REPORTS: STUPAK SAYS 'YES' TO HEALTH CARE REFORM (OR MAYBE NOT).... There has not yet been confirmation from the lawmaker himself, but MSNBC is reporting that Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) will support the health care reform legislation today. If accurate, this would not only be a huge development, it might seal the deal and point to success. (See updates below)
Reuters is reporting the same thing, as is the Wall Street Journal.
Democratic leaders have reached a deal with antiabortion Democratic lawmakers aimed at winning votes from at least some of them, an aide said Sunday.
The aide said a bloc of antiabortion lawmakers was set to vote "yes" on the bill. It wasn't immediately clear how many lawmakers would be won over by the deal or whether it included Rep. Bart Stupak (D., Mich.), the leader of the antiabortion Democrats.
The abortion issue has been one of the final obstacles Democratic leaders have been seeking to remove to win a 216-vote majority in the House for their health-overhaul bill.
Part of the equation, of course, is how many votes Stupak can/will/would bring with him. The size of his voting bloc is the subject of some debate -- it's somewhere between five and eight votes, as of this morning -- but if he and his allies are all on board with final passage, 216 votes appear to be secure.
The next question -- after official confirmation from Stupak himself -- is what became necessary to earn Stupak's support. Reports suggest it was discussions with the White House over an executive order that won him over, but we do not yet know exactly what that executive order would say.
And in related news, Rep. Brian Baird (D) of Washington state, is reportedly also going to vote "yes," after having voted "no" in November. Baird is retiring at the end of this term, and has been considered a key pick-up opportunity.
Update: CNN is reportng that Stupak is sitll a "no," and the Democratic leadership has not yet said anything, either way.
Second Update: Stupak told CNN's Evan Glass, "There is no deal yet. It's a work in progress. Maybe we'll get there today."
Third Update: Brian Baird confirms that he's switching from "no" to "yes."

Regardless of how this works out, I'd like to see Stupak get his when the dust settles. He needs to feel the political equivalent of pain.

The second Stupak says yes, he becomes another anonymous House member. Ergo, he will never say yes.

MSNBC took their baner down.
Stupak wont give up his leverage until the last second - until then, he'll try to get stronger and stronger language from the WH.
And I can only hope he gambles wrong and we get 216 without him - and he gets left with nothing.

Best of both worlds: if enough "no's" turn to yes's so that we don't need Stupak, and he loses everything and gets nothing. Then the Dem leadership could tell him what they really think of him.
Well, a guy can dream, right? . . .

I swear after today, Bart "my 15 hours of fame and I'm not done yet" Stupak, will end up missing and no one will go looking for him. A seriously narcissistic paternalistic drama queen.

As I asked before (with possible but nondefinitive answers): it bothers me to the extent that this deal-making is not even supposed to be necessary, presuming that the Bill already would block abortion funding as I see claimed. (Never mind, that few care about those who don't want their dollars used for other things, like wars etc.) Maybe Stupak is a misinformed, exhibitionistic prick, as implied above - or maybe there's a deep game afoot we should know about?

One hopes that the vote can be done without Stupak's support so his 15 minutes of fame expires and he returns to the oblivion from which he came. A real pro-life individual would embrace universal health care. Countries with universal health care have lower abortion rates than those without. Compare abortion rates in France and Germany with that of the U.S. Because French and German women have access to reliable and affordable family planning services, good prenatal health care and insurance for the child, the abortion rates are lower even though abortions are covered by health plans. American zealots are anti-abortion, NOT pro-life.

Bart STupid should join the Republicans and then vote Yes. That is the only route of significance left to a used rectal douche. If I were a female from his district I'd be homicidal.

Bart Stupak knows what he is doing. He is trying to delay HCR so it will miss the deadline for reconciliation. The Dem leaders need to peel off as many of his devotees to vote yeas.

What I'm angling at, is other reasons Stupak may have for opposing HCR. What do we know from donations, previous history, etc. It needs to be exposed so he can't wrap in mantle of "morals" esp. if latter not even technically correct.

"He is trying to delay HCR so it will miss the deadline for reconciliation."
Can you elaborate?

Pete Hoekstra just tweeted Stupak is a confirmed yes from 4 sources.

I'm wondering what health plan Stupak has. I've just checked 4 national plans available (AETNA, BC/BS, SAMBA, and GEHA) through the FEHBP for the area he represents and they cover abortion expenses with this wording "Not covered" "Charges related to abortions except when the life of the mother would be endangered if the fetus were carried to term or when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest". Assuming Stupak has coverage through the FEHBP, is he not subsidizing abortions here, much as the NRC healthplan did and they were unaware?

The fool is a yes but is too much of a candyass to come out and say it. You won't get any Kucinichesque statements from him. He's hiding from progressives and anti-choice people -- he won't have a friend in the world when this is over.

Coming from a WOMAN and one that had 2 D&Cs - the same type of procedure done for abortions. Mine were for a stillborn & ectopic pregnancy that went really horrible. These are MEDICAL procedures that need to be covered - regardless of the reasons. I should not have to justify my reasons to old idiot MEN. This disturbs me tremendously that women should be able to choose their procedures and not some stuffy men. BTW I am Catholic and married 21 years and pay all my taxes and insurance premiums and should all the medically necessary procedures available to me paid from my policy. End of story and boot this guys ass out of Congress now - holding up this legislation on moral grounds is absurd.

There is a deadline for budget reconciliation. Reconciliation bill in the Senate must be done by 4/16.

I'm going to guess that idiot Stupak talked himself into a corner because he didn't really understand the legislation, or he was just trying to get more brownie points among his ignorant constituents back home. I suspect he wanted to look like a big man....and now that things have been explained in a way even he can understand, he may go ahead and vote yes.
That guy needs to be primaried in a major way.
