QUOTE OF THE DAY.... The open U.S. Senate race in West Virginia may prove to be far more competitive than Democrats had hoped, and both major party candidates will no doubt be working hard in the coming weeks to prove that they understand the concerns of hard-working, middle-class Americans.

To that end, perennial candidate John Raese (R) may need to sharpen his message a bit. Here's the conservative candidate yesterday, appearing on a radio show:

HOST: Tell us a little bit about you and your business experience and how you got here.

RAESE: I made my money the old-fashioned way, I inherited it. I think that's a great thing to do. I hope more people in this country have that opportunity as soon as we abolish inheritance tax in this country, which is a key part of my program.

First, insisting that getting rich through inheritance is "a great thing to do" doesn't exactly scream "man of the people."

Second, if the inheritance tax was so onerous, then how is it Raese got to be so much wealthier than the typical West Virginian?

And third, if Raese seriously believes regular folks will have new-found opportunities at wealth just as soon as the inheritance tax on multi-millionaires is eliminated, then he probably doesn't realize that 99.75% of Americans already pay no inheritance tax, and the current law doesn't affect anyone inheriting less than $3.5 million. Indeed, Raese may be confused, but there really aren't that many ultra-rich families in West Virginia, so making breaks for multi-millionaires "a key part" of his platform is probably a bad idea.

Where does the Republican Party find these guys?

"Where does the Republican Party find these guys"

Well, they are very good at looking under rocks and shutting down mental wards.

Raese is just being honest about the Republican platform.

More skillful Republicans know they need to lie about it.

Raese even called it the inheritance tax, no the death tax. I actually like the fact that this guy is being straight about it. Not enough to vote for him of course.

Most republicans are very afraid to debate the opposition this cycle.
I really get depressed when I read the comments on this site that are super critical of the democrats, it is time to get with the program, I do not want the republicans to wipe out any progress that has been made, Obama has a couple more years on this term and if we don't let the repubs ruin the ongoing (slow) progress, we can keep making things better. We are a country that seems to want instant gratification.Things do not come easy, I lived in WW2 Europe and learned that good things take time.

One thing you have to realize is that the GOP has very successfully convinced tens of millions of average people that they are subject to the death tax. I have two people with whom I work that both make less than $30,000 a year and live in trailers. And both of them are righteously pissed off that when they die the government will take half of their estates.

You can show them the law in black-and-white that they won't pay any estate tax. But it makes no difference. They're convinced to the marrow of their bones that the tax applies to them, is totally unfair, and needs to be repealed.

So this probably isn't a losing platform for Raes.

If Manchin doesn't play the audio loop of this, over and over, with some catchy graphics/video, he's a fool. Of course, being a Democrat, he may just climb on board and bewail the unfairness of "death taxes" and how awful it is that millionaires are persecuted in our fine country. It's the new Democratic strategery to win the hearts and minds of common folk!

Raese knows two things.

He knows that 99.75% of people won't pay inheritance tax and he knows that 99.75% of people who are listening to what he says don't know the first thing about inheritance tax.

Currently unearned income is taxed less than earned income. Unless this changes, idiots like Raese will continue to brag about hitting a triple, when the rest of us already know he was merely born on third base! -Kevo

It's like when Ronald Reagan commented on the U.S. system "it worked for me" as if the solution to poverty was for every one to move to Hollywood and become a movie star. Then again, that seems to be all that the R's care about, whether it works for them.

In fact, doesn't the inheritance tax work like most other taxes -- not only do people not pay it if they inherit less than $3.5 Million, but if they inherit more than this, don't they only pay it on the amount over $3.5 million? (Which means they'd have to inherit more than $5.5 mill to pay 20% of it to taxes.)

I don't think this is going to go over well in a state like West Virginia.

Actually, there is no federal estate tax this year -- just ask the Steinbrenner family.

Waitaminute. I thought that John Houseman told us the old-fashioned way of making money was to EARN it.

Posted by: josef on September 24, 2010 at 1:07 PM | PERMALINK

He said "tax cut." That's all a Republican needs to hear.

Posted by: chrenson on September 24, 2010 at 1:17 PM | PERMALINK

I doubt that most Americans know they are not subject to an estate tax. Thus the fear of losing half of Mom's estate (now valued at $25,000 because her stay in the nursing home wasn't too long) sounds reasonable. Especially when they are looking forward to that inheritance to pay off their existing debt.

RAESE: I made my money the old-fashioned way, I inherited it.

With any luck maybe some dilettante offspring of his will arrange to do the same thing.

Unfortunately, most West Virginians are CONVINCED that they are only one lottery ticket away from being a gazillionaire, and the covenience stores are more than happy to sell them tickets in exchange for the food stamps that the majority of the population gets from those awful folks in Washington.
