DEPARTMENT OF POTS AND KETTLES.... Back in April, CNN Rick Sanchez had an unfortunate moment on the air in which he said Iceland is "too cold to have a volcano." He may have been kidding -- it's hard to tell -- but it obviously wasn't one of Sanchez's best moments.

Yesterday, deranged media personality Glenn Beck aired the months-old clip of Sanchez's mistake, using it as evidence to argue that Sanchez is "the dumbest man ever on television."

For the record, Sanchez generally isn't my cup of tea, and his volcano joke was pretty foolish, so I'm not inclined to offer much of a defense. But for Glenn Beck to describe anyone on television as dumb is just astounding. It's the equivalent of Sarah Palin accusing someone of being ignorant. Or Mark Kirk* accusing someone of exaggerating their personal background. Or David Vitter accusing someone of lacking character and integrity. Or Sharron Angle accusing someone of being a lunatic.

George Zornick highlights a few of Beck's greatest hits.

* Beck reveals that President Obama is an "oligarh"

* Beck also misspells "heroes" and "villains" live on-air.

* Beck plays Connect Four against himself, and cheats.

* Beck displayed a graphic demonstrating that Silas from "The Da Vinci Code" is a member of ACORN.

Beck said of Sanchez, "I honestly don't know how the man ties his own shoes." If I had a nickel for every time I've had the same thought about Beck, I could retire wealthy.

* fixed

Compared to Beck, Rick Sanchez is another ___. Insert your favorite genius; it works no matter who you pick.

"Or Mark Foley accusing someone of exaggerating their personal background."

I think you mean Mark Kirk. Mark Foley would be accusing someone of being overly interested in underage congressional pages.

Curious. Are we just re-visiting the Crichton/Crowley cat fight?

Steve,

I love your blog, read and learn from it all the time, totally on board as a fellow atheist who doesn't understand the fundies need to ruin everything by imposing their religion, etc. but I gotta say, if you are spending so much time thinking about Glenn Beck's feet, then I worry about you. It takes a lot of nickels to retire wealthy.

Just sayin'

In fairness to Beck, the competition between him and Sanchez for "stupidest man on television" is a ding-dong donnybrook headed for octuple overtime. They're both morons.

I don't get the point of this blog article. Are you, Steve, trying to prove something we already know? Its only relevance would be if the other networks actually made an issue of the ignorance or hypocrisy of Glenn Beck, or any other cable "news" personality. The absolute failure of Corporate News organizations to expose the lies and exaggerations of their brethren is at the core of the ignorance of a large proportion of the "citizenry," as Sharron Angle would refer. That over 20% and growing of those polled still believe that Obama is a Muslim and not a Christian is a direct result of the misinformation that daily comes over the airwaves. Of course, the larger issue is: who cares what religion the POTUS professes, as long as it is not one that calls for the death and destruction of people and their property. As some of us have observed, there are some (not all)Christians who have, in fact, publicly called for prayers to end Obama's life or success. I, personally, have grave concerns about anyone who professes to be a Christian and born again. To me they are as dangerous as the fundamentalist Muslims and Taliban when calling for the demise of Islam.

It is not the religion that is dangerous; it is the religionists whose rigidity prevents their application of critical thinking to any subject that comes up.

When the public airwaves begin serving the greater welfare of the society, then I will consider watching. At this point, the only time I visit TV news is to see what lies they are parroting.

There is a necessary part of every job that is the least attractive . Recalling the details is the best way to understand how to avoid the charms of having them take over the government .

Don't pass judgement on those unable to tie their own shoes. W has worn nothing but slip-ons since he left the Whitehouse.

Ian is right and st john makes good points too.

You, Mr Benen, are letting the trivia and distractions run you.

Rather than spending your time (and Olbermann's and Maddow's) hand-wringing about "Doctor" Laura, the "ground zero" mosque, Obama's certificate of live birth, or any of the myriad of stupidities, not the least of which is Mr Beck himself, you SHOULD be uncovering the many real and substantial crimes and malfeasances of our dear Republican friends. Not that you don't, of course - it's that you should dispense mostly with the rest.

All this stuff is the sideshow, the shiny sparkly things to draw our eyes away from the real meat. While vowing to never again (hmmm - that may be a trademarked phrase) stand aloof and let the rightwingers hit at us, like the dignified Gore and Kerry did, lefties appear to be going overboard and grabbing at all the pretty flashing lights of inconsequential GOP foibles. While the real stuff gets under-addressed.

I mean, REALLY - the whole "Doctor" Laura thing is irrelevant. Woman states that she will her contract run out in several months. So what if she claims that this means she's being "silenced" or that the first amendment no longer exists for her? It's a laugh line - not two-three days on the big Maddow/Olbermann/Tweetie all-nite librul lineup.

So Glen Beck is stupid (like a fox - if you're so smart, Mr. Benen, why ain'tcha rich?) It's a one liner. Doesn't rate a post.

Keep hitting on the real deals - the sweetheart Abramoff-type things, the hypocrisies, the deliberate malicious obstructions, etc. Let the fluff balls go.

Beck doesn't tie his own shoes. He's wealthy enough to have someone do that for him.

Spelling errors?

Beck has said enough ignorant things about history alone to fill a volume. Why are we going after spelling errors?

Posted by: John McKay on August 20, 2010 at 7:00 PM | PERMALINK

Have we all read Beck's family history? and I am sure that is the cleaned up version, his early life? his family? how about his education?
Just read it and you get a lot of insight into this - I have to say 'unfortunate person'

I for one appreciate what Steve does, and how he selects his posts. Surely he is prolific enough to be able to cover the fluff as well as the substance; and he gives me a nice aggregate of the crazy so I don't have to waste my precious mind on it myself.

If you don't like it, as Atrios says, feel free to start your own blog.

I am a bit surprised to find that it is already 8AM Eastern on a Saturday and Steve doesn't already have several posts up. Slacker.
