WEDNESDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Coordinated attacks in 13 Iraqi towns and cities kill dozens: "Insurgents unleashed a wave of coordinated attacks across Iraq on Wednesday in a demonstration of their ability to strike at will."

* Really not good: "Sales of U.S. new homes unexpectedly dropped in July to the lowest level on record, signaling that even with cheaper prices and reduced borrowing costs the housing market is retreating."

* Really not good, Part II: "New orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods excluding transportation equipment posted their largest decline in 1-1/2 years in July while overall booking rose far less than expected, pointing to a slowdown in manufacturing."

* Relief trickles in for victims of Pakistan flooding.

* The anti-Muslim stabbing of a New York City cabdriver is so shocking, and the details about the alleged attacker so bizarre, one hardly knows where to start.

* President Obama will visit Fort Bliss, Tex., on Tuesday to meet with U.S. troops returning from Iraq. That night, he'll deliver an Oval Office address about the end of combat operations in the country.

* Yemen remains a focus of serious attention: "For the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, CIA analysts see one of al-Qaeda's offshoots -- rather than the core group now based in Pakistan -- as the most urgent threat to U.S. security, officials said."

* Alan Simpson, the co-chair of President Obama's Fiscal Responsibility Commission, apologizes for his ridiculous email this week. Paul Krugman isn't persuaded.

* Republicans made dire predictions about the Obama administration's drilling moratorium. As is often the case, they were wrong.

* A Korean cult leader, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, apparently wants the conservative Washington Times back.

* Congrats to Nate Silver and his team on FiveThirtyEight's transition to the New York Times.

* Daniel Luzer: "The recession has caused parents to save more for college, though apparently it's not working out so well."

* Former half-term Gov. Sarah Palin (R) believes political figures who use the word "retarded" in a private meeting should be fired. She also believes political figures who use the "N-word" on national broadcasts should be protected. I wonder why that is.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Interesting take from Alaska political blogger, Jeanne Devon, on what happened there last night.

What economic forecaster was 'surprised' by either the housing or manufacturing numbers? And why are they still being listened to by anyone?

With the official unemployment rate at 10% and the real rate being closer to 20% the only 'surprise' is that the numbers aren't lower.

really, steve, other commenters today have it right. Post more DOODIE and less crap about palin.

The doodie animations featuring excrement are a productive way to use feces.

Your endless nattering about palin is an unproductive use of feces.

It is so adorable how puerile posters feel so very proud and rewarded to leave their droppings .

Calling Sarah Palin retarded is an insult to retarded people.

The idea ...
Imagining that the ponzi plutocrat will spare the insane tea bag fulminate is so loaded good side splitting contradictory principles , that I laugh .

it's because Palin has never really met any black people. I'd bet Ive slept with more black men than she has shaken hands with

When I was but a stripling, to start the flivver our chauffeur had to RETARD the spark.

How times have changed; today on NPR I heard about a man who was "intellectually disabled." One wonders if he suffered a head injury in Iraq, lost his copy of Kant, or was simply a retard. . .

"Sales of U.S. new homes unexpectedly dropped in July to the lowest level on record, signaling that even with cheaper prices and reduced borrowing costs the housing market is retreating."

There's that word again. "Unexpectedly." Really? Was it unexpected? At this point any house gains should be classified as "unexpected" because the housing market has been the crapper for years now.

Agreed with a couple of posters, above. Anyone paying attention is not "surprised" by the angle of decline in property values, sales of new and "used" homes, increase in real unemployment and "Consumer" purchases of non-essential goods and services. Even the purchase of "essentials" is in decline. Have you been to a strip mall or other commercial business park, lately?

Too bad we are living in denial. When will we ever learn? Between the mentally retarded media and the dumbed down educational system, we continue down this road to radical transformation. We will survive, just not in a way that many envision. Hope is a town in Arkansas, but not one I'd like to live in.

Blessings,
st john

Time to marshall the forces in e-mail, calls, blogs, etc to those in the "professional left" and "liberal press" and suggest they put out the word that people IGNORE Beck's "look at me" this weekend...I mean don't listen, don't go, don't resond, don't report...that is what will drive him the most NUTS! This man is hoping for and pushing for an incident and the focus of the MSM on his little get together...I say...DO NOT LOOK...nothing happening over there...and NOT A WORD about it after the fact...but will our corporate media be able to resist the pull of "ratings" (if we don't report it others will)? Of course not...still the potential danger for some nut on the left (yeah we have them too) to pull something stupid and feed this creep something to rant on about is very viable...so get the word out...STOP the reporting on him...MOVE ON...

Would appear that those in Iraq will continue with the destructive bombings,
and endlessly destory their own way of life. Beyond comprehension, all these years.
Time for the USA to get out of there, as this murderous tendency
shall likely persist.
I am tired of the explosions and say getthehellouttathereNOW

Sarah Palin deserves no further attention. Her proverbial fifteen minutes of fame have come and gone. Katie Couric exposed Palin as a vacant soul, an empty cup, and as Palin remained in the limelight, she became a pathetic tool of the right wing. She would lie on even minor things, to no avail. A mismatch of craziness, a grifter seeking money from fools of the right wing.
She and Todd must laugh a lot about what they accomplished. What an embarrassment of family values gone wild. As she ages, with that ridiculous bag lady hair, it is even more pathetic.
