IF YOU THOUGHT BURTON WAS BAD.... If you followed politics in the mid- to late-'90s, you may recall the tragedy of the House Committee On Oversight and Government Reform. Led by its ridiculous chairman, Rep. Dan Burton (R) of Indiana, the panel launched pointless investigations into every wild-eyed Clinton-related accusation unhinged activists could manufacture.

In one instance, Burton held hearings -- for 10 days -- on the Clintons' Christmas card list. In another, Burton fired a bullet into a "head-like object" -- reportedly a melon -- in his backyard to test his conspiracy theories about Vince Foster. Over the last six years of Bill Clinton's presidency, Burton's committee unilaterally issued 1,052 subpoenas -- that's not a typo -- to investigate baseless allegations of misconduct. That translates to an average of a politically-inspired subpoena every other day for six consecutive years, including weekends, holidays, and congressional recesses.

Burton, of course, wasn't just some talk-radio shock-jock or publicity-hungry activist; he was the chairman of a congressional committee with oversight authority over the White House. And he wielded that gavel as if he were a fringe blogger with a chip on his shoulder.

And if Republicans retake the House majority after the midterms, Darrell Issa will make Dan Burton look like a meek, submissive toady.

Rep. Darrell Issa, the conservative firebrand whose specialty is lobbing corruption allegations at the Obama White House, is making plans to hire dozens of subpoena-wielding investigators if Republicans win the House this fall.

The California Republican's daily denunciations draw cheers from partisans and bookings from cable TV producers. He even bought his own earphone for live shots. But his bombastic style and attention-seeking investigations draw eye rolls from other quarters. Now, he's making clear he won't be so easy to shrug off if he becomes chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in 2011.

Issa has told Republican leadership that if he becomes chairman, he wants to roughly double his staff from 40 to between 70 and 80. And he is not subtle about what that means for President Barack Obama.

Issa, who even some Republicans perceive as an embarrassing clown, has specifically promised to leave "corporate America" alone, so he can attack the White House relentlessly.

Of course, the more Issa takes on a high-profile role, the more scrutiny he's likely to receive. Given Issa's background, that's probably not a good thing -- the guy was, after all, an alleged car thief who lied about his military background. It's a record Democrats are likely to make note of if Issa starts throwing stones in his glass house.

Wasn't Issa also responsible for recalling California's unpopular governor, replacing him with a now even more unpopular governor?

This Issa is a real creep, I cannot stand to look at him, can we get some attention to his car theft days and his other troubles, and get it into the mainstream media?

Posted by: jJS on June 18, 2010 at 2:16 PM | PERMALINK

Burton just won the primary and is a shoe in to win the general and he's my fucking rep. Ugh, what a disgrace.

Don't forget the insurance fire at his old business. The guy is my congressman, I'm sorry to say. Recently he proudly posed for a picture at the expansion of a major highway in my area, paid for with the stimulus he voted against.

On Issa's statement that he received a commendation from Gen'l Clark, it reads like a standard OER, they are pretty much all the same (if you have not been proved to be a crook), some commanders even let the squadron first sgts write them then they are put on the commanders desk for signature, it's usually cut and dried and all you have to do is be there every day to be satisfactory (unless there is some outstanding achievement, and if so - that would be addressed in the OER.

Burton ... Barton ... Yet someone the American booboisie managed to elect GW Bush and plenty of ReBPublicans into office in 2000. They wouldn't have without plenty of help from a fraudulent media system.

It's amazing how important HCR was in forming my opinion of Obama. I could never quite figure out what to make of Obama, and that was a make or break moment for me that would tell me if, in the final analysis, he was a good President doing the best he could, or Joe Lieberman. If the Dems had given up on the goal line, I would have seriously become an independent - there was no point in waiting around for these guys to wise up any more.

If they pulled it together and got HCR, I was on the team.

So for me, at least, I don't need a reminder of how horrible the GOP has been to get me to vote or be invested in this election.

If the Republicans win the House in November, we have a lot more to worry about than Issa. See Paul Krugman's column today, effectively forecasting a Depression if their policies prevail.

Posted by: Keith on June 18, 2010 at 2:40 PM | PERMALINK

And he is being assisted by leftist pundits and activists who claim that Obama is no better than the Republicans. I now longer watch the evening MSNBC line-up; they are all too fevered and absurd.

Posted by: Amy on June 18, 2010 at 2:41 PM | PERMALINK

I think it's pretty clear that if the Repubs win back the House, President Obama will be impeached (for something, anything) before election day 2012. The GOP learned its lesson from the last impeachment: There are no political consequences whatsoever.

If you don't want this to happen, please please get out and vote in November.

One has to wonder, why do people vote in useless pieces of work like Issa?

All that I've seen of his congressional career is him raising points of order and procedure in order to filibuster hearings and votes on bills.

@Amy: well said.

