean scream" video. But then Dean helped engineer back-to-back electoral victories for his party. If Steele accomplishes the same for his party, everyone will forget all the stupid things he's done.

Interesting how talk of those special elections wasn't seen as any big deal, but as soon as Republicans win a few - all hell breaks loose that it means some big Move by an angry public is afoot. Interesting, isn't it?

Why? Is it because Michael Steele is the chairman, or is it because a black man is chairman

It's good that you provide a forum where Mr. Steele can come to read and answer to his plaint:

It is because an idiot is chairman--an idiot who can't shut up.

Posted by: Boolaboola on February 9, 2010 at 3:13 PM | PERMALINK

Just because you're black doesn't mean we can't call you an idiot - and Mr. Steele, you're an idiot.

Rule #137, The Matthews Gambit - Say incredibly stupid things. Then accuse the media of being soft on your opponent. As a result the media will rightly be afraid to press you on anything, and will trash your opponent, even if they have to fabricate a story.

If Steele's mother put him check when he was a boy, my question is who's his mama now?

Posted by: DTR on February 9, 2010 at 3:51 PM | PERMALINK

What the hell is going on with the superfluous use of the word 'retard' lately? I've seen it all day in blog comments, and even heard Stephanie Miller use it this morning.

Best I can gather is Rush Limbaugh said it and Palin somehow absolved his use, as if she's the arbiter of language. I'm just wondering how in the world this has spurred so called liberals and progressives into frequent and inappropriate use of an offensive term.

Do we take our cues from Rush and Palin now? Surely the offenders think they're being ironic, but they're not. They're just being ugly and offensive.

Let's cool it. We're better than they are, right?

Steele has been making a fool out of himself for years. I used to live in Maryland when he was in a few elections. He wasn't any better at it then. He put his foot in his mouth all the time. Why any one can take this man seriously is beyond me.

Posted by: Bonnie on February 9, 2010 at 4:35 PM | PERMALINK

My attention to an individual pretty much stops as soon as they start referring to themselves in third person.

Posted by: terraformer on February 9, 2010 at 4:45 PM | PERMALINK

Speaking of Maryland elections, Steele also accused attendees at a debate at Morgan State in Baltimore (an African-American state college) for throwing Oreo cookies at him. There is no actual evidence that this actually happened.

This from a guy who also used bumper stickers with "Steele Democrat" on them and bussed in homeless people from Philadelphia to hand out misleading flyers in Prince George's County along the same lines when he ran for Senate in 2006.

The man does not know what the truth is - he makes it up as he goes along - and the GOP and the media enable him.

doubtful completely agrees.

Posted by: doubtful on February 9, 2010 at 5:01 PM | PERMALINK

I remember the late Steve Gilliard's complaints about Steele. It always seemed so excessive back then, to keep talking about this voluble boob from Maryland, such as the faked Oreo incident, especially when he couldn't even elected twice in his own state.

Now I see once again just how prescient Steve was. Some people, like Paris Hilton, are whores for fame, and they will do anything to stay in the spotlight, forever.

The major contrast between Steele and Kaine isn't skin color, it's approach. Steele has chosen a high visibility approach, in part because of his personality and in part because there's not clear elected party leader (vs. Obama on the Democratic side.)

Steele's approach has it's advantages - I know a lot of what he's been up too, and he's gotten a lot of visibility. What Kaine's been up to besides being one of the ball fumblers in MA I have no idea, and I like to follow politics.

You go for visibility, you typically get the upsides and the downsides.

I knew he was an idiot back when he was running for Senate and addressing a Jewish organization in Montgomery County. He referred to abortion as a "holocaust."

I grew up in MoCo, and I knew that'd go over like a lead balloon, and I'm a shiksa!

When Steele stops behaving lie the court jester - then we will get to judge whether his own party is beign rasists toward him.

Where is his response the the Tea Party's call for reinstitution of Jim Crow Laws?
