NOT EXACTLY A BRIGHT 'DAY'.... Long-time observers may remember the name Bud Day. Six years ago, Day, a decorated Air Force combat veteran, hooked up with the Swiftboat liars to smear John Kerry. Four years later, Day explained his support for John McCain and the war in Iraq by saying, "The Muslims have said either we kneel or they're going to kill us."

This week, Day has begun trying to rally support for Gov. Charlie Crist's (R) Senate campaign in Florida, instead of Marco Rubio (R), who's leading in the polls. Apparently, Day sees the Republican primary through a racial lens. (via Memeorandum)

"You know, we just got through (electing) a politician who can run his mouth at Mach 1, a black one, and now we have a Hispanic who can run his mouth at Mach 1," Day said. "You look at their track records and they're both pretty gritty. Charlie has not got a gritty track record."

Day confirmed he was speaking of Obama and Rubio.

"You've got the black one with the reading thing. He can go as fast as the speed of light and has no idea what he's saying," Day said. "I put Rubio in that same category, except I don't know if he's using one of those readers."

By "readers," Day appears to be referring to teleprompters.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that the Crist campaign doesn't promote Day's endorsement too heavily. Any praise that includes references to the president as "the black one" probably isn't the kind of support a politician will want to advertise.

Or is it? In a press release, Crist said he "could not be more grateful" for Day's support, though the statement did not refer specifically to Day's apparent racial perspective on the primary contest.

I can only hope Crist will distance himself from Day's comments, and not try to win Republican support by characterizing Rubio as "a Hispanic" that belongs "in that same category" as "the black one."

It is truly amazing sometimes when a person betrays his inner-sanctum with the words he chooses to employ when expressing his viewpoint, but which are lost on him when rendered back to his attention!

Racist wingnut? Dog bites man...

The only thing I can take from this is that there is a large swath of teabaggers who are too stupid to get the coded racist messages.

Posted by: JoeW on March 30, 2010 at 1:17 PM | PERMALINK

The American Military doesn't care if you're a racist, as long as you keep it to yourself and follow orders.

Bud Day is no longer in the military. As a soldier, he may have been a hero. As a civilian, he's a disgrace to his nation.

Remind me what percentage of the vote in Florida is Hispanic? No, I don't think Crist is going to try to run on an anti-Hispanic platform.

"Could not be more grateful" is a phrase that can be taken literally, you know. :)

Posted by: Jordan on March 30, 2010 at 1:19 PM | PERMALINK

Did this twat seriously call it a "reading thing"?

Posted by: Gonads on March 30, 2010 at 1:20 PM | PERMALINK

You only have to disavow a racist supporter if you're a person of color.

It's a kind of white jujitsu thing, where the only bad racists are "reverse" racists like Rev. Wright.

White racists "just want their country back."

and he still refers to a microphone as "the machine", right?

Somewhere there's a damned big rock under which all these loathsome creatures hide in odd-numbered years, and from whence they slither out in election years.

The teabagger heads on Larry King said they would repeal social security, I wonder if they have told those grey haired supporters.
Off subject - but has anyone read the article on DU about the Willow Palin scandal that Sarah is keeping quiet about?

Posted by: JS on March 30, 2010 at 1:25 PM | PERMALINK

This probably says more about Crist's desperation - and the finality of the loss he is facing - than anything substantive about the Fla GOP or Rubio's eventual success.

Posted by: weboy on March 30, 2010 at 1:26 PM | PERMALINK

Crist needs to attract the extreme right wing of a red state and a supporter calling Obama 'the black one' won't help? In what universe? This is exactly what he needs to do.

Posted by: BillFromPA on March 30, 2010 at 1:28 PM | PERMALINK

Crist can't loudly disavow this - he will need the wingnuts if ever he gets past Rubio.

It's a microcosm of the GOP's national dilemma; they have to have their base supporting them enthusiastically, but that base gives off an odor that drives away sane voters.

Good luck with the campaign, Governor.

Jesus, WHAT IS THE DEAL with the whole "teleprompter" thing? Do the conservatives honestly think that accusing a former constitutional law professor from Harvard of being stupid for using a teleprompter is going to somehow raise questions about his intelligence? How juvenile can you get?

Posted by: Patrick Starr on March 30, 2010 at 1:49 PM | PERMALINK

I'm gonna have to get Mr. Day on one of those talking and listening things, and give him a what for!

Posted by: John D'oh on March 30, 2010 at 1:57 PM | PERMALINK

I may be a little slow on the uptake, but does "gritty" mean "secretly gay"?

Posted by: skeptic on March 30, 2010 at 2:05 PM | PERMALINK

jimBob, I can only shake my head in disbelief as the same people who worship Reagan on bended knee jeer at the current President for using a device that Reagan used constantly, as has every President since and most other politicians as well. And why not? Before teleprompters, people read prepared remarks from typescripts. The days of Cicero, when an orator was expected to know an hour-long speech from memory, are long gone, and the consequences of misspeaking these days are too serious for any politician to wing it, although Obama does frequently depart from his script, as Steve Benen has documented.

As for Day's reference to Obama as "the black one," he's finally managed to outdo John McCain's "That one!" That's some sort of achievement, I suppose.

Posted by: T-Rex on March 30, 2010 at 2:12 PM | PERMALINK

Patrick: Yeah, and Sarah Moosebilly is STILL using the teleprompter slur. After Obama went on articulately all day without so much as a note written on his hand at the health care summit, as he has done before. It's not like it's a point of philosophical difference or something. It's a point of obvious on video fact. Besides the easily verifiable historical fact that all presidents since Saint Ronnie and before in the TV age have used teleprompters all the time when giving speeches so they can look at the cameras and don't have to look down at notes.

Right wing no-nothing idealogues believe what they want to believe if it fits their preconceptions. Reality is not an issue. Sounds like an empty broad brush accusation, I know. But it's true in a thousand ways. Obama is a black guy with an Arab style middle name, so he was born in Kenya and isn't smart enough to do more than read stuff some socialist white guys who hate America probably wrote for him.

I have no idea how this anti-reality problem of a major proportion of our fellow citizens can be addressed, but Fox News and Rush etc. aren't helping. In the very long run, all the effort at improving education (critical thinking anyone?) might help. Wait, I know: Re-education Camps. Or perhaps more appropriately, Education Camps.

Bud Day isn't just a decorated combat veteran. He's the most highly decorated American serviceman since Douglas MacArthur, and has received not only four Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, and the Air Force Cross, but also the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Which is kind of a big fuckin' deal.

And every time he opens his mouth, he makes me sad. What's that story in the Bible, about the son who covers his father's nakedness because he has so much respect for the man and hates to see him embarrass himself? That's how I feel about Bud Day.

"You've got the black one with the reading thing. He can go as fast as the speed of light and has no idea what he's saying," Day said

Has Day been promoted to Grand Dragon yet?

Posted by: electrolite on March 30, 2010 at 2:41 PM | PERMALINK

Day just turned 85. He may well suffer from dementia.

This whole State is going in the shitter. It looks like the wingnuts are going to win this fall . Charlie is Toast and the Governors seat going to that doofus Bill Mccullom (the AG suing the feds over HRC) Except for some pockets down around Miami this whole state is an abyss of Right Wing mugwumps.

I agree with elmo. Bud Day was an extraordinary military man who suffered greatly during his captivity in Vietnam. But that doesn't give him a pass on such racist statements. Salute the uniform, not the man.

If I were a Republican, I would be cringing in embarrassment at things like this.

There are valid policy arguments to be made by sane individuals on both sides of the aisle, but as long as idiots like this are unchallenged by the right, I'm a lot less inclined to listen even to the sane ones. It's kind of a shame.

Posted by: Kreniigh on March 30, 2010 at 6:03 PM | PERMALINK

Sweet Jesus, Dems, when will you get it into your head that there is nothing more terrifying than a man who emits sounds at the speed of sound?

The only thing worse than a "President" who who pays attention to so-called international law is one who pays attention to so-called physical laws!

"You've got the black one with the reading thing. He can go as fast as the speed of light and has no idea what he's saying,"

I suspect there's a bit of projection going on here...
