IT'S NOT JUST THE PARENT COMPANY.... News Corp's $1 million contribution to the Republican Governors Association has generated a fair amount of attention, not on Fox News, which refuses to report on the story, but at most major outlets. There is a defense that Fox News can point to, however: News Corp is the corporate parent, so it's not the network's fault.

Michael Wolff reports today, however, that this unpersuasive argument isn't true. Rupert Murdoch isn't usually inclined to give $1 million to politicians, and according to Wolff, the massive contribution came not from Murdoch but from Roger Ailes -- the Republican campaign veteran who runs Fox News.

The company is claiming the donation has nothing to do with its news side, going so far as to audaciously say, "There is a strict wall between business and editorial." The "corporate side" made the donation, News Corp.'s hapless spokesman insists. But the central advocate for giving the dough has been none other than Fox Chief Roger Ailes. In the past, Ailes has been stymied or neutralized in his quest to have the company put its corporate money where its mouth is, because the No. 2 in the company until last summer, Peter Chernin, was a Democrat.

With Chernin gone, and with Fox News outperforming most other parts of the company, Ailes is the central voice... It really isn't possible that Murdoch is giving a million bucks and getting nothing for it.

Indeed, it's equally implausible that Murdoch's operation would care about gubernatorial races enough to give the Republican Governors Association a contribution with no modern precedent. The House and Senate, maybe. But governors? Republicans care about gubernatorial races, in large part because of post-Census redistricting, but News Corp's interest doesn't really make sense.

Roger Ailes' interest, however, makes perfect sense.

As for Fox News' defense, the Republican network is sticking to its usual m.o. For years, when Fox News faces criticism, it lashes out at its detractors, mirroring the kind of tactics one might see from a rapid-response team on a Republican campaign. Facing allegations stemming from the $1 million donation to the RGA, we're seeing the usual tactics once again.

Well, this is a gift that we'll remember for a long time. Thanks, Roger, for removing the last veil separating the RNC from the Fox. Something to tell your wingnut uncle at the next family gathering!

Except, of course, for the so-called "liberal media" taking up the talking points. Oh, wait...

Interesting, but I have trouble believing that anyone in NewsCorp pushes Murdoch around. I can, however, believe that a rumor might just be pushed to the media in order to shift the blame from Murdoch onto Ailes.

I would love to see this play out on Fox News had, for example, Keith Olbermann went on air to claim that a $1M campaign contribution from MSNBC to the DNC was only from the 'corporate' side.

There wouldn't be enough Glenn Beck tears, O'Reilly indignation, Palin satelitte video feeds, and on-screen scrolling graphic space to accomodate the freak out.

It makes no sense? Of course it does. Do you really think a Republican Senator or Representative is going to be elected President anytime soon? And what political office did most Presidents hold prior to being elected? Governor!!

PC: On large piles of money with many beautiful ladies.

what an asshole.

Lashing out at detractors was last year. Now what they do at FOX News is pump their fists and chant "We're number one! We're number one!" They have convinced their followers that, by virtue of having the highest ratings of any "news" network, they are somehow on the side of what is "right."

Of course, the low-info and the high-dementia voters fall right into their laps. To them, a million dollars spent on Republicans is just that sweet network doing God's will.

Who knew all those mind control experiments of the 50s and 60s would actually pay dividends?

Coupla things:
1. Is there anyone that didn't know about this relationship between the two groups before? It's kind of like your gay friend who has been in the closet for years, suddenly telling you he's gay, AND expecting you to be surprised.

2. Are the middle 10% of the voting electorate going to change their mind because of this? No. They're not paying attention to this, and they watch FOX news anyways, who didn't report on it.

3. Is this going to change the tactics of Hannity/Beck/O'Reilly from there their witch hunt on progressives like Van Jones et al. "Chasing the money!" No. They were hippocrits before and they knew it, and they are still hippocrits and still know it.

This sh*t just pisses me off.

Jon Stewart weighed in on this (mocking Beck once again) last night:

Stewart did a great job on Dick Armey the other night, too (esp in part 3). So sorry it wasn't all on the air.

Since News Corp is 25% owned by the Saudis, doesn't that mean that 25% of the $1,000,000 would therefore be from that source? Seems like it to me.
The GOP should explain how they can take money not only from Fox but also from a foreign country.
Are they willing and able to be fair and balanced when these huge amounts of money come into play?

Posted by: Dianen on August 19, 2010 at 2:07 PM | PERMALINK

Interesting, but I have trouble believing that anyone in NewsCorp pushes Murdoch around.

I don't. Have you ever seen an interview with Murdoch? Or read his history?

The man has almost zero political sense. He has an ideology that is based on two things - making as much money as possible, and sucking up to the powerful as much as he can. Beyond that he's a waste. If Ailes convinced him that throwing News Corp money behind the GOP was good for either making more money for News Corp or for sucking up to the powerful, he'd do it in a heartbeat.

Murdoch is a clever man but he's not very principled, nor is he really all that smart. He's business smart, but not well-rounded smart. He probably didn't even realize that this would potentially blow up in his face.

When are the other MSM networks going to call Fox on this and not just mention it in passing. Talk about threats to the First Amendment.

Posted by: hornblower on August 19, 2010 at 2:20 PM | PERMALINK

@ Dianen, 2;07PM,
a) I'm sure Fux Corp will say that the Saudi money is kept in a different pocket than the American money is.
And I'm sure that, b) theAmericanist (see the "thread" on Dean/Cordoba House) will demand that the Fux Corp refuse to be funded, in any way, by the Saudis. Also, too.

Posted by: exlibra on August 19, 2010 at 2:41 PM | PERMALINK

Keep in mind: the passionate love affair between Murdoch and Prince Alalweed bin Talal goes both ways - the Prince is the 2nd largest shareholder of Fox, and NewsCorp owns a large stake of bin Talal's media conglomerate.

Just as digby always says 'Saudi owned Fox News', we should probably always say: 'The Saudi funded Republican party'.

All Fox not just Fox News. It is indeed the Fox in the Hen House.

WE DON'T WATCH FOX, bumper stickers available soon. As soon as I figure out how to print them on my printer.

FOX is full of whack. They think that they are so smart. Well, more and more of the USA is going to see what motherfuckers these folks are. Anyone who pays a cool million to politicians, political committees, or referendums and claims to be a fair and balanced organization, should be watched pretty closely. If they purport to be a "fair and balanced" news organization and are actually a political arm of a political party, they should have their license as a news organization lifted.

Damn, here I was looking to buy half a dozen jerseys, three or four pairs of shoes, and a full dozen purses.
Guess I need to shop elsewhere.
And I thought these people were supposed to be smart? Guess that's just another of those stereotypes with no basis in reality. Good to know.
