A COUPLE OF REMARKABLE COINCIDENCES.... When deranged media personality Glenn Beck organized a rally at the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech," he initially said the timing was coincidental. Participants' schedules just happened to work out for Aug. 28, Beck argued, though he later said the twist of fate was "divine providence."

Less than a month later, Beck and former half-term Gov. Sarah Palin are teaming up once again, this time for a 9/11 event in Alaska. Right-wing activists can buy tickets priced between $73 and $130 -- a bonus "meet & greet" costs $225 a pop -- to help Beck and Palin exploit the anniversary of a devastating terrorist attack.

And once again, wouldn't you know it, the date just happens to be another coincidence.

The show originally featured only Beck, a popular Fox News Channel personality, according to Christopher Cox, the Anchorage-based promoter of the event. Cox later thought of adding the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, and she agreed to it, he said.

Cox said the date of the event is a coincidence. Cox originally was eyeing Sept. 4, but did not want to compete with the Alaska State Fair, and moved the date to a week later, which worked out better for Beck as well.

That's believable, right? Beck and Palin aren't cashing in on the deaths of 3,000 Americans; they're just holding an event. It's not their fault that Sept. 11 just happens to be a convenient date on the calendar for them.

Of course, that might be slightly more credible if Palin hadn't told her followers, "I can think of no better way to commemorate 9/11 than to gather with patriots who will 'never forget.'"

Remember, though, it's just a coincidence.

Simon Maloy added, "But that's all just a scheduling quirk. I mean, Glenn Beck would never use 9-11 as a publicity tool to further his own ambitions, right? Okay, well maybe there was that one time... and that other time... and all the other times too. But this one really is a coincidence. Honest."

"Just a coincidence." And chickens need dental floss.

Who ever talks about what day the terrorists struck?

Not their fault they didn't check Wikipedia before scheduling.

Someone mentioned having it on 9/11 and it just didn't ring a bell.

It's amazing how people like Beck always pop up with crazy antic to keep everyone focused on him. The media and everyone talks about him and what he says, and who and what he is blaming for all our ills.

It's also very interesting how this kind of dynamic keeps the spotlight off what is really the cause of all our ills: Wall Street greed, corporate influence of politicians, and creeping authoritarianism - not only their efforts to escape responsibility for what they have done and continue to do, but also their efforts to ensure that nothing stops them from keeping on doing it.

Republicans have always been unfortunate victims of these twists of fate.

Dick Cheney's orange alerts almost always struck just a few weeks before elections and right after an embarrassing scandal in the Bush administration was revealed.

Dumb luck!

There was a pantload of orange alerts.

I too am planning an "event". A protest, if you will. Or maybe it will be a celebration. A commemoration- with lots of T shirts and tasteful souvenirs for sale.

I will nail two timbers together, stick it in the ground. Surround it with a pile of Gideon Bibles that Rocky Raccoon and I have acquired over the years.

Gonna set them on fire, sometime next year. In April, maybe. April 6th, 2012. I checked my calendar; it's on a Friday. I'm announcing it now, before something else gets scheduled for that date.

There can no longer be any whisper of a doubt that the Palin / Beck juggernauts are pure entertainment ala Jerry Springer.

Why don't Palin and Beck just cut the pretense and camp out at Ground Zero on 9/11 to hock their books?

Posted by: Ted Frier on September 10, 2010 at 9:08 AM | PERMALINK

Wow, so Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin admit that they have forgotten 9/11 by claiming that selecting the date was a "coincidence".

There's no way I'm paying. Unless, of course, they're going to burn a few Korans.

How dare you insinuate that today's two greatest leaders guiding America out of (ahem) the darkness are just peddling tickets in mockery of fallen Americans. I'm glad I don't embrace such a cynical world view.

Palin and Beck have an interesting tendency to contradict one another - on 8/27/2010, before the Beckapalooza, Beck said "We are 12 hours away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America"

The following day, Palin, onstage, slamming President Obama, said "I must assume that you too, knowing that, no, we must not fundamentally transform America as some would want, we must restore America and restore her honor."

Then there was the time Beck insulted Palin on his show, saying she talked too much and ought to stay in the kitchen.

Beck -- Still the rodeo clown.

