OVER WHERE?.... We talked yesterday about South Carolina state Sen. Jake Knotts (R), who used racial slurs to go after gubernatorial hopeful Nikki Haley (R), telling a local radio show, "We already got one raghead in the White House, we don't need a raghead in the governor's mansion."

Though he offered a half-hearted apology, Knotts proceeded to dig deeper. Yesterday, he called her a "f**king raghead," and then apologized again -- for the first word in the phrase, not the second.

But to truly appreciate the depths of the stupidity here, consider Knotts' explanation of his worldview. (via Alex Seitz-Wald)

Knotts says he believed Haley has been set up by a network of Sikhs and was programmed to run for governor of South Carolina by outside influences in foreign countries. He claims she is hiding her religion and he wants the voters to know about it. [...]

"We need a good Christian to be our governor," he said. "She's hiding her religion. She ought to be proud of it. I'm proud of my god."

Knotts says he believes Haley's father has been sending letters to India saying that Haley is the first Sikh running for high office in America. He says her father walks around Lexington wearing a turban.

"We're at war over there," Knotts said.

Asked to clarify, he said he did not mean the United States was at war with India, but was at war with "foreign countries."

Every word seems more ignorant than the last. South Carolina's image has taken quite a few hits of late; it didn't need Jake Knotts flaunting his humiliating ignorance quite so shamelessly.

I get the feeling "his God" is not that proud of him...

Damn it.

I am sick and tired of the Christian Right.

Bush became a born again because it sent lots of cash his way.

Ashcroft cringed at naked statues.

Secret prayer meetings where a virtual cult of rapid and vapid holier-than-thou born agains proclaimed their way or the hellway.

No.

My country was crafted in the crucible of William Penn's Holy Experiment, Philadelphia, where all religions were assured a place in society, etc.

I have even met a nuclear submarine commander who was a bible carrying looney.

Scary stuff folks.

Arizona won't take this challenge from SC lying down.

Anywhere not USA is "over there" and thus not American.

Plus, they all look the same.

Typical Tea Party garbage. Everything that isn't white, Christian and American is all one big mismash to Knotts.

He can't be bothered to make a distinction between Indian (specifically Punjabi) and Arab or Taliban, between Sikh and Muslim, or AFAICT between a naturalized citizen and an illegal immigrant.

Racist, religiously bigoted and xenophobic all at once. Though if he just tried a little harder, he could probably have managed to add misogynistic to the list while he was at it.

"We need a good Christian to be our governor,"

This is just the bottom line for these guys and the scary part is that probably something like 90% of the folks in South Carolina would agree. I wonder if their current Gov fits the description.... affair and all.

Oh and tanstaafi -- he probably just forgot to say something sexist, just an oversight.

My issue isn't really with Knotts and his ilk. That's all to be expected. It's with "Nikki" Haley and "Bobby" Jindal, and why the heck they'd be in a party like the GOP.

A good Christian? Like Mark Sanford? Obama and Duncan must continue to push for higher standards in education. Ignorance is rapidly becoming the standard.

I'm beginning to not really care what happens in the South, starting with AZ and going eastward. I think they should all go take a nice long swim in the Gulf and suck up some of those tar balls.

Haley Barbour can lead the way, followed by this Knotts moron.

Who needs the Daily Show, when we have South Carolina?

-And Texas and Arizona, and. . . how many states were there in the Confederacy?

Posted by: DAY on June 5, 2010 at 9:55 AM | PERMALINK

Is it a good thing then that the United States is at war with 'other countries'? Wouldn't the alternative be to be at war with itself?

OK, I know. the last thing you would want to do is to try and extract any sense from the mumbling of the honorable gentleman from SC.

This neanderthal is no different than the "True 'Merican" who gunned down a Sikh-American, shortly, after 9/11 because he thought he was a terrorist. The Sikhs have suffered much. Over 83,000 died with 109,000 wounded in fighting for the British Commonwealth during the first two world wars, yet, their capital, Lahore, was ripped from them and given to the Pakistanis. Even today, tensions between Sikhs and Hindis smoulder. State Senator, you would do well, if you followed their teachings, as, whatever Guru you are following is leading you very far astray.

Just out of curiousity, what metric do people like the Sheriff of Knottinghead use to determine that they are superior to anybody?

How do Republicans look in the mirror in the morning and decide that they and their kind are the best and the brightest that America has to offer? That's one enchanted looking glass.

For a view wrapped in nostalgia keep your eye upon fearless Carolinian's . For as go the Carolina esprit , so goes the indomitable exceptionalism of the guardians of all that is sacred .
Ask not what you may do for America , rather ask where you belong . In a nation measured by its boot heels , it serves an aspirant to manage their courtesies . Being before ones better's , lest an intemperate moment pass , to forget which place they occupy may be the last full price to pay . To be vulnerable enough in revealing an unwholesome colour , or sadly one of those second rate faiths rumoured about , costing all .

Posted by: g on June 5, 2010 at 11:27 AM | PERMALINK

Is it even worth trying to explain to him that the Constitution prohibits religious tests for holding government office? And that the type of religious test he is applying (they're descended from members of X religion, therefore they belong) is not similar to the one Hitler used to define Jews -- it is IDENTICAL to it?

We have to assume that, like "Mikey" Steele, he's found a higher bidder for his soul in the GOP than could be obtained elsewhere. It's the free market system at work.

Since everyone in the US (or ancestors) came from somewhere else -unless they are true americans i.e. American Indians, could someone tell me which country of origin is acceptable to these people.

=========================

But remember that several years ago the Republicans were trying to portray inclusiveness. (Don't look back to these days too quickly unless your insurer is real good about whiplash.) It's actually worked out pretty well for Bobby Jingles, who got into the Conservative Minority Guy business fairly early on -- his story's like the one about the dog walking on its hind legs; it's not that it's well done, it's that it's done at all that's remarkable.

Hey Mister Knotts: Ignorance is NOT bliss. Please - all you Republicans move out of South Carolina right now - it's the quickest way to improve the average IQ in the state. Not only did y'all not pay attention in school, you didn't even pay attention in Sunday school. Get out of government and get back to the Republican wildlife refuges (golf courses) where you can't do as much harm.

If I asked Knotts what countries the U.S. is at war with, he would look at me as if I was stupid and say "How can you not know that? We are at war with Afghanistan and Irak."
