THE 'BIKINI GRAPH'.... It's heartening to know my first-Friday-of-every-month jobs chart has been noticed. At Rachel Maddow's office, it's apparently been dubbed the "bikini chart." Pay particular attention to what Rachel had to say around the 3:25 mark:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

With any luck, the economy will continue to improve, and the chart will look less and less like a bikini bottom as the year progresses.

As the Republicans continue to whine about how Obama hasn't created enough new jobs, it's important for Democrats to hammer the Republicans for refusing to do anything.

The Republican position is, "We would love to help out the (deserving) unemployed, but the country just can't afford it as long as millionaires still are paying too much in taxes."

Looks more like a Speedo to me, but then, I'm gay, so whatever floats your boat... :)

Next: the Wedgie Graph!

Excellent, but I would add "and continue to insist that large corporations receive tax free subsidies created through medicare Part D legislation to keep their retirees off this program and hide the true cost of this socialism we promoted". From what I have been reading, this has now be corrected by the ACA.

Any family values war veteran can tell you that this socially engineered , puerile , attempt to steer , or manipulate our goodly god fearing , red blooded , lingerie aware populations is a cynical , political operation . This is the last throes of a , campaign addicted , policy starved administration .
These arrogant , infanticidal , publicity shot addicts , who telepromt their clumsy bikini pacifiers while the only jobs being created are for birth certificate-less , illegal terrorists .
Sheesh any one can see this , as everyone is saying , "Just another affront to real Americans ."

Interesting, FRP. The Spiro Agnew approach to (I hope) parody trolling.

I was watching Maddow last night while ironing, 'cause that's my rock-and-roll Friday-night lifestyle the past couple of months, and I kept wondering if she was going to give you proper credit. She sure did! Congratulations! Really, this graph is so much more effective than most. There it all is in stark, significant contrast.

OT, I love that she wears sedate blazers on top and ripped jeans below the table.

Posted by: shortstop on April 3, 2010 at 8:54 AM | PERMALINK

Ah, yes. That's why they (you) are called "talking heads". Those jeans, Rachel! Undoubtedly, the "relaxed fit" model.

Congratulations! I look forward to the MSM picking up on TWIG.

I understand Dr Cassel in Florida hangs it upside down and refers to it as "The Jockstrap" graph of the success Shrub made of everything.

Posted by: berttheclock on April 3, 2010 at 9:35 AM | PERMALINK

Unfortunately, for Dr Cassel, the lab results just came in and proved it was just a severe case of epididymitis.

Steve, I trust that you know that Speaker Pelosi has published a slicker version of what is essentially YOUR graph!

Didn't Pelosi publish the graph first, before Steve? JUst curious...

While I really like the graph, and it certainly looks encouraging, if instead we graphed cumulative jobs lost, or "remaining jobs" it would look a bit more depressing; we'd still be a long ways from the jobs we started with.

Don't get me wrong, clearly this is moving in the right direction, but until now it's only been "slowing the rate of job loss" and graphing it this way makes things look a little more encouraging than they really are. :(

OT: Isn't the term "wreak havoc," not "wreck havoc"? It sounded like the President said "wreck havoc." How can you wreck havoc? It's already a mess.

Hey, notice the red-state v. blue state progression there too? It fits and it figures.

FRP is an acolyte and disciple of the great and revered John Thullen, he just hasn't quite got it down yet.

I am too, but I know I don't have the chops, so I mostly don't try.

A bikini is more comfortable than a thong but neither covers your ass sufficiently. I'm looking forward to knickerbockers.

Mustang Bob, I am confused. What is this?

Ach, sorry, I thought the blog software would make it a link....Plus you're Mustang Bobby. Let me go hang my head in shame while ogling some more swimwear...

That's cute but it's a Powerpoint-grade chart and it's so easy to take the same data and spin it half a dozen different ways that it's more cautionary than reassuring.

I am very glad to see Edward Tufte is going to be working with the Obama folks to make clearer explanations of what the stimulus is and isn't doing.

Nice article on the several dimensions in which the US economy is improving here

I think the data looks better plotted in this manner: http://www.pollster.com/blogs/JobsPlots-21.php. You've plotted the first derivative of the data for some silly reason. Makes no sense. Even if all Americans gradually lost their jobs, the shape of the distribution would be the same. The data as published would suggest that the job loss problem was "fixed" before Obama even took office.
