BEWARE OF LOCUSTS.... Looking for something else this morning, I stumbled upon this item TNR's Michael Crowley published in April 2009.

Two wars, economic collapse, and now a possible global pandemic. When do the locusts arrive?

During the '08 campaign the GOP ran an advertisement mockingly comparing Obama to Moses. But if he can get us through all this....

Oh, for the halcyon days of "only" having to deal with wars, economic crises and a global flu pandemic. Crowley wrote this 13 months ago, when the challenges facing America's leadership seemed overwhelming.

Since then -- in addition to the two wars, economic crises, and global flu pandemic -- it's been hard to keep up the pressing and immediate challenges on the Obama administration's to-do list. We've seen natural disasters (Haiti's earthquake, Nashville's flooding, Oklahoma's tornadoes), man-made disasters (the BP oil spill), default crises (Dubai, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal), foreign policy crises (North Korea, Israel), and attempted terrorist attacks (Abdulmutallab on Christmas, Shahzad in Times Square).

I can only assume that it's fairly common for President Obama to wake up, receive his morning briefings, and say, "You've got to be kidding me."

For what it's worth, I may not agree with every decision or policy position, but when it comes to confidence during tumultuous times, I'm pretty relieved to know Barack Obama is in the Oval Office. And while the media has decided it's unacceptable, the president's cool, poised demeanor seems unusually well suited to the times.

Steve Benen wrote: "We've seen natural disasters (Haiti's earthquake, Nashville's flooding, Oklahoma's tornadoes) ..."

The flooding of Nashville -- which was comparable to the flooding of New Orleans by Katrina but has been virtually ignored by the national corporate media -- was an extreme precipitation event of exactly the sort that is expected to increase in frequency and severity as a result of anthropogenic global warming and climate change. The frequency of such events is rapidly increasing worldwide, just as predicted by global warming models.

Rather than calling such events "natural disasters", I recommend that you identify them accurately as "extreme weather events linked to global warming".

There is some science that supports the idea that global warming may increase the frequency, range and severity of tornadoes, but it is not as definitive as the link between global warming and extreme precipitation events.

Uh, Steve, pardon me if this question has been asked and answered before, but is there any particular reason this blog apparently has nothing at all to say about one of the top news stories of the day?

You know the one I mean, right?

My husband and I were joking yesterday that Michelle must periodically turn to her husband and say "Why in the hell did you want this job?!" Like you, I'm really glad we have someone smart, and who's heart is in the right place, in the Oval Office these days. Can you imagine if Bush/Cheney were still there????

The very notion of Sarah in charge should make even the most zealous TeaBagger cringe in fear. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

You can add to that list that the "loyal" opposition is not only disloyal but has become irrevocably unglued.

Next he'll learn that we are about to be hit by an asteroid. The Christian right will undoubtedly blame him for the impending doom on the premise that he pissed of God.

Oh, wait, the right doesn't need an asteroid to blame President Obama for every bad thing since the civil war.

You forgot to mention a growing and contentious partisan political environment that is stifling the ability for the president to breath without drawing criticism (let alone get any appointments to key positions filled) and the rise of reactionary/ultra conservative tea party movement promoted by mega media corporations that seem to stir the social pot for nothing more than creating dissent and opposition to the very idea of "government" so they have something to report. Domeatic affairs in this country are in shambles.

I know that 'technically' you are the MEDIA but I want to say that it is the MEDIA'S fault on the majority of this garbage. Obama is not perfect and I have not agreed on several of his decisions but I'm THANKFUL that McCain is not the President. Every single thing that Obama has done is 'too slow' 'not working hard enough' 'the AMERICAN PEOPLE don't agree' 'no bipartisanship' 'he PROMISED', etc. etc. The newest talking point is 'he's just like Jimmy Carter. The AMERICAN PEOPLE want a leader'...this was pushed this morning by Joe Scarborough and Chris Matthews. They will keep repeating it and repeating it, FOX will pick it up and repeat it ad nauseum...finally it will MAYBE be reflected in the polls and the media will pat itself on the back and say 'SEE? The AMERICAN PEOPLE think...' It's bogus, it's shoddy and you know what? I like MY PRESIDENT just fine.

"is there any particular reason this blog apparently has nothing at all to say about one of the top news stories of the day?"

This site has mentioned it, but yeah, the story is getting pretty prominant play elsewhere in the world, and some US media, and less discussion here than one might expect, IMO.

Posted by: flubber on June 2, 2010 at 3:43 PM | PERMALINK

yeah, i've been thinking for weeks now that if Pres Obama's hair was any longer, he'd've pulled it all out by now. I mean, seriously? What else can..(no i don't even want to finish that question).

I would think President Obama would look at his daily briefing and say:

"@#$%^&***@??!!!"

Posted by: Anniecat45 on June 2, 2010 at 4:23 PM | PERMALINK

I am thankful every day that Obama is our president, sometimes I wonder how he can keep his sanity with all of the problems handed to him. Bush/Cheney & Co just about destroyed the country, he is trying to mend it and take it into the 21st century. It is so sad that the people that destroyed it have been trying to destroy him every day. I never realized before how I hate republicans, I hope all democrats will work to keep the majority in the midterms.

Posted by: JS on June 2, 2010 at 5:10 PM | PERMALINK

I completely agree with you. We are very fortunate to have a man of Obama's intelligence, temperament and vision at this very trying time in our nation's history.

The hatred that is directed at him on a daily basis baffles me, it really does.

Posted by: JD on June 2, 2010 at 6:45 PM | PERMALINK

I'm glad McCain/Palin didn't win, but, as pointed out above, that's faint praise indeed.

I might be ecstatic over Obama, but for the deals that he made with the insurance companies and big pharma to throw more taxpayer money their way while doing everything he could to ensure that single-payer could never be seriously discussed.

and for defending and protecting the war criminals of BushCo from any kind of accountability.

and for being gung-ho for more offshore drilling; oops, sorry about your gulf, folks.

and for continuing the anti-constitutional policies of BushCo.

and for sending more troops and taxpayer money to Afghanistan.

and for ridiculous cabaret in search of bipartisanship, trying to work with the pinheads and nitwits who fucked this country over the last eight years.

and for stacking the deficit commission with thieves who want only to kill social security. Hope you are into a big nuclear family--- mama and grandma will be in your basement before you know it.

There is some science that supports the idea that global warming may increase the frequency, range and severity of tornadoes, but it is not as definitive as the link between global warming and extreme precipitation events.

There has been nothing published in the peer-reviewed literature that supports the idea that global warming may increase the frequency, range, and severity of tornadoes. There have been publications that suggest an increase in the frequency of severe thunderstorms, but tornadoes have not been addressed. Potential energy for thunderstorms will likely go up in North America, but the wind shear for their organization will go down. It appears the energy term will "win", but tornadoes depend much more on the shear term than non-tornadic storms do, so it's an open question on the impacts on tornadoes, but from first principles, we'd expect less of an impact than on non-tornadic storms.

Yep, glad we have a cool, poised president escalating a war in Asia and championing fiscal austerity during a time of 10% unemployment. If McCain had won, we'd have had a hot-headed wacko escalating a war in Asia and championing fiscal austerity during a time of 10% unemployment.

Dodged a bullet there, didn't we?
