'THE AIR COVER IS COMING'.... With the debate over health care reform nearing a conclusion, opponents of the pending proposal are tapping their near-limitless resources, running attack ads geared towards undecided and/or vulnerable Democrats.
Last week, many wondered if there would be any pro-reform air cover, or whether the home stretch would be dominated by attack ads in key areas. Greg Sargent reports today that reform supporters are, in fact, gearing up for one last push.
Americans United for Change is set to announce a $500,000 ad campaign in the districts of multiple House Dems across the country, a source familiar with the plans says. The labor federation AFSCME is preparing a "significant push in the weeks ahead," according to an AFSCME official, who adds that ads could air before and after the House votes on the Senate bill, providing cover for Dems who find themselves under assault after voting Yes.
Americans for Stable Quality Care, a pro-reform coalition which is working with the labor powerhouse SEIU, is finalizing plans for a major buy in multiple districts, an official familiar with the plans says.
And MoveOn is currently polling its members to ask whether the group should support the Senate bill. If the answer is Yes, the group will mount an "aggressive grassroots campaign, including ads," one source involved in the planning says.
One official told Greg, "The air cover is coming."
Not a moment too soon. The Chamber of Commerce, the insurance industry, and their allies are launching a campaign that will invest $10 million (on top of the millions already spent) to kill reform and make hand-wringing Dems that much more nervous. Those who want to fix the dysfunctional system may not be able to keep up with an equally ambitious response, but it sounds like they can keep it close.
This, coupled with progress activism, may very well make the difference between success and failure.

"The Chamber of Commerce, the insurance industry, and their allies are launching a campaign that will invest $10 million (on top of the millions already spent) to kill reform and make hand-wringing Dems that much more nervous."
Which begs the question. Why are Dems moving so fucking slowly? Pass. The. Damn. Bill.

$500,000 vs $10,000,000?!

Talking Points Memo has some updated info on Massa - looks like he was up to his old tricks while in the navy - bigtime.

Why the fuck is the Chamber of Commerce against health care reform? Wouldn't the bill lower costs for a lot of businesses? Is there anything they are for that the Republicans are against - or do they just take their marching orders from republican talking points?

I agree, just pass the damn bill.
As Noted earlier, I was at teh Dr's office and CNN was on talking about health care. What they said may ahve been good but the 'Breaking News' display said, 'Health care, you will probably pay more and get less.'
Then the anti-health care ad (dark omnious voice warning of "billions more in taxes" etc) comes on which comined with the CNN discussion, made a strong argument for the public to hate the idea.
So, there may some ads defending the idea. Well, hopefully it will not be too little too late. Remember spring advertisements Clinton ran against Dole. Dole's advisors thought they could catch up at the end and he never did.
With these ads, they better be fast and furious to make up for the months of negative advertising. Fortinuately, it's Congress that has to vote, not the public and they can, "JUST PASS THE DAMN BILL."

Posts like these depress me as they are reminders that American voters get a lot of their political information from ads that seek to trigger emotional responses instead of a merit-based evaluation of the issues.
Murkans just don't do citizenship any more (if they ever did).

I got a pro-health reform robo call today. I did not catch what group it was from.

And where has the push been for the past year?

I think some "ground invasion" ahead of air cover is already here. You folks see spreads on pro-health-care-reform demonstrators in your paper too today? It looks good.
As for HCR itself, it needs to show cost cutting. That measure to limit "profit" by HI companies, what sort of thing is that shaping up to, and how effective would it really be?

I got a hysterical Glen Beck send up YouTube paid for by SEIU with a very professional attempt to send it viral. If you get it, do not neglect to send it on.
