TESTING THE LIMITS OF GRABBING THE THIRD RAIL.... In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower (R) wrote a letter to his brother. "Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history," Ike said. The president acknowledged in the letter that there are some who advocate such nonsense, but added, "Their number is negligible and they are stupid."
Eisenhower's Republican Party has come a long way in the last half-century, and what was once considered fringe stupidity has become far more common. And with Social Security celebrating its 75th anniversary, there's a renewed effort to shine a light on the GOP's willingness to gut this bedrock American institution, if not eliminate it altogether.
The Republican push is not without some precedent. In 1936, repealing Social Security was part of the GOP platform. Seven decades later, George W. Bush launched a ridiculous privatization scheme that the nation strongly rejected, and which congressional Republicans want to great lengths to avoid.
This year, opposition to Social Security throughout the Republican Party is at its strongest, most pervasive levels since the mid-'30s. With that in mind, the DNC released this web video overnight, using the anniversary to remind folks which party supports Social Security, and which doesn't.
"From Sharron Angle to Rand Paul and from Paul Ryan to John Boehner -- Republicans are talking about either phasing out Social Security entirely or making such radical changes to it as to dismantle and make it unrecognizable to the successful program it has been for 75 years," DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse said.
An initiative like this one serves a few different purposes. The first is pretty basic -- Social Security is popular, and Republican plans to undermine it aren't. The second has to do with demographics -- seniors tend to vote in large numbers; they're very big fans of Social Security; and they're not especially happy with Democrats right now. A push like this one may hope to give Dems a boost with a key age group.
But in the bigger picture, I think there's a more subtle point, and it gets back to the Eisenhower quote. The American mainstream embraces Social Security as a pillar of American life. It's been one of the most, if not the most, successful domestic government program in our nation's history. The country tends to look at those who would undermine this institution as being radical, or in Ike's word, stupid.
And yet, in 2010, leading GOP voices, positions of power and influence, haven't been particularly shy about their desire to privatize Social Security, cut benefits, or pursue the wholesale elimination of the program.
If the goal is to characterize Republicans as extremists, this effort seems to fit the bill.

Nice ad.
But why don't they add at the end, "Vote for the Democratic candidates in your area to keep your SS intact."

Whatever plan they come up with - and you can be sure they'll wait as long as possible before actually putting a plan on paper - they'll make sure that benefits for present retirees are protected. And probably benefits for people currently over, say, 55 as well. Old white racists are the GOP base. Boehner et al may be cynical, power-crazed douchebags, but they're not stupid.

@ basilisc
But even old white racist would want to see some social security for their children and grand children.Even more so if they themselves have seen the benefits of the program.

Um, yeah you got a rather large problem here. It is Barack Obama who has appointed the cat food commission, comprised of at least as many dems as reps. It is DEMOCRATS who will most likely vote yay on whatever the cfc recommends(likely massive cuts in ss and medicare) and it is Barack Obama who will sign those recommendations into law. The death of ss and medicare is going to be led by DEMOCRATS.

One change I would like to see is allowing anyone who qualifies for SS payments to choose, on an annual basis, to forego those payments in exchange for an income tax deduction of equal value. The net funds saved should then be invested in some sort of infrastructure pool or fund (can something like that be monetized to allow raising of additional funds??) that then gets used to help invest needed infrastructure projects across the country. Or, at a minimum, those funds can be invested in the markets in an attempt to further help SS funding.

A few slogans for this fall:
A vote for Republicans is a vote to destroy the middle class!
Republicans want to destroy Social Security!
Help granny die faster, vote for a Republican!
Complete the middle class take over of our government, vote for a Democrat!
Are you filthy rich? No? Then don't be so stupid as to vote for Republicans!
Help save decent common sense, vote for your local Democrat!
Glenn Beck is the Eric Cartman of our nation! -Kevo

Why does Boehner keep crying?
His colleagues say he does it more often later in the day!

That's what happens when the fringe takes over a party.

It’s amazing, isn’t it? Never does Obama take blame/fault for anything. Nothing. It’s always, so and so, not Obama, for he is far too intelligent, far too smart (11 dimensional chess ya know), far too caring. This man has better teflon coating than Clinton had.

A little context is helpful here. I literally don't know anyone under 50 who thinks they're going to collect SS. That is, the right has successfully poisoned the well by endlessly repeating the lie that it's going broke. Also, recall that during W's 2005 Magical Mystery SS Tour, nearly every skeptic interviewed on TV was someone already old. We may think this issue is a big winner for Democrats but that assumes people haven't already been persuaded of an alternative reality.

Look folks, Obama just ain’t that into you. He filled his cabinet with corporatist failures. He threw the left under the bus as soon as he beat Hillary.
It is amazing how many progressives still pretend he supports them un sum type of secret agenda; blaming the right, saying he is just playing 3D chess, etc. Folks, it is not as though, it is just a coincidence that Wall St and the Bankster always get their way. That is what happens after Bush & Obama hands them all our money, in pay to play DC.

The American mainstream embraces Social Security as a pillar of American life.
That's is why they've spent the last decade or so attacking it's stability and appealing to the base selfishness of the younger generation.
The lie that Social Security is not sustainable and won't be available during the twilight years of contemporary youth has damaged that pillar.
I wouldn't underestimate the appeal of that message.

Obama: "I hope some of these folks who are hollering about deficit and debt step up cause I’m calling their bluff."
Obama is not going to dismantle SS or MC, all of you idiot commenters. The deficit commission will find out that SS is looking good for many years, and more work on fixing Healthcare will fix MC.

They'll never be portrayed as "extreme" as long as the idea of a 50-50 Senate is the masturbatory fantasy of Beltway MSM asshats like Mike Allen.
The corporatized consolidated MSM doesn't give a rat's ass about what happens to the country anymore. All they want is to maximize sweet, delicious, juicy dramatic, ratings-enhancing conflict. If it takes soft-peddling the fact that the Republicans have completely lost their minds, its a small price to pay. Because just think of the stories those crazy guys will generate with their crazy plans to destroy Social Security and impeach Obama and default on the national debt!

Did you hear Eisenhower's granddaughter speak at the Democratic convention in 2008? I don't know if she is a republican, but she sure was an Obama supporter.

The scariest thing is that there are democrats (so-called) making similar noises. Obama may not go to the extremes that republicans would, but he will use the debt commission report as an excuse to make changes that will put SS on the road to oblivion.
To kurtrex - Where does mccain stand, you ask? It depends on which way the wind is blowing.

boiled down to its essence, the republican philosophy of "government is the problem" demands that all successful, popular government programs be destroyed.

"...which party supports Social Security, and which doesn't."
Remind me again who appointed the folks on the Catfood Commission to dismantle Social Security. Then tell me once more that the Democratic establishment isn't to the right of Eisenhower.

Re: "Catfood Commission".
Any recommendations from said commission must first pass the House of Representatives. Which is currently led by Speaker Pelosi. And which is also up for re-election every two years. Now tell me, just how many of those Representatives are going to vote to "dismantle" Social Security?
Any recommendation for SS cuts/changes won't happen without a corresponding recommendation for increases in taxes. There could also be sizable Defense Department cuts recommended. Without the tax increases, at least, there is absolutely no way the commission would even be able to issue a "recommendation". The moment a tax increase is included in the recemmendations, of course, every Republican in the House will vote against it. If they don't, the Democrats will vote against any tinkering with SS. Something to do with losing the following elections, I understand.
Really, if idiotic, soi-desant "progressives" didn't spread Republican propaganda for free, the GOP would have a lot less money to spend during elections...