Posted by: June on June 18, 2010 at 2:46 PM | PERMALINK

We know the GOP modus operandi by now. If the Democrats win the Presidency, the election is illegitimate, and it is the duty of the opposition party to overturn the results by any means necessary. That means lobbing accusations in the hopes that eventually something will stick, even if it's only an unpaid parking ticket from 1974, which you can then use as grounds for impeachment.

This is too easy; From the Daryll Issa Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darrell_Issa

Allegations of criminal involvement in early years

In 1971, Issa allegedly stole a Dodge sedan from an Army post near Pittsburgh. The allegation was made by a retired Army sergeant, and published in a 1998 newspaper article. Issa denied the allegation. No charges were filed.[27][28]

In 1972, Issa and his brother allegedly stole a red Maserati sports car from a car dealership in Cleveland. He and his brother were indicted for car theft, but the case was dropped.[27][28]

Also in 1972, Issa was convicted in Michigan for possession of an unregistered gun. He received three months probation and paid a $204 fine.[29]

On December 28, 1979, Issa and his brother allegedly faked the theft of Issa's Mercedes Benz sedan. Issa and his brother were charged for grand theft auto, but the case was dropped by prosecutors for lack of evidence. Later, Issa and his brother were charged for misdemeanors, but that case was not pursued by prosecutors. Issa accused his brother of stealing the car, and said that the experience with his brother was the reason he went into the car alarm business.[27][28]

A day after a court order was issued, giving Issa control of automotive alarm company A.C. Custom over an unpaid $60,000 debt, Issa allegedly carried a cardboard box containing a handgun into the office of A.C. Custom executive, Jack Frantz, and told Frantz he was fired. In a 1998 newspaper article, Frantz said Issa had invited him to hold the gun and claimed extensive knowledge of guns and explosives from his Army service. In response, Issa said, "Shots were never fired. ... I don't recall having a gun. I really don't. I don't think I ever pulled a gun on anyone in my life."[29]

Wasn't Issa also responsible for recalling California's unpopular governor, replacing him with a now even more unpopular governor?

Issa had delusions that he could recall Gray Davis and then get himself elected governor in the recall election. As with so many of Issa's decisions, he didn't understand the consequences of what he was doing and the whole thing turned into a total circus with dozens of candidates running. The only person who could rise above the noise was someone with the fame of Schwarzenegger. (Not to mention Ah-nold had backing of Enron and other utility companies, but anyway ...)

Posted by: Mnemosyne on June 18, 2010 at 3:21 PM | PERMALINK

My favorite Issa moment:
After having helped finance the gathering of signatures to force a recall of Governor Gray Davis, Issa's dream of becoming the next California governor were dashed when Arnold Schwarzenegger entered the free-for-all race. In the press conference that Issa called to announce his decision to withdraw from the election, he was literally in tears. Sometimes, there is justice in the world.

Posted by: josef on June 18, 2010 at 4:27 PM | PERMALINK

I there were justice in the world, Issa would be an ex-con scrounging beverage containers along the roadside for the recycle value, and mumbling to himself about "those people" who were out to get him.

Posted by: joel hanes on June 18, 2010 at 4:40 PM | PERMALINK

Yes, Issa is indeed the clown who inadvertently put Arnold Schwarzenegger in the California Governor's Mansion (actually, that's not true: Arnold doesn't live in the mansion -- he lives in a hotel across the street from the Capitol) and Issa did cry when he realized that his bankroll (from, of all things, the Viper car alarm) wouldn't buy him the Governorship.

Issa's district is just to the north of the district in which I live -- Randy "Duke" Cunningham's former district.

We have soooo much wonderful representation in Congress here in northern San Diego county.

the guy was, after all, an alleged car thief who lied about his military background. It's a record Democrats are likely to make note of if Issa starts throwing stones in his glass house.

Democrats need to do ads on Issa like they are doing on Barton, pointing out to people that if you let the Republicans win, this is what you're going to get. Be a good idea to go after the lead guy on health care the same way, also his Congressman Sunshine, er, I mean Bonehead, er, Boehner.

Democrats need to realize that if they sit this one out like they sat out the election of 1994, they're going to get the Gingrich Congress on super-steroids and methamphetamine. This election for America could be as consequential as the election of 1933 was for Germany. If we continue to do nothing about energy, the environment, roll back what little regulations are left, gut the Labor Department, give blowjobs to Wall Street and the boys in the Houston Petroleum Club, things are going to be irremediably, unfixably screwed up.

@June asked:

One has to wonder, why do people vote in useless pieces of work like Issa?

His congressional district is northern San Diego Country: Morons, er, I mean Mormons, and retired Marines are his constituents.

Amy is wrong, they are really leftists.

Posted by: neil b on June 18, 2010 at 5:28 PM | PERMALINK

I mean, they aren't really leftists.

Posted by: neil b.2 on June 18, 2010 at 5:53 PM | PERMALINK

This is really a story about nothing.
The minority always has a staff about 1/2 the size of the majority. If Issa and the Republicans take control, naturally they would double the size of the staff as they become the majority.
Not planning ahead is just bad management.
