WRITING ON THE WALL GETTING BIGGER FOR ENSIGN.... About a month ago, Politico ran on a piece on Republican Sen. John Ensign's (Nev.) sex-ethics-corruption scandal, noting that "the persistent drip of information ... has some colleagues and top Republican aides asking quietly whether he can serve effectively."
The piece included plenty of quotes from GOP insiders on the Hill, but nearly all were from unnamed aides. Republican lawmakers conceded they found it difficult to work with the scandal-plagued Ensign, but would only acknowledge his problems "privately."
It spells trouble for Ensign when GOP members start rebuking him on the record.
Rep. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) said he was concerned about Ensign's capacity to serve since revelations have emerged about the senator's role in allegedly trying to secure a contract for a company while it was considering hiring a top former aide, with whose wife Ensign had cheated.
"The fact that we have a wounded junior senator, yeah, I think that is a cause for concern," Heller said Wednesday.... Heller would not call for Ensign's resignation, but expressed serious concern that the senator's scandal could have a downballot effect on Republican candidates in Nevada, where the GOP is hoping to defeat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for reelection this fall.
"Will it have impact up and down the ticket for Republicans this fall?" Heller said. "I think there is a potential of that happening."
Heller's remarks were followed by an op-ed today from two former Clark County GOP officials who urged "all true conservative Republican leaders and activists to speak out now for the resignation of Senator Ensign."
I've largely given up trying to figure out why major news outlets aren't taking this seriously. We're talking about a controversy featuring a sitting senator's adulterous affair, plus alleged ethics violations, hush money, and official corruption. An ongoing FBI investigation appears to be heating up, and by some accounts, expanding, and yet, no media frenzy.
And while that no doubt comes as a relief to Ensign, the media's disinterest will only help so much if a growing number of Republicans start publicly calling him out.

No mystery. IOKIYAR.

Oh, come on, that can be explained in just seven letters: IOKIYAR. If the Ensign news blackout isn't a classic example of that, I can't imagine what would be.

The Atlantic Monthly recently had space for a piece on how John Edwards might find public redemption.
But John Ensign, whose affair is just the beginning of his problems, continues to fly beneath the media's radar.
Our liberal media. Yeppers.

What part of "It's all about Clinton getting blowjobs" did you not get?
There's a possibility that because it's MERELY a sitting Senator instead of a sitting President that the media decided this wasn't worthy of coverage.

Its especially OK if your are a moralizing, family values, republican living in a rent subsidized "church" where you discuss your affair with Deacon Colburn despite being a millionaire.

You mean the national media dominated by Rupert Murdoch and other right-wing moguls and the news readers who fear them?

Everybody so far plus one. IOKIYAR. Simplest explanation that fits the facts.

Oh, Steve, you know the answer to that one: he's a Republican. If Ensign were a Democrat there would be such a media firestorm it would make the Clinton/Lewinsky imbroglio seem like a quiet walk in the park.

If Fox doesn't cover it, it obviously isn't news.

I'd like to believe that the FBI asked the major news services to stand down until an indictment is handed down. Since this isn't catnip for Fox or Drudge, no one would be shooting first to get the scoop. On the other hand, I'm probably deluding myself on this.

Easy.
1. He's a Republican.
2. He's not a Democrat.
3. He's not a black man with a white wife having sex with white women.

"...has some colleagues and top Republican aides asking quietly whether he can serve effectively."
Since he's a Republican Senator, effectiveness is counted by the ability to stand up and object when the President of the Senate calls for unanimous consent.
That's as effective as any Republican is right now.

If that boy's name were Clinton, David Broder and Sally Quinn would be outraged -- outraged I tell ya!

Hey, it's not like Ensign is a professional golfer or anything! He's just an incredibly corrupt sitting United States Senator, who cares about his criminality?
Now watch this drive!

It could be that this scandal is too complicated for the dumbed-down MSM and their audience to handle. There are too many players and too many plot twists.
The MSM mostly skipped the S&L scandal some years back because it also was very complex and thinking about it made their heads hurt.
They want easy stuff like extra-marital, interracial fornication, where the issues are all black and white.

Maybe it's because he hasn't stood before the American people, wagging his finger in indignation claiming he never had sex with that woman?
After all it's just about sex.

There's one reason no one's taking an interest in this. The Family. Big money, big power and big influence are at risk if you piss them off.

I guess Rachel Maddow doesn't count for MSM. Too bad because she's tracked this thing from the very beginning.

Probably because the ethics charges against him are phony. I am not defending adultery, but can you say "Ted Stevens?" These charges are being trumped up by the left in order to get rid of the 41st Republican. They don't care whether he is acquitted later. They want him out of office now. And Republicans are fools to believe that there is any merit in these charges until they are proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law--if it even comes to that, which it probably won't, because as I said, the accusations are phony. The left always uses the right's honor against it. Conservatives should stop being so gullible.
