VITTER ENDORSES FRIVOLOUS 'BIRTHER' LAWSUITS.... I know the scandal-plagued senator is facing a credible primary challenge, which no doubt pushes him even further to the right, but does Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) really have to go this far? Apparently so.

Republican Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana says he supports conservative organizations challenging President Barack Obama's citizenship in court.

Vitter, who is running for re-election, made the comments at a town hall-style event in Metairie, La., on Sunday when a constituent asked what he would do about what the questioner said was Obama's "refusal to produce a valid birth certificate."

Such claims about Obama's birth certificate have been discredited.

Well, sure, of course they have. But an apparent supporter nevertheless asked Vitter at the event what the senator would do about the president's birth certificate -- and the assembled crowd thought that was a great question.

Perhaps motivated by the audience's response, Vitter endorsed birthers' lawsuits. While the far-right senator conceded he wouldn't have legal standing to file the suit, and doesn't want to "focus on that issue," Vitter nevertheless explained, "But I support conservative legal organizations and others who would bring that to court. I think that is the valid and most possibly effective grounds to do it."

I don't really expect Vitter to chastise supporters who ask stupid questions at town hall-style events, but for a sitting senator to publicly endorse birther litigation is pretty crazy.

Given Vitter's background -- the guy did get caught in a prostitution scandal after running on a "family values" platform -- it's wise to keep expectations low. But even he should know better than this.

It's all a misunderstanding. Vitter mistook "birther suits" for diapers.

Of course all those good southern white folk would think it was a good question. It goes against God's will that "that man" would be in the White House.

TCinLA,

The correct term is "that boy". When discussing the anti-God, anti-American South, it is good form to use the socially accepted term. Otherwise, they might "rise up" and get their asses handed to them again by the righteous patriotic Union. And does anyone really want to have to go through the trouble of getting Klan-loving cracker traitor out of their uniform? Regular bleach just can't quite remove the smell of sister-f*cker in less than 10 washings.

Where are the calls for Vitter to be charged with the crime he committed? Where's the bible thumpers?

In September 2004 David Vitter voted in favor of a bill barring "frivolous lawsuits."

He is either a birther himself or he is encouraging his constituents to file a frivolous lawsuit.

Which is it?

Okay, I know the birther stuff is a load of crapola, but look at this another way: a US Senator acknowledges that there may be reason to believe that the office of the President is occupied by an illegitimate person -- and he's doing nothing about it??????????? He doesn't want to "focus on that issue"?

Sorry, Dave, you can't have it both ways. If there was the remotest chance that the birthers are right, then it ought to be your top priority. As it is, you're clearly pandering to the birther crowd, but your actions prove that you don't believe them for a minute.

There really is no need for Vitter to soil himself and behave like a baby concerning this matter.

OK, so I was born in Illinois. The hospital's been out of business, torn down and replaced by something else for over fifty years. Everybody but me who was present in the delivery room is dead or will be any minute now.

If I ask the State of Illinois for my birth certificate, I'll get pretty much the same thing Obama's got. If I ask for something somehow more authentic, I'll be told that there ain't no such, because there really ain't no such.

So I say Obama's birth certificate is as good as mine. Where do these birther buffoons get off trying to hold Obama to a standard that can't be met? Unless, of course, they're the racist scum they appear to be.

Where is Vitter's birth certificate? Can we see it please?

Posted by: citizen_pain on July 13, 2010 at 12:59 PM | PERMALINK

Well it depends, Cap'n Chucky. Are you white? If so, you're clearly a good ol' God-fearing Amurikin. If not, well, we're gonna need to see your long form.

One can hardly imagine the contempt people like Vitter must feel for their "supporters." Because, contrary to someone like Sharron Angle, Michelle Bachmann, or Michael Steele, Vitter, for all his faults, doesn't seem to be blissfully ignorant of reality.

I shouldn't be surprised with this. Not only is Vitter a shameless hypocrite, he is also, for lack of a better word, a moron. And I don't mean in "believes in some silly things" moronic like a lot of Republicans; I mean he literally is a very stupid man.

Uh, birth certificates aren't kept at the hospital... they're filed with the County Clerk or Recorder, where Obama's is currently on file in Hawaii. Your's is probably the same place in whatever county Il, cap'n.

Idiots like David (Man Diapers) Vitter, and Bobby (the Exorcist) Jindal have made me begin to seriously question the presumption intelligence that I used to give to "Rhodes Scholars".

Posted by: MJ on July 13, 2010 at 2:24 PM | PERMALINK

Best I can figure out, the "long form" they keep asking about is the fancy hospital birth certificate a lot of us get (that has no legal use in getting passports, military ID's, etc.) Hospital (or midwife) files with the state or county to make it count. The only useful birth certificate is the state or county issued one that, to the birthers, is infuriatingly short

Posted by: jeff on July 13, 2010 at 2:28 PM | PERMALINK

Where is John McCain's birth certificate?

Posted by: Snarki, child of Loki on July 13, 2010 at 3:06 PM | PERMALINK

Such claims about Obama's birth certificate have been discredited.

There goes that liberal media again, undercutting the conservative narrative by pointing out facts.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but if memory serves me right, the statute of limitations has expired.

Which doesn't reduce the hypocrisy of so called "family values Republicans" one iota, of course.

I'm writing this because I haven't heard this argument before. I've been waiting,
but I haven't heard it.

I was in the Air Force in the 1970's with a job that required a top security
clearance. I got this clearance and upon my first leave, I found an actual
investigation was conducted. Some of my neighbors, friends, and teachers informed me
that announced FBI agents questioned them about my character.

When I first heard this 'Obama was not born in the USA', my first thinking was how
could the FBI or the Secret Service allow this. Do we, as a nation, think that these
two agencies would not perform a background check, much more extensive than mine, on
the potential commander-in-chief? Do you believe that an individual can do a more
thorough background check than a federal agency like the FBI or the Secret Service?

Posted by: rpace16 on July 13, 2010 at 9:42 PM | PERMALINK

Obama got security clearance done when he was a Senator, to meet the Senate rules for sitting on certain committees. Whatever standards the FBI has for this sort of thing, Obama met them years ago.
