FRIDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Terror in Pakistan: "A suicide bombing at a Shiite demonstration in the western Pakistani city of Quetta left at least 55 people dead Friday, triggering fears of an outbreak of sectarian violence as the nation continues to struggle with ruinous floods. The strike followed a suicide attack that killed at least two people in northwest Pakistan at a mosque of the Ahmedi sect, another religious minority whose members are the frequent victims of Islamist extremists. On Wednesday, suicide bombers struck a Shiite march in the city of Lahore, killing at least 30 and sparking riots."

* Hurricane Earl swipes North Carolina, heads towards New England a little worse for wear. Early reports suggest damage in North Carolina was not as bad as feared.

* Earthquake in New Zealand: "Authorities said Saturday that a major earthquake near New Zealand's second-largest city, Christchurch, caused extensive damage and scores of minor injuries but no major casualties."

* President Obama addressed the monthly jobs report at a press availability this morning, and before wrapping up, mentioned, "I will be addressing a broader package of ideas next week."

* Why is long-term unemployment declining?

* I was going to say "nice try," but it wasn't even that: "A judge on Thursday denied a request for President Barack Obama to testify at a court martial for a U.S. Army flight surgeon who refused to deploy to Afghanistan until he saw proof that Obama was born in the United States."

* Former OMB Director Peter Orszag is getting a New York Times column. It should be interesting.

* Daniel Luzer: Paying for college with retirement money.

* The NRCC embezzlement scandal leads to a guilty plea.

* Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), currently the subject of criminal and ethics investigations stemming from his sex/corruption scandal, told constituents this week, "If you don't hold us accountable, we'll do some real bad things in Washington, D.C." He was trying to talk about the economy, but I nevertheless found his lack of self-awareness hilarious.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

"Why is long-term unemployment declining?"

Because they are dropping out of the national workforce.

I actually find it funny that Vitter did so well in his primary. It shows that the voters in NV are really STUPID. It will be nice when he finally goes to jail though.

More than fifteen people were killed near our border with Mexico today, whose fault is the Mexican Drug War, it's ours of course!

They could pass something utilizing reconciliation, just as they should have done with healthcare. If they rescind tax cuts for the Rich & Corporate or eliminate Corporate Welfare along with a jobs/stimulus package, there will still be a net reduction in the federal deficit, thereby qualifying for reconciliation.

Speaker Pelosi Slams Senate Republicans For Letting Jobs-Creation Program Expire

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slammed Senate Republicans Thursday for failing to reauthorize funding for a subsidized jobs program that has created 240,000 jobs in 37 states. The federal wage subsidy will expire Sept. 30 unless Congress extends the program by ponying up another $2.5 billion.

"It's been as positive an initiative for job creation as you can make," Pelosi told reporters after a speech at San Francisco State University Thursday. "Unfortunately -- you'll hear me say this many times -- we have passed it over and over again in the House, waiting for some action from the Senate."

The Emergency Fund was created by the stimulus to assist states with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families programs. A House approved bill that would have reauthorized the funds was shot down in May with Senate Republicans citing deficit concerns.

Pelosi said that unless Congress extends the funds, national unemployment will rise, and she noted that 3,500 people in her hometown of San Francisco will lose their jobs. In Los Angeles, where the program is especially large, as many as 10,000 jobs are on the line. And in the state of Illinois, 20,000 jobs could be at stake.

The bill "has an immediate impact on job creation -- private sector jobs creation and nonprofit sector jobs creation" Pelosi said, adding that many of the business owners she's met with have lauded the program, saying and that when the economy turns around they want to keep the new, subsidized hires on at our own expense.

People really need to google their subjects before they become snarky, especially when they attribute stupidity to another group.

In fairness to mishanti, it is hard to keep track of all the scandal-ridden Republican pols.

We all prefer to work "from the heart" and each of us comes to different personal decisions about how to react, when that's impossible. Here's an excellent posting about working "from the head" and what led to it. I found her systematic tracking and documenting the options inspiring:

Hmmmm.

Well, Nevada GOP voters did pick Sharron Angle, thus making Harry Reid the luckiest SOB on the face of the earth....

I didn't realize that Pakistan had a similar Sunni/Shia tension as to Iraq. Never "the same" of course but still troubling. Do the sects really despise each other that much or is it mostly a proxy for other stuff like power/economics and who cooperates with whom, etc?

Rabbit: the LSM don't even try.

BTW, interesting report on CNN (the new Faux-lite?) this afternoon: 47% think Obama *isn't* doing his job / keeping his promises etc. Now maybe there's some "don't knows" in there, but isn't it funny they didn't pose it as "[

Joe Friday (anyone), what do those who "drop out of the work force" live on? Some obvious answers, but I hear about people out of work for years and somehow still in houses etc, maybe relatives who knows.

Dwight, it's a close race. You are too charitable about voters in this nation today. Maybe send Harry some help, dorky as he is (and not as bad as the caricature.)

Neil,

Harry Reid has a warchest of over $19 million, which is more than 6x the size of Angle's. If he loses, it won’t be for a lack of money. Whatever donations I could make to senate races this year would go to Giannoulias here in Illinois, or maybe even Sestak in PA.

And yes, Reid is by no means a safe bet in November. But less than a year ago, he had approval ratings in the low 30's, which were lower than even fellow Nevadan Johnny “Is your wife hot, my parents have money” Ensign. And he was trailing unnamed Republicans in generic polls by more than 10 points.

And then Nevada Republicans go on to nominate Sharron Angle.

If that doesn't meet any acceptable definition of the word "lucky", I don't know what does.

I don't think Reid is a "dork". My problem with him is that back when he was picked as majority leader (remember, at that time, Democrats didn't have a presidential nominee yet; Harry Reid, as the highest-ranking elected official, was the de facto face of the party), we were told that what Reid lacked in charisma and PR skills , he would more than make-up for as a master parliamentarian who could get things done behind the scenes.

I haven’t been too impressed with his legislative skills, even after factoring-in the bat-shit craziness of his colleagues across the aisle . Have you?

The Grand Old Party of Bush brought us this economic calamity.  The Party of Bush brought us the Wall Street meltdown and bailout. Right now the Party of Bush is steering us to an even bigger ditch called Depression. They figure that more American misery will help them at the polls; our nation be damned.

Don't let the GOP bring back the Bush agenda. We can't afford to turn the Bush Recession into the Bush Depression.
