JOHN ENSIGN BETTER HAVE A GOOD LAWYER.... While the media generally seems inclined to give Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) a pass on his sex/ethics/corruption scandal, the controversy itself seems to be getting more serious. Yesterday, a federal grand jury started issuing subpoenas.

According to one subpoena obtained by a Las Vegas television station, recipients were ordered to testify March 31 in Washington, D.C., and to turn over documents relating to the Republican senator.

TV station KLAS reported Thursday that the subpoenas went to six unnamed Las Vegas businesses. The subpoena posted on the station's Web site blacks out the recipient's identity.

The local station reported that the subpoenas are part of a "wide-ranging and deadly-serious criminal probe."

The businesses themselves are unlikely to have done anything wrong here. It's more likely that the subpoenas are intended to determine exactly what Ensign did to help cover up his sex scandal.

If you're just joining us, Ensign's humiliation came to public attention in June, when we learned the conservative, "family-values" lawmaker carried on a lengthy extra-marital affair with one of his aides, who happened to be married to another one of his aides. Ensign's parents tried to pay off the mistress' family.

The scandal grew far worse in October, when we learned that the Republican senator pushed his political and corporate allies to give lobbying contracts to his mistress's husband. When Douglas and Cynthia Hampton left Ensign's employ -- because, you know, the senator was sleeping with Cynthia -- Ensign allegedly took steps to help them make up the lost income, leaning on corporate associates to hire Douglas as a lobbyist. Emails that surfaced last week bolstered the allegations.

Federal officials are apparently trying to determine whether the far-right senator contacted these Las Vegas businesses about helping Doug Hampton.

The investigation is apparently moving quickly -- the local report noted that the grand jury "wants all of the subpoenaed records by the end of this month."

Beee-atch, IOKIYAR!!

To quote CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, the Washington Post et al "Nothing to see here, move along, move along, nothing to see."

I have never seen any powerful person caught red handed up to his eyeballs treated so tenderly. I wonder why?

If this plays out, it'll be interesting to see if the Reich tries to argue that Ensign can use the technologies of the Internet to maintain his Senate seat---from Club Fed.

And if he's convicted of anything, the cooperative media will help the conservatives dust off "witch hunt" and "fishing expedition" and various other spinology terms to express contempt for the judicial process, while making it look like the Democrats are focusing on Republicans to the exclusivity of prosecuting guilty Democrats.

Some things are as predictable as the sunrise.

But Steve -- he's a REPUBLICAN! If there's no D after the corrupt asshole's name, the equally corrupt corporatist Villagers have no interest in or intention of investigating the slimy right-wing POS.

JPG, he may not actually have a D after his name, but I bet he does when this hits the TeeVee machine.

All bad elected officials are D's. All righteous dudes and dudettes are R's...no matter what the reality is.

I just know the so-called "liberal media" will pay more attention to a possibly criminal sex scandal involving a sitting Senator than the behavior, however shameful, of an ex-Presidential candidate.

Posted by: Gregory on March 18, 2010 at 1:06 PM | PERMALINK

perhaps his defense will be: "well, yes i did have an affair with an aide whow was married to my chief of staff, and yes my parents tried to pay them off, and yes i'd violate the rules by attempting to steer lobbying work to my ex-chief of staff, BUT I NEVER GOT A BLOW JOB LIKE THAT AWFUL BILL CLINTON!!!!"

Elliot Spitzer for prosecuting attorney.

The local station reported that the subpoenas are part of a "wide-ranging and deadly-serious criminal probe."

As opposed to the usual, light-hearted kind?

Here at CNN, we are planning to make this among our lead stories, tomorrow.

We are planning a full half hour devoted to this. We will spend 1 minute discussing, in depth, all of the charges that democrats have made against the senator. Naturally, we will let representatives of Senator Ensign have 12 minutes to present the truth about what has occured. Then, to provide fairness and balance, we will have a 17 minute discussion of all of the similar scandals that have plagued the democrat party.

After this half hour, we will devote another half hour to a panel discussion of all of the ramifications of this and democrat scandals. Our panel will be hosted by Anderson Cooper on behalf of all Americans who have never been tainted by a scandal. Our panel will include the respected independent voice of Candy Crowley and the liberal perspective of Erick Erickson.

Unfortunately, what would of been tomorrow is now today and tomorrow never gets here. Move on, nothing here!

"Ensign's parents tried to pay off the mistress' family."

Tried, there is no Tried, they Did or they Did Not.

Seems to me that it is safe to say they did, and somehow they think because the $96,000 was given in $12,000 gifts to the adulatress, her husband, and two of their three children by Ensign's Mom and Dad (what, is the third child chopped liver?) and thus is not TAXABLE, it must be LEGAL.

Makes one laugh.

Posted by: Lance on March 18, 2010 at 2:00 PM | PERMALINK

what, is the third child chopped liver?

No, just last in line. I'm sure there were more "gifts" to come, until it all became public.

Imagine for a moment...that your a child of this moron and you're handed a check. Who would step up to the plate to explain the reasoning as to why you are holding this sum of money? Here johnny, this is for you because your daddy ... [shiver]. The good news is you can use it to get help you'll now need.

What makes no sense to me is that essentially Ensign AND HIS PARENTS tried to cover up a non-crime with actual crime. How stupid are these people? I mean this is trailer trash level behavior from a family that isn't hurting in any way.

The other bizarre fact is that everyone involved knew what was going on. Ensign wasn't trying to hide the affair from his wife, his family or his lover's husband.

My guess is that there is a basic rule among certain of the rich class: spend other people's money, not your own. Basically Ensign wanted to finance his way out of this mess with other people's money, and his family agreed.

John Ensign, like so many of his Republican colleagues, seems to have absolutely no honor, no shame, and a fuck you attitude toward his "detractors" - all the character traits I would hope his parents tried to steer him away from.

Oh, I almost forgot, his parents seemingly have no honor, no shame and a fuck you attitude toward their son's "detractors," as they were involved in the hush money part of this scandalous travesty!

Put all of 'em in jail!-Kevo

President Sham-wow will tell Holder to 'just look forward' in the spirit of bipartisanship.

Sorry to hear this is moving so fast. If Ensign resigns his seat before January 2011, Gibbons can appoint another Republican. If Ensign resigns after the new Governor is sworn in, there's a chance Rory Reid will hold that seat, and would appoint a Democrat, which could reverse one of the losses we're likely to take in November.

Also, it would make Ensign (a former likely Presidential candidate) twist in the wind a little longer.

Slow down, DoJ!

When you're a Republican (or a Villager), "morality" is a squishy, nebulous, relative term.

It's also for suckers only.

"...tried to cover up a non-crime with an actual crime. How stupid are these people?" tomj @ 2:52 PM.

When all you are is a facade, you'll do anything to keep it!
And "Ignore that man behind the curtain!" wasn't working...

John Ensign let the power he had get to his head. It's crazy to think that someone with a lot of power, is willing to abuse it and put his whole reputation on the line.
