GETTING TO KNOW HER; GETTING TO KNOW ALL ABOUT HER.... There was a point, immediately after Sharron Angle's Republican Senate primary win in Nevada, when objective observers would say, "She seems pretty crazy." And then some more information about her would come to light, leading observers to say, "Wow, she really is crazy." And then we'd hear about her suggesting armed insurrection against the United States, leading observers to say, "Good lord, she's cover-your-eyes crazy."

Prepare for a similar series of events in light of yesterday's contest in Delaware.

Going into yesterday's Republican Senate primary, Christine O'Donnell was considered just a kook who kept embarrassing herself, running unsuccessfully for statewide office. Ed Kilgore offered this description:

O'Donnell is a recent newcomer to Delaware and, since arriving, has managed to get into trouble with her student loans, her taxes, her mortgage, and her job. She also unsuccessfully sued a conservative organization for gender discrimination. In general, she's the kind of person whom you'd expect Tea Party activists to excoriate for irresponsibility, not promote as a candidate for high office. But yesterday she beat Castle handily, becoming yet another exhibit of the extraordinary extent to which ideology has trumped every other factor in the 2010 Republican primary season.

But just as Angle's madness came into sharper focus with additional information, the closer one looks at O'Donnell, the more detached from reality she appears.

The story that's getting a fair amount of attention today is O'Donnell's anti-masturbation campaign. But that's really just the beginning. For example, she not only rejects modern biology, O'Donnell believes there's "just as much, if not more, evidence supporting" creationism over evolution.

She's also argued against coed college dorms, insisting that they could lead to "orgy rooms" and "menage a trois rooms."

Politically, O'Donnell has told Fox News that President Obama "is so liberal that he's anti-American." She's also fought against AIDS funding and insisted the condoms wouldn't stop the disease from spreading.

More recently, her campaign manager explained, "This is her third Senate race in five years. As O'Donnell's manager, I found out she was living on campaign donations -- using them for rent and personal expenses, while leaving her workers unpaid and piling up thousands in debt."

O'Donnell also appears to be a little paranoid, telling the Weekly Standard that she regularly checks the bushes and cars around her townhouse because some unknown people "follow me home at night."

In the competition for craziest Senate candidate of 2010, there are some strong contenders -- Angle, Paul, Buck, Miller, Toomey, Johnson -- but O'Donnell has to rank near the top.

You know, for a virgin, O'Donnell sure does seem to know a lot.

The scary thought is the possibility that, even in the general election, being a kook will not disqualify someone from being elected.

Posted by: Daryl McCullough on September 15, 2010 at 3:33 PM | PERMALINK

And Paul enjoys a sizeable lead, Angle is tied or slightly ahead or behind Reid, I have not seen anything on Miller, but I bet he is ahead and while O'Donnell is way back, so was McMahon and she is now within striking distance in Conneticut. In difficult times you need leaders to steer the ship of state and in a vacuum, the crazies fill the void. Scary times indeed.

I wonder if the people she thinks are following her home are just former campaign workers still trying to get their paychecks?

She's got nice hair tho...

"'orgy rooms' and 'menage a trois rooms.'"

Remember: the orgy room and the menage a trois room are to be kept separate. Anyone caught having a menage a trois in the orgy room or an orgy in the menage a trois room will have their orgy room privileges revoked.

In general, she's the kind of person whom you'd expect Tea Party activists to excoriate for irresponsibility, not promote as a candidate for high office.

So is Sarah Palin, except she's not black.

Two generations of out-of-wedlock conceptions are OK if you're white trash. Then, it's a reflection of your family values.

Or something.

If my college had "orgy rooms" or "menage a trois" rooms, I would not have dropped out.

Posted by: Masturbation Addict on September 15, 2010 at 3:45 PM | PERMALINK

Sweet! Palin is now taking shots at Rove.

The GOP certainly has their share of mutants, freaks and, apparently now, virgins (part of the freak contingent) running for the Senate. However, what Dem strategists have to do is make Carl Paladino the face of the GOP. He has no chance to win, but is such a knuckle dragging bigot that the Dems have to burn his inmage into the mind of the indy voters. Literally scare the crap out of them. Even if the GOP has a short term political gain in Nov, with these people being the face of the GOP going into 2012 will mean a royal trouncing for a party that richly deserves it.

She's also argued against coed college dorms, insisting that they could lead to "orgy rooms" and "menage a trois rooms."

-and how is that bad thing?

