BECK'S ATTACKS ON CHURCHES, 'SOCIAL JUSTICE' GET NOTICED.... We've had a fairly prominent role in highlighting Glenn Beck's criticism of churches who value "social justice," so I'm pleased to see it start to get some additional attention. Take this report in the New York Times, for example.

Last week, the conservative broadcaster Glenn Beck called on Christians to leave their churches if they hear preaching about social or economic justice, saying they were code words for Communism and Nazism. [...]

In attacking churches that espouse social justice, Mr. Beck is taking on most mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic, black and Hispanic congregations in the country -- not to mention plenty of evangelical churches and even his own, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

If you're just joining us, Beck told his radio audience to "look for the words 'social justice' or 'economic justice' on your church web site," and then "run as fast as you can" if the words are there. He added, "Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes!"

When this caused a stir, Beck returned to the subject and doubled down, insisting that the notion of social justice is "a perversion of the Gospel," and "not what Jesus would say." It prompted the Rev. Jim Wallis, a prominent evangelical figure and president of the Sojourners network, to suggest that Christians steer clear of Beck in the future.

It seems especially inconvenient that Beck, a Mormon convert, seems to be condemning his own chosen faith tradition. Philip Barlow, the Arrington professor of Mormon history and culture at Utah State University, told the NYT, "One way to read the Book of Mormon is that it's a vast tract on social justice.... A lot of Latter-day Saints would think that Beck was asking them to leave their own church."

Just today, Beck seemed to realize that he may have gone just a little too far with this one. The deranged host told his followers that "some people don't mean Marxism" when they use the phrase "social justice." He added that social justice in which "you empower yourself to go out and help the poor" is permissible in his book.

How gracious of him.

Beck has obviously said some insane things over the years, but he usually targets his perceived enemies and those he considers part of an elaborate conspiracy to control/destroy civilization. By targeting houses of worship and religious traditions that commit to social justice -- which is to say, most of the world's major faiths -- Beck appears to have pushed his luck. Matt Yglesias compared it to the time "McCarthy decided to go after the Army," which sounds about right.

For its part, the Catholic League and Bill Donohue, who tend to be pretty assiduous when it comes to incidents like these, seems completely unconcerned about Beck's remarks. In a statement issued today, Donohue said, "Beck didn't say Christians should abandon their religion. He recommended shopping around to find a more conservative parish if one is dissatisfied with hearing left-wing sermons. Nothing new about that."

In a statement issued today, Donohue said, "Beck didn't say Christians should abandon their religion. He recommended shopping around to find a more conservative parish if one is dissatisfied with hearing left-wing sermons. Nothing new about that."

That is NOT what Beck said in any way, shape or form.

It's good to see that Donohue's record as a lying grifting servant of evil continues unblemished.

That an intellectual fool like Glenn Beck is considered a "conservative thinker" is proof of how bad off they are. Glenn Beck is intelligent, Dennis Miller is funny, you get the idea.

Actually, there is no such thing as a "conservative thinker" since those people lack the basic equipment to do such a thing - you know, things like a neocortex?

Beck will never change. There is nothing new here. We all know what he's about. Why waste your wonderful writing on him Steve? I am not here to read about Beck.

From where I stand, in the shadow of the cross of Jesus, Mr. Beck has taken a bold stand toward presenting a more accurate interpretation of the teachings of Jesus.

As Jesus taught us:
- It is easier for a camel to fit thru the eye of a needle than for a poor man to go to heaven.
- Do unto others before they do unto you.

"...not what Jesus would say."

Um, but then how do you explain Matthew 5-7 Mr. Beck?

Posted by: phi6 on March 12, 2010 at 1:50 PM | PERMALINK

Not that mine is necessarily the prominent view of these institutions, but I've come to assume that the Roman Catholic church's main business is sodomizing little boys, and the social ministry of the Mormon church is to sexually abuse little girls.

Note that the word 'cortex' literally means 'cork.' And, I think we can all agree, Glen Beck + many in the right wing certainly have a surfeit of cork where there brains should be.

I am not at all surprised by this. They are only concerned with attacks they perceive as coming from the left.

"If thine eye offends thee, pluck it out".

That's all that Beck is saying.

Maybe it's supposed to be, Glenn Beck is funny and Dennis Miller is intel...

Oh, never mind.

Sounds like Donohue advocates "church-shopping" -- perhaps I have heard wrong, but I have heard that the Catholic Church is not in favor of that.

Posted by: dr2chase on March 12, 2010 at 2:18 PM | PERMALINK

It sounds like Beck's religion is run-of-the-mill Randian sociopathy. This shouldn't surprise since the bravado on the Right is all about morality being the triumph of the rich and powerful. Even those righties who profess belief in God are usually just paying lip service to something they know little and care less about. Real religion is what you pay attention to. Right-wingers pay attention to money, success, and sneering at losers.

