DGA UNVEILS 'NEVER SURRENDER' VIDEO.... The Democratic Governors Association hinted this morning that it was launching a new grassroots effort today, as the election-year drive grows more intense. I just didn't expect it to be this amusing.

This video, which the DGA press release concedes is "provocative," features a great movie montage of inspirational moments. The clip, called "Never Surrender," includes scenes from Animal House, Network, Lord of the Rings, 300, Miracle, Cool Runnings, League of their Own, Rocky, and perhaps most amusingly, a line from Die Hard 2. "Never Surrender" will be formally unveiled at Netroots Nation 2010 in Las Vegas.

It's all part of what the DGA's "Fight the Right" initiative. In a press release, DGA executive director Nathan Daschle said, "This is a volatile political environment -- all the more reason to rally our base. Today's Republican party is dominated by the Tea Party-Sarah Palin fringe, which is forcing candidates further and further to the right. Governors are traditionally immune to ideological purity contests, but today's GOP won't accept anything short of rigid adherence to an out-of-touch dogma. All this at a time when the stakes in the 37 governors' races this fall couldn't be higher -- they'll affect Congressional majorities, redistricting, the 2012 Presidential race, not to mention the lives of hardworking men and women."

If you're interested, you might want to check out the video sooner rather than later -- if any of the movie studios happen to notice the clip and raise a fuss about copyright issues, the DGA might not be able to keep "Never Surrender" up very long.

Well, its pretty funny but its astonishingly sexist. What? No pictures of Norma Rae? The women from Harlan County USA? Thelma and Louise? Much as I liked it--and I"m sure they won't be able to keep it up in the face of the barrage of criticism from the right and from the copywrite owners--I'd have liked to see a few more chicks. We can be damned progressive and agressive, if you give us the chance.

Oh good lord, REALLY? This is practically the same video they play at Braves games down here at the bottom of the ninth when they're down by four runs and the stadium doesn't want everyone to jump the gun on running to their cars. Other than Network, literally the same damn movie clips.

It will attract lots of lyric youth etc. but it looks too silly for me. I think they need tough, even a grave assault on the evils.

Posted by: neil b on July 22, 2010 at 12:47 PM | PERMALINK

Do they not realize that female governors are some of their strongest candidates? Honestly, what is wrong with them?

Posted by: Shrink in SF on July 22, 2010 at 12:51 PM | PERMALINK

WAS IT OVER WHEN THE GERMANS BOMBED PEARL HARBOR?!

Okay, not a horrific, but, yeah -- seen a lot like it before.

It is nice, however, to see them being a bit more edgy. And agree that there are scenes from Norma Rae that would have been awesome to use.

Posted by: Mark D on July 22, 2010 at 12:52 PM | PERMALINK

Besides its sexism, its reflection of politicos strange inability to grasp the fundamentals of copyright law, and its undue militarism, the biggest sin of this video is the complete lack of imagination and creativity.

To me it screams "Shit, we're cooked! Let's try a hail Mary!"

Why oh why can't we have better leaders...

BTW, all the cries of "sexism!!" etc. etc. are exactly why we democrats are so bloody boring.

It's about emotion, it's about a "to the barricades!" mentality. It isn't, and shouldn't, be about political correctness.

It is too cluttered and too dark. I would have loved something from Norma Rae, but I have no idea why anyone would suggest Thelma and Louise. After all they are driving over a cliff.

the dga is running a great ad in illinois emphasizing how anti-woman the repub candidate is. i'd link to it if i knew how.
btw, i've always liked:

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men (and women, too)?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Posted by: hells littlest angel on July 22, 2010 at 2:22 PM | PERMALINK

Damn you people are depressing. Even an effort to get spirits up is just attacked with derision and scorn, as we're assured that it's not good enough and is an admission of defeat.

The people who insist that Dems are too wimpy are usually the ones who already gave up before the fight started. Maybe if you want stronger Dems, you should get out there and lead, rather than denouncing anyone who tries.

If you're so good, make your own damn videos. Nobody's stopping you, but yourselves.

Jeeze. What a bunch of nitpicking and whining...

This crowd reminds me of a joke about this college town I live in. He said, "around here, even if Jesus invited everyone to the Last Supper, all he'd get were complaints the bread was stale."

"Spine." Look it up.

