NELSON'S STILL-MISPLACED PRIORITIES.... In the weeks leading up to the Senate's August recess, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) effectively drew a line in the sand -- he wouldn't vote for anything, regardless of merit, if it increased the deficit. He opposed extending unemployment benefits, for example, because they weren't fully paid for, and that was more important than aid for the jobless.

Confronted in June with a bill to boost the economy, Nelson balked because only part of the bill was paid for. "[T]he American people are right," he said at the time. "We've got to stop doing that."

Putting aside Nelson's finger on the pulse of the nation -- most evidence suggests the public is far more concerned with the economy than the deficit -- the conservative Nebraskan hasn't given up on this misplaced priorities. Even during the recess, Ben Nelson continues to annoy.

Centrist Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) said Tuesday he plans to introduce legislation that would require unused portions of the recently-passed state aid package to go toward bringing down the federal budget deficit.

President Obama last week signed the $26 billion state aid package after the House returned from recess to approve it. Nelson said that his legislation would apply to the $10 billion education jobs fund included in the bill.

"The new law will keep thousands of teachers on the job across our country and I'm pleased that it is fully paid for by cutting other federal spending and closing foreign tax loopholes for businesses," Nelson said in a statement. "If a state or states, however, don't need the additional money, we should make sure the unused funds aren't shipped off to other states. Instead, the unused funds should pay down the federal deficit."

Heaven forbid that money intended for one state might save some jobs in another. What really matters is whether we can reduce the deficit by a fraction of a fraction of a percent.

Except that's ridiculous. The economy is struggling, and needs stimulus. There's a jobs crisis. The whole point of the state-aid jobs bill was to spend some money and save some jobs. Nelson insisted that bill be paid for -- itself a rather silly, since the government is supposed to deficit spend during difficult economic times -- and it was.

But before the funding even starts to kick in, Nelson is already preoccupied with getting some of it back and lowering a deficit that should rank very low on his list of priorities.

If the Democrats continue to allow the Republicans to set the political agenda -- The Cordoba House, the "deficit problem," etc. -- then they have nobody but themselves to blame for the problems it causes.

We own the White House AND both houses of Congress! Where the hell is the leadership?

Lets see how principled Nelson is the next time an Ag bill makes its way to the Senate floor. I bet his "principles" melt like a late winter snow on a warm spring day.

The Imp of the Perverse in me says the Senate should delete all "deficit-increasing" measures that affect Nebraska.

The NYT reported today that some School Districts are holding the money to protect against future cuts rather than spending it on teachers now. If this would force the states to force the districts to spend now, I'd be OK with that.

Nelson is still completely wretched.

he wouldn't vote for anything, regardless of merit, if it increased the deficit.

Even the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan?

(Serious question -- they aren't close to fully funded; does he vote against them?)

Why is Nelson (and Blanche Lincoln) called a "centrist"? Being on the far right of the left party does not make you a centrist. If a person is practically a Republican he is a right wing person. I have no problem with him being a conservative Democrat, but stop calling him a centrist!

Argh -- I just noticed this codswallop from the quoted articke: "Centrist Sen. Ben Nelson."

"Centrist," my eye. He's conservative, and as usual the so-called "liberal media" pushes the Overton window with a bulldozer by misrepresenting the fact.

hey, Ben. If you know any states which don't want money like Texas or South Carolina send it to Arizona, preferably Southern Arizona.

God knows we need the money. Our school budgets are crumbling, kids cannot buy books, our hispanic programs are under attack from the Superintendent of Public Instruction (who is running for Attorney general) our university tuition has tripled to $8,000 a year.

in fact to raise money jaywalking tickets in Tucson have been raised to cost $160, vigorous enforcement paid for by a grant from Az Gov Jan Brewer's office. ( illegal aliens have dropped off her radar.)

so you may be bent on turning nebraska into a 3rd world country but The rest of us do not want our states to go in that direction,

Wonder where he stands on the letting the Bush tax cuts expire...the largest part ot the deficit and unpaid for to boot.

Look, I know the federal government's supposed to deficit spend during recessions. You know that too. If anyone has notified the Democratic leadership or the national press (aside from Krugman) I'd be glad to hear it.

Nebraska has low unemployment. Ben Nelson couldn't care less about the rest of the country. All he cares about is Ben Nelson and, necessarily, Nebraska.

Ben Nelson to America: "Up yours."

Blue Dogs should be referred to as the Republican Wing of the Democratic Party.

Do states EVER give money back to the Federal Gov't?

And let's not forget that this piece of Nebraska pig shit was the tie breaking vote for the infamous Bush tax cuts for the rich that added 400 billion to the deficit. Principles indeed.

Seems like we are going to have a great season regarding bird watching this year, tons of things about currently and also it really is still early on. Anybody have any kind of notion the reason this is? I'd personally have thought that the cold would have made it worse for them.
