SUSPECTED TERRORISTS CHARGED AFTER MIDWEST RAIDS.... The details are still coming together, but based on early reports it appears that federal officials took eight members of a Michigan-based Christian militia group into custody over the weekend. According to reporting today by the NYT's Charlie Savage, these eight, and a ninth who is still at large, have been indicted on sedition and weapons charges.

Based on court filings, it is believed that the nine radicals intended to kill an unidentified law enforcement officer, and attack the funeral procession with explosives similar to those used against U.S. troops in Iraq. The goal, according to the indictment, was to create some kind of "uprising against the government."

Eight of the nine were taken into custody over the weekend in raids in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. The extremists were identified as members of a militia group called Hutaree, which considers the U.S. government its "enemy," and which reportedly was moving forward with its plans for the attack next month.

These accounts suggest that federal officials intervened at a key moment, and prevented a devastating tragedy from taking place. Responses to terrorist attacks are important, but so are successful efforts like these to prevent the terrorist attacks from happening in the first place.

Given the recent political debates, Tim F. raises a good point.

Rightwing antiterror doctrine clearly states that we must strip these "terrorists" (no such thing as alleged in the war on terror) naked and hang them in cold cages by the wrists with their arms tied behind their backs so that the tendons tear and the shoulder joint dislocates. We should waterboard them until they confess and give up their co-conspirators (the Inquisition found waterboarding almost 100% effective! ). Without question these people should be held without any trial or access to habeas corpus petitions until the "war" against violent fundamentalist groups is over. At the very least we should shunt these guys into military tribunals where the rules have been rigged to ensure a conviction.

Of course Jonah Goldberg and Glenn Reynolds and Crittenden and Erickson and any other credentialed rightblogger will agree with what I just said. They have to.

That sounds about right. In fact, I'm genuinely curious what the reaction will be to this from some conservatives.

It appears that the Obama administration identified a group of religious radicals who consider the United States their enemy, and who have been plotting a deadly terrorist attack on American soil. Based on what's publicly available, the accused are very dangerous.

Will the Cheneys demand that they not be tried in civilian courts? Will Rudy Giuliani insist that it's too dangerous to detain the suspects on American soil? With a ninth member of the radical group still at large, will various Fox News personalities call on the president to torture the other eight for information before he/she can do something dangerous?

This may sound snarky, but it's really not intended to be. It appears that the Obama administration has captured eight suspected terrorists, and prevented a deadly attack. Putting aside whether the right would give the administration credit for stopping terrorism before it happens, will we have to endure the same inane questions from the usual suspects, or do those rules not apply when the accused are white Christians?

your question pretty much answers itself.

Steve - I think you meant to say "not" intended to be snarky, yes?

Posted by: mimi on March 29, 2010 at 12:46 PM | PERMALINK

Lord knows I'm wrong often enough, but I believe this, in a nutshell, will be the neoconservative response:

Leave the Hutatree alooooo-ho-ho-hooooonnnnne!

Haven't they suffered enough under such tyranny?

Posted by: slappy magoo on March 29, 2010 at 12:47 PM | PERMALINK

Nope, think more like the moronic reaction to "Ruby Ridge" and Waco.

Posted by: JM on March 29, 2010 at 12:47 PM | PERMALINK

In the pool for number of "The Nine" who are on SSI, food stamps or some other form of government assistance, I'll take 4.

Posted by: hells littlest angel on March 29, 2010 at 12:49 PM | PERMALINK

Yeah, it's not even worth asking the question... they will say that a few radicals don't define their movement and what is the government doing interfering with every American's God given right to collect powerful weapons and lazily scheme about using them someday.

Oh, and it is criminal for the government to demand taxes.

And besides... they're white Christians and clearly they just felt betrayed by a government that already abandoned them.

And lest not forget any white christian from the midwest who board's an airplane will be considered a suspicious person who can be removed anytime the rest of the passengers, or one loud one, feels uncomfortable in their presence.

Let's Roll!

To most on the right these people will be heroes. To the lunatic fringe, the Obama administration is an even greater threat to America than terrorists.

That begs the question, then, which I'd like to have answered:

Which side is the right wing on, Al-Quada or the American Government?

Posted by: citizen_pain on March 29, 2010 at 12:50 PM | PERMALINK

Steve, where in the constitution does it say "all terrorists are created equal"?

Posted by: Teabags For Brains on March 29, 2010 at 12:50 PM | PERMALINK

Um... plans going ahead in April: was a reconnaisance trip. (to find the Cracker Barrel
restaurants on the route?)

So far, not much reaction from the usual sources on the right. I seriously think they know the trap and have no idea how to handle it. Seems they are all waiting for someone else to make the first attempt at deflection.

Posted by: tommybones on March 29, 2010 at 12:52 PM | PERMALINK

We have no proof that these are right-wing militiamen. Maybe they are Muslim terrorists masquerading as militiamen. They should be harshly interrogated and if they really are militiamen, they should be given every right that American citizens deserve under the constitution.

Well, give 'em time. From what I heard, the leadership is going to a strip club over lunch to figure out what to do next.

It's time to apply the term 'Terrorist' to a person, based on what act they perpetrated or attempted to perpetrate, not on which twisted ideology they followed. If your god tells you to blow up a medical facility or murder some cops you are no different than the person whose god tells them to fly an airliner into a skyscraper.

"In fact, I'm genuinely curious what the reaction will be to this from some conservatives." Please. The reaction will be that the Obama is going after this Christians group because they're a little different. The Obama Muslin Gestapo will put them into concentration camps for conservatives. It's the first step in the Commie/Nazi Muslin take over. "First they came for," etc. Send money to the Defense of Religious Freedom from Obama Commie/Nazis Fund, Inc.

Posted by: E L on March 29, 2010 at 1:05 PM | PERMALINK

Absolutely... get some official to ask this of Sen. McCain or Former Half-Term Governess Palin.

Posted by: sduffys on March 29, 2010 at 1:05 PM | PERMALINK

or do those rules not apply when the accused are white Christians?

That's it exactly. And I think we all know how the reaction is going to unfold: instead of (correctly) referring to these nutjobs as "terrorists" the media will call them "anti-government protesters," then Beck or Hannity will go off on how "we need to wait until all the facts are in," while rightwing blogs will start wailing about how Obama's Night of the Long Knives has "finally begun," etc., etc.

First sentence of last graph needs a "not" I think, Steve, doesn't it?

Posted by: ulrich on March 29, 2010 at 1:07 PM | PERMALINK

Obviously we need to ignore political correctness, and begin profiling white Christians at the airports.

Posted by: Chris on March 29, 2010 at 1:07 PM | PERMALINK

From the indictment, it looks like the charges include conspiring to "levy war against the United States" and to "deploy weapons of mass destruction."

I'd say these guys were toast, but how can you get toast by going straight from enriched white bread to ashes scattered into the breeze? There is no toast....

However, notice how fast the Michigan Militia backpedaled on this saying "We aren't associated with and we've done nothing illegal!" Despite training Hutaree members:

It wasn't clear what prompted the raids, but Michael Lackomar, a spokesman for the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia, said one of his team leaders got a frantic phone call Saturday evening from members of Hutaree, a Christian militia group. They said their property in southeast Michigan was being raided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to Lackomar.

"They said they were under attack by the ATF and wanted a place to hide," Lackomar said. "My team leader said, 'no thanks.'"

The team leader was cooperating with the FBI, Lackomar said. He said SMVM wasn't affiliated with Hutaree, but a handful of Hutaree members twice attended monthly training sessions with his group that focus on survival training and shooting practice. [bold mine]

Militias are not innocent guys who play in the woods on weekends. Though it will be interesting to see if this group gets some stick from other militia groups for cooperating.

What we really need to protect us from such threats: another aircraft carrier, or perhaps a missile-defense system.

Posted by: m.carey on March 29, 2010 at 1:13 PM | PERMALINK

Over at Red State, there's a big story on the threat against Cantor... and NOTHING about the Michigan arrests. Maybe they will simply ignore it completely? I can't imagine that could last long. These clowns love to hear themselves yap. It'll be like Nicholson's character in A Few Good Men, confessing on the stand because he WANTS to tell the truth... which we simply couldn't handle.

Some of their educational and inspirational materials are on YouTube for now, search 'hutaree'. Their gear is serious stuff, near as I can tell. The message is kinda '90s all over again.

Wait, you expect intellectual or moral consistency from right-wing pundits?? Haven't you been paying attention?

Posted by: biggerbox on March 29, 2010 at 1:24 PM | PERMALINK

These people are well within their rights to plot aggainst the government since it's obvious that the government brought this on itself by the arrogant way it acts and rams laws through by majority rule and stuff.

Posted by: howie on March 29, 2010 at 1:28 PM | PERMALINK

From what I've seen so far the conservative response is irresponsible and childish. Surprise!

They bring up Bill Ayers a lot. Basically the "rubber and glue" tactic:

I'm rubber and you're glue,
Whatever you say,
Bounces off me
And sticks to you!"