Between sociopaths whats a little oblivion . They are unaware in any meaningful way of what passes for the nuts and bolts of existence , so a contradiction .

If anybody is perfect then they may criticise the timeless duo , otherwise just enjoy the glow of heavenly stuff on earth .

I'm confused. The right wing is angry that President Obama is going to be at the Pentagon, rather than the World Trade Center site on 9/11. But their heroes, Palin and Beck, are going to be in Alaska for an event that costs $73 to $225 to attend???? Did the "liberal" media fail to tell us that Alaska was also attacked on 9/11?

For a couple of such great Patriots, it's surprising that they would treat the day like any other, that when they were arranging their calendar they wouldn't stop and think, "Oh, no, we wouldn't want to be seen politicizing or profiting from remembrance of such a horrific event."

Oh, that's right. We're talking about Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin.

Democrat U.S. Senate candidate in Ohio, Lee Fisher is holding a POLITICAL FUNDRAISER on September 11th. And Sarah Palin is NOT getting any kind of speaking fee for the event contrary to what Soros-funded front groups like Stink Progress and Media Matters say.

There were citizens from over 50 different nations who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. It is inaccurate to imply that the deaths were all Americans.

"Palin has often stated that the strokes of luck propelling her political success were divinely ordained: “There are no coincidences” is a favorite maxim."

The No Coincidences is a favorite line of Christian Reconstructionists. Why isn't anyone doing a Daily Show style split screen to ask about this giant and very public contridiction.
Everything is Providence to these crazy Calvinists.

Palin hadn't told her followers, "I can think of no better way to commemorate 9/11 than to gather with suckers who have $225 to spend.

There, fixed it.

Kevin H;

Where is the money going that is being raised at the gate for the geek show?

Is Murdoch paying his entertainers for going?

Will they return together to commemorate the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake that punished Alaskans for their dangerous decision to become a state?

Posted by: MacMan on September 10, 2010 at 11:54 AM | PERMALINK

When someone asked Democrat Fisher's campaign about the even being moved from 9/11 they shrugged it off entirely. Media Matters is just on a whiny, pathetic crusade against Fox News, it reaches the depths of being a stalker-like obsession, like the person ranting about their ex-gf or ex-bf years after the break-up when most people are tired of it.

Posted by: Kevin on September 10, 2010 at 11:57 AM | PERMALINK

That Beck even called his rally "Restore Honor ..." - to imply the nation doesn't have honor now, of course. Well, could it have been taken away by GW Bush and crew, but of course Beck would never make note of such associations.

Kevin - Fauz if a major force distorting and debasing our political discourse, it does indeed warrant "stalking" and it's every move being watched and noted.

"Cox originally was eyeing Sept. 4, but did not want to compete with the Alaska State Fair,.."

Seriously, the state fair? People couldn't do both? Or is Alaska the only state where the fair is a one day event?

And why do Beck and Palin hold the Alaska State Fair in higher esteem than the anniversary of 9/11?

Casualties of the attacks on the WTC

FYI: Of the approx. 3,000 people who died on 911 in the WTC, more than 90 countries lost citizens in the attacks with 310 foreign nationals, EXCLUDING the 19 hijackers.

I think we do all of the people who died, Americans and those from other countries and their families, a disservice when we continue to ignore the fact that not everyone was an American.

Acknowledging this does not diminish the lost of the thousands of Americans.

Bush routinely skipped 9-11 memorials at Ground Zero. President Bush routinely did not attend 9-11 memorial services at the World Trade Center. On the first anniversary of 9-11, Bush visited New York and addressed the nation. On the second anniversary, Bush addressed the nation from St. John's Church in Washington, D.C., while Vice President Dick Cheney represented the president in New York. On the third anniversary, Bush addressed the nation via radio from the Oval Office. On the fourth anniversary, the president, first lady, vice president, and Mrs. Cheney observed a moment of silence on the South Lawn of the White House. On the fifth anniversary, Bush visited ground zero on September 10, but instead of attending the memorial in New York on September 11, he addressed the nation from the Oval Office. In 2007 -- the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks -- Bush reportedly "paused for a moment of silence outside the White House," and in 2008, Bush attended the dedication of a 9-11 Pentagon Memorial.
