WEDNESDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Another attack in Russia: "Two suicide bombers -- including one impersonating a police officer -- killed 12 people Wednesday in southern Russia. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the blasts may have been organized by the same militants who attacked the Moscow subway."

* Doku K. Umarov, a Chechen rebel leader, claimed responsibility for Monday's double bombing in Moscow, and warned that more attacks were likely.

* Big federal court ruling: "A federal judge ruled Wednesday that government investigators illegally wiretapped the phone conversations of an Islamic charity and two American lawyers without a search warrant."

* I didn't realize this was an option: "The Army secretary said on Wednesday he would not discharge gay personnel who admitted their sexual orientation to him, despite the 'don't ask, don't tell' stance that remains official military policy."

* What a surprise: "The first of several British investigations into the e-mails leaked from one of the world's leading climate research centers has largely vindicated the scientists involved."

* Fascinating piece from Andrew Sabl on the rhetoric of the health care debate, specifically the efficacy of the word "mandate." I wish I'd thought to write this one.

* Former Florida GOP chairman Jim Greer facing a criminal investigation?

* Dear state of Utah, you can't take federal land just because you want to.

* When your right-wing uncle sends you an email saying the IRS will hire 16,000 new agents to enforce the health care law, remember that the claim isn't true.

* Great segment last night from Rachel Maddow on the infamous C Street house and some unresolved tax-law questions that need answers. (thanks to M.R. for the reminder)

* Shelby Steele appears to have published oneof the worst op-eds of all time.

* Trinity College will probably resist efforts to remove "Our Lord" from its diplomas.

* I found this story about the 10 personal letters President Obama reads every day pretty compelling.

* Yep: "Obama could propose cutting taxes to zero, deporting everyone who can't speak English, renaming the country 'Jesusland' -- doesn't matter. The GOP answer will always be the same."

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

"The Army secretary said on Wednesday he would not discharge gay personnel who admitted their sexual orientation to him, despite the 'don't ask, don't tell' stance that remains official military policy."

I think this is temporary due to the fact that the military is currently surveying active duty personel regarding DADT. I guess they want to assure the gays will not have any problems should one say accidentally reveal themselves.

Steve! It's Trinity University they are talking about. There are a few Trinity Colleges -- including my alma mater in Hartford, CT -- but none have the same, let's say, personality, as Trinity University.

If some muckrackers or muckraker has the tenacity to open and expose C Street and the Family it would be the story of the decade!

The 10 letters story is worth the read.

Lipstick, meet Pig. That sounds very nice. I wonder why they have those penalty enforcement provisions?

EVERYONE, attention: the offshore drilling thing is optics. Really, what else can it be? Drilling is very popular with key demogs. How far it goes re: implementation is yet to be determined.

So, squawk away.

Jam Guy, you got right. There are huge leases in the gulf that are bought and paid for-decades ago- and have yet to be "drilled".

Same situation on dry land; unexplored leases, explored leases, capped wells, etc. And they are all waiting until oil goes (back) to $200 a bbl.

yes, the "10 letters" piece is well worth reading...

I thought I already lived in Jesusland.. I made out my tax check to Jesus!

Posted by: Trollop on March 31, 2010 at 7:19 PM | PERMALINK

I'm going to take a wait and see attitude regarding President Obama's plan to open offshore oil exploration. This young progressive idealist (me) learned something about pragmatism after the HCR bill passed.

Obama said he wasn't going to do OSD, and the safety issues aren't settled. Should we really be proud of such neoliberal triangulation?

Even Drudge and Faux (his link) are opening up about the extremism and vulgarity of todays anti-government militants ("patriots" by their own euphemism.) At
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/03/30/irs-investigates-death-threats-employees-health-approval,
we read of death threats and discussions of how to bait and kill IRS agents. One particularly vulgar and atrocious exchange on blogs:
In a particularly heinous reply that was praised by dozens of other commenters, someone suggested - in graphic terms - that tax opponents should rape an attractive agent before killing her. "Or vice versa…don’t have a problem with that either."
Yeah, vice versa. This is presumably a good "patriotic" and "Christian" crowd.

You know, the upper level operatives like Ailes, the RNC strategy group, Beck/Limbaugh/Palin and that media complex pushed hatred of Obama, progressives, the government and so on. They are effectively and morally responsible for fanning these flames, and need to be held open to the bright lights and to scorn for instigating terror tactics in their partisan war. They should have to ride their tiger right out into the swamp.

"* I didn't realize this was an option: "The Army secretary said on Wednesday he would not discharge gay personnel who admitted their sexual orientation to him, despite the 'don't ask, don't tell' stance that remains official military policy.""

Of course its an option. Unless someone sues the military to force them to obey the law it is entire;y within the power of the military (and the CinC) to effectively end DADT any time. That's what's made Obama's refusal to deal with issue while handing it off to an uncaring congress such a transparent betrayal of gays. He could have handled DADT and Gitmo within second of becoming president by simply signing a couple orders to the military.

He chose not to.

Koreyel, @ 21:07,

Thanks! Found the whole shebang -- 67 photos, each better than the next -- and reposted to my Facebook "status". Have editors and teachers among my friends; they ought to enjoy it.

I've got news for the Governor of Utah: You may be a "sovereign" state, but there is another sovereign above you, and that's the federal government.

It outranks you.

Sure like you spending millions to find that out, and at the expense of your school children, too.

Classy.

Posted by: Cal Gal on March 31, 2010 at 10:57 PM | PERMALINK

My "favorite" part of DADT is that they apparently NEVER discharged anyone for asking.

Every time someone was "outed" anonymously, or by someone outside the military dropping a dime, that resulted in someone IN the military ASKING.

I sure would like to see at least ONE discharge for someone asking.

Up to a certain point, new IRS agents would pay for themselves.

Regarding C Street being owned by a group called "The Family", reminds me of the Sopranos and talk of "The Family". fagedaboudit. I don't think so! I truly hope this pans out.

If Trinity was a private school, I could see his point. But it's a private school - a private RELIGIOUS school - and he chose to go there.