Any Real American Patriot will affirm for you that:

White + Christian = Patriot
(as long as they are really Christians and not Methodists or Catholics)

Terrorist = Non-White or Non-Christian

Any Real American Patriot will affirm for you that:

April 19th should be declared to be 'National Patriots Day'.

Any Real American Patriot will affirm for you that Ronald Reagan was correct that the United States federal government is the source of all problems since the 1930's when it was taken over by the communist Roosevelt.

Makes me wanna sing The Clash's cover version of that great song, "I Fought the Law, and, the Law Won."
Oh, and all of you righties who kept telling me how evil The Black Panthers were, who also targeted police, see any resemblences? Or, how horrible them Muzum terist's are, the ones who use IED's on our troops, any similarities?
Or, are any similarities only 'skin" deep?
I bet I know the answer to that one!

These terrorists probably set a ticking time bomb--they should be waterboarded until they say where it is!

Posted by: Allan Snyder on March 29, 2010 at 1:51 PM | PERMALINK

If you go to Raw Story, you will find that the right wing is already mounting a response in the comments to the article. Her basic stance is that nothing has been shown and who believes the government and its subservient corporate media anyhow? This is being compared to the attack on Waco and on Ruby Ridge where peaceful people were killed while minding their own business and not threatening anyone.

Posted by: Texas Aggie on March 29, 2010 at 1:53 PM | PERMALINK

That sounds about right. In fact, I'm genuinely curious what the reaction will be to this from some conservatives.

A) Blame liberals for trampling the rights of these patriotic True Americans.

B) Claim they *are* liberals.

C) Ignore it, just the last ten white Christian terrorist attacks.

Posted by: Master Mahan on March 29, 2010 at 1:54 PM | PERMALINK

No the right will be put in a corner here.

As long as the Militia movement kept its focus on resisting FEDERAL authority, and particularly that of the ATF and the Blue Helmets of the UN the Reichnuts could find a way to defend them. After all the Second and Tenth Amendments do exist. But on early reporting this group was going to target local cops by assassinating one that then launching an IED attack on the funeral possession.

I don't care how Bachmannized you are, there is no way to mount a defense of cop-killing in general, not from the Right anyway. There is no way to whitewash this. (Pun intended).

We don't have to speculate. Here's Pam Geller's response (courtesy of MMfA)

-----
Despite Record Levels of Islamic Terror in U.S., FBI raids Christian Groups
In a word, nuts. Seven people have been arrested for allegedly selling pipe bombs in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, Fox News has learned.

How about raiding Homegrown Jihad: The Terrorist Camps Around the U.S.?

Was the armed camp in New York, Islamberg, raided? The Muslim Brotherhood (CAIR) is already crowing about it.
------------

Which gives a pretty high level for the next competitor in the Conservative 'running high (crazy conclusion) jump' at the Crazy Olympics. I haven't checked in on Janice Folger Porter yet, but will later.

It's Eric Cantor's fault for claiming that he was threatened with violence, thus making it a legitimate subject for concern.

As long as only the Democrats were being threatened, it didn't matter to the right wing media.

Posted by: Lance on March 29, 2010 at 3:44 PM | PERMALINK

Seems like just yesterday, (April) that the right was criticizing Napolitano and Homeland Security for a report warning of home-grown right wing terrorist groups. I doubt anyone will revisit that episode and apologize in light of these arrests.

Let's see what Palin, McCain, Guiliani, Romney, Steele, and Fox Faux News have to say. Oh. That means someone would have to ask them. Sorry, that obviously won't happen.

I'm sure we can expect some commentary from Bimbo and Beck. Maybe even Morning Joe. And where are the teabaggers when you need them?

Posted by: rrk1 on March 29, 2010 at 3:53 PM | PERMALINK

I guess Palin's Teabagger Express won't be making that unannounced Hutaree stop before rolling in to Cleveland next month....

There is no use expecting a rational response from the right wing. They don't do logic. And snarky sounds about right!

Posted by: AlphaLiberal on March 29, 2010 at 1:28 PM

I gotta admit, I didn't see that one coming -- but I should have.
It's totally predictable; as many have pointed out (I think David Neiwert was first and best at it), if you want to know what the Pubbies are up to, look at what they're accusing Democrats and liberals of.
They said Obama "pals around with terrorists," ergo...
And, of course, it's the logical extension of what they said about Andrew Joseph Stack when he crashed his plane into the Federal office building in Austin TX a month and a half ago: a misguided, but completely understandable, response to the extreme provocations of out-of-control Democommiefascists who are taking our country away from us.
They'll always have an answer; you just gotta give 'em time to think it up.