Yeah, she's a loon, but I bet her fantasies are top drawer!

You know, I've come to the conclusion that Rand Paul isn't crazy. He's stupid. He's decided that outcome he wants: government will neither tax him nor in any way burden or inconvenience him. He then creates an ideology to support that end view. It's not crazy, it's just how most people fail at logic. He's started from a selected outcome, and is unwilling to let anything get in the way of that outcome. And he's willing to lie to people to get them to accept that his outcome is good and that any evidence that suggests that it would be awful is simply wrong.

However, this lady, she's flat out nuts.

I wonder if she will charge her opponent (Coons) with masturbation.

Posted by: Bob M on September 15, 2010 at 3:59 PM | PERMALINK

I feel sorry for Michelle Bachmann. Putting in years to be considered a real nut, and just when it was starting to pay off all these upstarts swoop in and steal her thunder...

This Shit writes itself Jon Stewart just got a freebee. Next up : John Oliver and Wyatt Senack with their shirts labeled Crazy or Stupid

Posted by: johnR on September 15, 2010 at 4:02 PM | PERMALINK

I didn't know Carrie's mother was running for the Senate.

The masturbation thing will kill her. There's just no overcoming somethings. It's her Michael Dukakis tank moment, her barter for medical care with chickens.

All I want to know is why someone who has such an obviously rich sexual fantasy life is not married, @41. She should be raising a family, imbuing her children with the right values. Yet here she is, mouthing off nonsense in her little-girl voice. What's wrong with her? When Palin was her age, she already had 4 kids...

Posted by: exlibra on September 15, 2010 at 4:03 PM | PERMALINK

It's an interesting dynamic; attacking sex while playing up your own sex appeal.

Let's face it . . . without masturbation, O'Donnell's (and Palin's) appeal to conservative male voters drops appreciably.

Dwight, you beat me to it.

[snick!]

And Dwight in with the winner. Nice one!

Now that she's secured the nomination, O'Donnell will begin moving toward the center. I understand she's released a statement saying it's okay to do it until you need glasses.

Politically, O'Donnell has told Fox News that President Obama 'is so liberal that he's anti-American'."

I see O'Donnell is a member of the Newt Gingrich ("Democrats are the enemies of normal Americans")/Spiro Agnew school of thinking. Honest policy differences are one thing, but as a liberal I really resent the assertion -- or implication -- that I am anti-American or un-American.

Cue: Old Seinfeld "Master of his Domain" Episode
I hope SNL has recruited Tina Fey for Sarah and someone to play O'Donnell...ooohhh are they going to have fun.

I'd like to offer up something that's pure conjecture on my part. And I don't mean to be sexist at all. But, she reminds me of the boys who enter the priesthood because they "can't throw a ball," if you get my meaning. This is a woman who is advocating a kind of celibacy that only priests and nuns are asked to endure. She's adamant that people not touch themselves until married. And yet, at 41, she's not found a good Christian man to hunker down with.

Is it at all possible that she is confused about her own sexuality and has chosen an asexual path as a frightened response to it?

I'm not saying "she ain't got a man so she must be a gay" at all. Or that there's anything wrong at all with being gay. But I am saying that if she's so purity driven, I'd be surprised if there wasn't some deep-seated reason for it. And my guess is she'd be a lot better off admitting it, at least to herself.

Yep. She'll make a find president some day...

Isn't the first rule of orgy room is that you don't talk about orgy room?

Cue: Old Seinfeld "Master of his Domain" Episode

I think JohnR is on to something here. Coons and O'Donnell should forgo an election and just see which one can go the longest without, um, you know...

As far as SNL, maybe Jane Leeves can reprise her roll as the virgin from that Seinfeld episode.

Given how much of her adult life has been devoted to telling others what they should and should not do in their private lives, what kind of pass can we expect the media to give her when, like Angle, she repeats the standard Tea Party rants against "Big Government"?

At the least, the Coons campaign should be ready to pounce on it

Posted by: Dwight on September 15, 2010 at 4:54 PM | PERMALINK

"But I am saying that if she's so purity driven, I'd be surprised if there wasn't some deep-seated reason for it."

She doesn't want anyone to see her dirty pillows. "LET'S PRAY!"

Posted by: SaintZak on September 15, 2010 at 4:55 PM | PERMALINK

Sorry. By "her" I meant Christine O'Donnell, not Jane Leeves.

ThinkProgress just reported that her website has been stripped of all information. Now she can be born again - Hallelujah!