Posted by: Hemmingplay on July 22, 2010 at 2:34 PM | PERMALINK

The shortage of women is troubling, especially given that Nancy Pelosi seems like the only Dem leader with some actual beans. But I found the clip kind of fun. Too bad they didn't let Belushi ask, "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" But I suppose that's too Bush-like.

Posted by: kw on July 22, 2010 at 2:37 PM | PERMALINK

That's what I'm talking about, Doctor Biobrain!
What works best is pro-active, positive and informed discourse. Guide people to places where they can get accurate information and suggest they avoid negative and biased sites and networks. If you are not a good writer, find someone who is or copy some good analyses of topics you find compelling. Be brief, but don't abuse context. As we have seen with Shirley Sherrod, context is very important and excluding critical information eventually comes back to hurt your cause.

Oh honest to Pete, STOP IT! It was FUN! It's like a CHEER. OF COURSE, it was sexist. The movies they took it from were sexist but nobody made a stink back then. It's kinda like saying Mark Twain was racist. Yes, and...now STOP over-analyzing everything. Get your SPIRITS up and get out there and talk to everyone you KNOW with informed debate and a smile on your face.

Posted by: SYSPROG on July 22, 2010 at 2:51 PM | PERMALINK

Sorry haters, this is great. THIS is the type of stuff progressives should be doing. Fight the Right? exactly.

Posted by: Alli on July 22, 2010 at 2:52 PM | PERMALINK

The left should be embarrassed. Not only did the tea party out organize you, but the DGA and the DNC are doing some really creative things for the mid-term. The accountability project, bp republicans, 'this is how they would govern', and now Fight the Right - all these should have come from you guys. All this talk about how Dems need you, but you haven't given them reason to kiss the ground that you walk on. Show them how its done if you all think you can do better coming up with a campaign theme.

Posted by: Alli on July 22, 2010 at 2:59 PM | PERMALINK

Actually no, Mark Twain wasn't racist.

Have you even read him?

Posted by: Nothing But the Ruth on July 22, 2010 at 3:22 PM | PERMALINK

I'm not sure if this term is in widespread use among screenwriters, but according to Joss Whedon, this kind of scene is called a St. Crispin's Day Speech, after the famous scene from Henry V:

"this is about emotions not logic"

mens emotions? that's fine if they're the only voters. Oh, sorry about that.

"this is what's wrong with democrats too much whining and political correctness"

Really? and all this time I thought their problem was running from a fight and trying to make republicans hand them the "talking stick".

We need feisty SMART power. That includes all the voices of people who are going to get out the vote in november.

Posted by: Shrink in SF on July 22, 2010 at 3:40 PM | PERMALINK

Shrink said: "We need feisty SMART power. That includes all the voices of people who are going to get out the vote in November."

Sure we do. But no single ad is the total message.

And where Democrats have lost ground most dramatically is among white MEN. That's significant. That's serious, come NOvember.

A little muscular messaging like this one doesn't hurt a bit.

Posted by: Hemmingplay on July 22, 2010 at 3:51 PM | PERMALINK

I'm probably of the minority opinion here, but I found that video to be incredibly relentless and cheesy. And I'd bet that you're ultimately correct about the prospective enforcement of copyright law by the movie studios, which will render it a complete waste of someone's creative talents and time.

Generally speaking, people don't get fired up politically without cause or purpose, and no string of movie clips held together by a bass-laden soundtrack is going to change that basic political dynamic. And I don't care how many strategically gratuitous shots you include of pumped-up, half-naked Spartan muscle gods with heaving, sweaty pecs as they ritually prepare themselves for battle, polishing their phallic-inspired helmets while wearing little more than artfully-torn black dinner napkins (sigh!) ...

Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes - look, if Democratic operatives would like some lessons about effectively infusing pop culture with a progressive political message, they should listen to Stephanie Miller on the nation's radio airwaves (7-10 a.m. PDT, M-F). She and her cohorts cut the right-wing some new ones on a daily basis, making me laugh while also inspiring me to do something more than plan our next vacation in Mykonos or South Beach.

Ciao for now, y'all.

Looks like we need a younger perspective here. This is a straight knockoff of a YouTube viral classic with 2.6 million views called "40 inspirational speeches in 2 minutes" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6wRkzCW5qI].

It's not exactly the same but definitely a knockoff.

