ABOUT THAT EARMARK 'BAN'.... The headline reads, "House GOP Adopts Earmark Moratorium." Given that Republicans have been in mad, passionate love with earmarks for years, it seemed like an interesting change of pace.

In an election-year appeal to voters frustrated with Washington, House Republicans promised Thursday not to stuff any of this year's spending bills with pet projects for their districts.

The promise comes a day after House Democrats banned earmarks to for-profit companies, ending a practice that in many cases created a cozy ''pay-to-play'' culture involving lawmakers and businesses whose Washington lobbyists often use campaign donations to help assure access.

Before anyone gets too impressed, though, it's worth paying attention to the fine print.

The House GOP ban is for the rest of 2010.

Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-Calif.), the ranking Republican on the House Appropriations committee, told reporters the caucus's move was "only temporary." Rep. Steven LaTourette (R-Ohio) conceded that the so-called ban is "all about November," in apparent reference to the midterm elections.

So, when we see reports about Republicans forswearing earmarks, after quadrupling the number of earmarks during their years in the majority, there's reason for some skepticism.

What is amazing is that Republicans believe they can openly tell their supporters that the is "only temporary" and "all about November" wink, wink, nod, nod, and not worry about the press telling their constitutents. They are probably right. Any bets that anybody in the "working" press except Rachel calls this rank bullshit for what it is?

-And the standard disclaimer when confronted with Republican mis and malfeasance, hypocrisy, and sordid sex scandals, is :"That was before I came to congress."

They already got the headline they wanted: full credit for a half-measure that actually started with the Democrats.

Nothing else matters.

It's always the same with these republicans. They spend like drunken sailors running up huge deficits when in power but as soon as they are out of power they turn into deficit hawks, screaming at dems to not spend another penny until they balance the budget and reduce the deficit...which they themselves created.

It's been true with every republican administration for the past 30yrs. They try to "make sure" dems have no money to do any good for the people with policies that would help not only the economy but the population as a whole.

They even published this tactic years ago and called it the "Two Santa Claus Theory".

Republican conservatives tried to take the nation via a coup during FDR's administration and failed, but since then they have slowly began turning our nation into a corporatocracy with 30yrs of Reaganomics producing a nation where 1% control more wealth than the bottom 95% of the people. A nation run by wall street banksters and their army of lobbyists.

We will never have a functioning democracy again until every republican and their dem cohorts are run out of government. They don't believe in government 'by' the people...only 'for' the people as they see fit. One only needs to review the rhetoric of the republicans over the past year to see how truly detrimental they are to our democracy and the principles on which this nation was founded. They just want power and are willing to start a revolution just to get it no matter the damage. They have been exposed finally for all to see...thanks to the internet and their true motivations...and you all know it.

And if (heaven forbid) the Republicans take control of the Congress in January 2011 the "ban on all earmarks" will have ended the previous November. How conveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenient.

Good ad, but it should be only the beginning.

How about some internet ads? Everytime I get on a political website I've been seeing these "Freedom Matters" ads sponsored by the RNC, as well as Freedomworks ads attacking the Dem healthcare plan. I never see any Dem or progressive net ads anymore. I would also like to see some ads attacking the Ryan plan.

As I recall, Mr. Lewis had a quite lucrative business "selling" earmmarks during the bush years.