Posted by: walt on March 12, 2010 at 2:30 PM | PERMALINK

Back the other day when you posted about this and mentioned that the Catholic League and Bill Donohue wouldn't be pleased, I predicted you would be wrong. Because "the Catholic League and Bill Donohue," i.e., just Bill Donohue, doesn't give a rat's ass about social justice.

"Beck didn't say Christians should abandon their religion. He recommended shopping around to find a more conservative parish if one is dissatisfied with hearing left-wing sermons. Nothing new about that."

Just more willful ignorance from the conservative mindset. What Donohue means to say is, "If you're a Real American, you kow what Glenn Beck means."

Meanwhile, I'm trying to imagine what a left-wing sermon would sound like. Probably something akin to:

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Posted by: chrenson on March 12, 2010 at 2:42 PM | PERMALINK

It is hardly a surprise that Donohue found "Social Justice" to be leftist: he pretends that Vatican II and the long tradition that led up to it never happened. He is, rather humorously, one of those Catholics who pick and choose what they want to believe of the teachings of the church.

I'm beginning to think Beck undid his hemline and is now fraying into a ragged mess! No one will want to wear his fashions now that we see his alterations are inferior to the fabric of our heritage of democratic ideals!

What an unclean spewer of demagoguery he has become - almost like a relapse back to his alcoholic days. Is he losing his sanity right before our eyes? -Kevo

Beck is correct. You cannot be a Christian and a conservative Republican. God has known that for decades.

Posted by: gdb on March 12, 2010 at 2:55 PM | PERMALINK

I don't know why, but after reading this, "Jonestown" immediately flashed into my head.

Posted by: 2Manchu on March 12, 2010 at 3:01 PM | PERMALINK

How about giving Beck's airtime to someone who can at least forward the conservative messege in first person, rather than through agenda-bending interpreters who have to paraphrase Beck's message so we lowly may marvel of it.

But isn't Beck right, really?

I mean, I have known since birth that I was evil and that I would bend the moments of my life toward an "elaborate conspiracy to control/destroy civilization", so fairly I was branded with a D on my voter card and now spend my days purposing with other liberal thinkers to confound the humanitarian and altruist intentions of the Republican Party. Aye, it is true, when I can fit it in around work, little leaque, laundry, and all the other mundane chores that get in the way of my liberal evilness.

"If thine eye offends thee, pluck it out".

What hasn't Beck been offended by? And why does he still have both his eyes?

Posted by: DH Walker on March 12, 2010 at 3:02 PM | PERMALINK

Um, but then how do you explain Matthew 5-7 Mr. Beck?

"Oh, that's just something Jesus did say - it's certainly not something he would say."

And Beck would say this with a straight, earnest face, too.

Posted by: DH Walker on March 12, 2010 at 3:07 PM | PERMALINK

Ah c'mon everybody! It doesn't matter what Beck says. All that is important is that he is rich. That's all that matters in our society today. The actor, the doctor, the deranged CEO, the drug dealer, the real estate speculator, the banker, etc. are valued by what they are worth, not what they do. Lil' Glenn is worth a lot, and thus matters and thus demands our respect.

Who cares what this carnival barker thinks about anything? Really, Steve, leave it alone. I'm more concerned about the crap coming out of the mouths of DeMint and the other Republicun politicians.

Who cares what this carnival barker thinks about anything? Really, Steve, leave it alone.

I can't speak for Steve, but I would be able to care a lot less about Beck if his wealth came from the lottery rather than the millions of gullible morons who make up his audience.

Just imagine how unbelievably impressionable these jackasses already have to be, and then imagine the number and character of, say, the craziest 1% of them. Maybe they'll eventually invest in some cheap real estate in Guyana to start their utopia, but until then, we all have to deal with them and their bullshit.

Leo,

I watched Beck's show the other day and he spent a fair amount of time on Father Coughlin. He said Coughlin was anti-Semitic, pro-union, left of FDR, and published a paper called "Social Justice" Therefore he said there is no way they should be compared. And if you pay for the "Extreme" Beck website you can learn more on a special documentary he has prepared.

I find Beck a unique character but see a number of people in him. Howard Beale in Network, Lonesome Rhodes in A Face in the Crowd (Both great and important movies), Joe McCarthy, and Oral Roberts come to mind. I'm a bit too young for Father Coughlin but definitely see the similarities.

Nothing new about Donohue being a partisan hack rather than a "religious" leader.

Posted by: fry1laurie on March 12, 2010 at 4:12 PM | PERMALINK

Donohue is filth. Just sayin'.

(Heh. It goes without saying that Beck is, too.)

Posted by: cmac on March 12, 2010 at 5:07 PM | PERMALINK

Gummo said essentially what I was planning to say, and said it better. I would like to be a bit more specific in that Donohue's statement brings into question his own personal religion. Does he really consider himself to be Catholic? And if so, why? Because he performs all the rituals, or because he lives a life that the Catholic Church ordains?

Posted by: Texas Aggie on March 13, 2010 at 12:01 AM | PERMALINK

The book of Mormon is a vast tract on social justice? Well, not if you're gay or female or trying to sleep in on a weekend morning.