And people, arguing about whether this video is sexist or if whoever made it isn't serious is a waste of time. This is a fun little youtube video that will at least put a smile on a bewildered Dem's face.

Lighten up.

If you really wanna be inspired for this fall, I recommend Al Pacino's "Inch by Inch" speech in Any Given Sunday or Bill Pullman's speech in Independence Day (both are in that link above). In my opinion those are the greatest inspirational movie speeches of all time.

Well, I liked it. And I like the name "Fight the Right." That's snappy. I think it is as good as Mama Grizzlies. And I really appreciate that someone on the left is trying to energize us, get us focused. I could do with some muscular leadership on the Left. The video itself is a silly, derivative mish-mash, but, yeh, all sorts of good things on YouTube are silly in this way.

I'll bet they could even do a riff of the Old Spice Man ("Look at me, now look at the Republican candidate. Now back to me.") and I'd enjoy it.

But really, the response is to whine that it is sexist and not original? That's missing the forest for the trees, people.

Now, let's get out there and kick some butt!!!

Posted by: pcw on July 22, 2010 at 4:12 PM | PERMALINK

So the fact that I have no idea how to make a mashup video means I'm unqualified to critique those who do?
By that logic, nobody except political and/or media insiders would have the right to post commentary here; sure you want to try to make that case?
That said, it's great that they're doing something that might actually get noticed, and set a few hearts to racing. But it's also true that it might have been just a tad more effective if there had been more than one woman with a spoken line -- or, for that matter, the line consisted of more than one word.
And while we're at it, is there nobody working for them under the age of 40? Two thirds of the movies used weren't even made in this millennium, and of the 1/3 that were, the most recent one is four years old.
And finally, it would have been a good thing if, to remind people that there are distinctions between Republicans and Democrats, and that the distinctions actually matter, somebody had actually gotten copyright clearances from the IP rights-holders. The Publicans are infamous for using the musical property of artists without permission -- Springsteen ("Born in the USA"), Heart ("Barracuda"), Don Henley ("The Boys of Summer"), Check Berry ("Johnny B. Goode"), David Byrne ("Road to Nowhere"), John Hall ("Still the One"), Jackson Brown ("Running on Empty"), Tom Petty ("I Won't Back Down"), and of course, the best-known case, Chrissie Hynde/The Pretenders ("My City Was Gone"). A good chance to have shown, in some tiny way, that Democrats actually mean what they say about standing up for people's rights...
I mean, they do, don't they?

Posted by: smartalek on July 22, 2010 at 4:14 PM | PERMALINK

Too bad they are afraid to attack the lunatic enemy. The video is insulting and pathetic.

Posted by: Michael7843853 on July 22, 2010 at 4:43 PM | PERMALINK

@Nothing but the Ruth at 3:22PM

Sysprog was not saying Mark Twain was racist. She was saying the complaints about this clip were like claiming Mark Twain was racist.

In fact, Mark Twain's characters, particularly in Huck Finn, did reflect a lot of what we would consider racist attitudes and certainly used a lot of racist language. But since the novel was set in the pre-Civil War south, that is only to be expected. And the overarching theme of Huck Finn, aside from being a fun adventure story, was of Huck's journey from unconsciously accepting all of his culture's views of black slaves to realizing the Jim was a human being, fully deserving of the same dignity as any other.

Posted by: tanstaafl on July 22, 2010 at 4:55 PM | PERMALINK

btw, I agree with Doctor Biobrain and the others that followed him.

The critics of this video need to grow up and get active. This was a net video intended to rally the troops and have a little fun, if you think it needed to be spiced up a bit, make your own.

Posted by: tanstaafl on July 22, 2010 at 5:00 PM | PERMALINK

To the critics: What a bunch of whinny, PC hobbled, know-it-alls.

If you can make a better inspirational video for the fall, do it.

Let's see any of you put your neck out on the line and face criticism.

Pathetic...

Btw, if you don't know how to make a clip like this, at least think up all the items you think should be in it (like Norma Rae) and take to time to go find the specifc parts you think they should include and send them a list with each one identified by movie title, character, exact quote and time stamp.

Posted by: tanstaafl on July 22, 2010 at 5:05 PM | PERMALINK

Get the Norma Rae clips and add them to this one with the "Song of Angry Men" as the music:
