LYING ABOUT LYING IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA.... I didn't occur to me that Christine O'Donnell blatantly lying about her educational background would turn into a multi-day story, but it just keeps getting more interesting.

The story started when O'Donnell claimed to have graduated with a bachelor's from Fairleigh Dickinson years before she actually earned a degree. It got worse when we learned that O'Donnell lied about having studied at Oxford, and lied again about post-grad work at Princeton. It got even worse when O'Donnell lied about a fellowship at Claremont Graduate University.

By way of a defense, O'Donnell's poor campaign staff argued yesterday that the bogus claims were part of the candidate's LinkedIn bio, but O'Donnell wasn't responsible for that unauthorized bio and she shouldn't be blamed for its inaccuracies. That, of course, didn't make sense -- there have been media questions about information from that LinkedIn page for weeks, and neither O'Donnell nor her team ever questioned its veracity. Indeed, when reporters asked yesterday why the campaign never challenged the authenticity of the bio before, the staff couldn't answer.

Just when it seemed the story couldn't get worse for the extremist candidate, it gets worse.

[T]he claim that Christine O'Donnell studied at Oxford has now turned up on a second O'Donnell online resume, this one from ZoomInfo. [...]

This morning, the Democratic National Committee pointed out that O'Donnell is also described in a ZoomInfo entry as having achieved a "certificate" in "Post Modernism in the New Millennium" from the "University of Oxford." The Zoom Info entry was labeled, "user verified."

ZoomInfo, which has spent the day looking into this, has sent over a statement detailing what happened with this profile. According to the company, O'Donnell's profile was claimed in 2008 through something called a "double opt-in process."

The only way that resume, with its patently false claims, could have been published is by O'Donnell posting it to the site. She had plenty of opportunities to correct it, but chose to leave the falsehoods in place.

Worse, TPM found instances in which O'Donnell told similar lies on her MySpace page, 2008 campaign website, and 2006 campaign website. She included deceptive information about her education in court filings, and repeated related false claims during recent media interviews.

This wasn't a typo or sloppy word choice.

In other words, Christine O'Donnell lied, and then lied about lying. This, coupled with her suspected campaign embezzlement, suspected tax fraud, background in witchcraft, rejection of modern science, hatred of gays, anti-masturbation efforts, and hysterically extreme political worldview, makes her a U.S. Senate candidate who's literally hard to believe.

Update: Wait, one more piece of evidence has emerged. Those working for the O'Donnell campaign probably aren't well grounded anyway, but this story is unspinnable.

All this really gets me wondering why on earth God is making her run for office. Is He teaching her some sort of lesson or what?

In other words, a perfect Republican candidate.

Posted by: ScottW714 on September 30, 2010 at 4:39 PM | PERMALINK

The poor thing's crazy, bless her heart.

Posted by: buddy66 on September 30, 2010 at 4:40 PM | PERMALINK

First she's nuts about sex, which the media eats up. Now she's caught flagrantly making stuff up.

The huge question for the Democratic strategists - can they connect the dots between her and other GOP candidates? That's the skill, every question to a Dem on O'Donnell should link her with Angle, Rand, Miller, one of the other candidates.

Somewhere there's video of her claiming these bogus credentials. I wonder if Bill Maher has it?

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

when will these fools ever learn?

Posted by: fourlegsgood on September 30, 2010 at 4:41 PM | PERMALINK

Someone please ask her to define "post modernism."

Posted by: kc on September 30, 2010 at 4:45 PM | PERMALINK

This will only endear her to her followers and the anti-eletist and anti-intellectual crowd that denies facts and reality.
Stewart and Colbert, the ball's in your court, since the Democrats can's handle a "simple" message like this:
O'Donell's a person who's running on being an anti-intellectual, claiming degree's from 'intellectual' institutions, that she used to give her intellectual bona-fide's, and to give her credibility, lying about attending those institutions, that she never attended, so now she can claim that she's really anti-intellectual.
I need a drink. My head hurts.

Posted by: c u n d gulag on September 30, 2010 at 4:46 PM | PERMALINK

Oh my oh my oh my. Will this trump her TeePee backing? My guess is no. Jimmy Swaggart is preaching to large weeping and waving crowds about the evils of adultery. Jim Bakker is in Branson, still fleecing his "flock". The Rev. Eddie Long will survive the "allegations". Catholic priests will continue to molest. Beck and Gingrich exist. All's well in the true believers' world.

Posted by: eversosoft on September 30, 2010 at 4:48 PM | PERMALINK

Isn't this the same person who claimed that she couldn't ever, ever, ever tell a lie, not even to protect Anne Frank from the Nazis?

Posted by: Mike on September 30, 2010 at 4:52 PM | PERMALINK

This will only endear her to her followers and the anti-eletist and anti-intellectual crowd that denies facts and reality.

I fear you are right. Here's the ad I'd run against her.

"Christine O'Donnell claims she's just like the average Delawarean. Really? Ask yourself, are you a tax cheat? an embezzler? do you routinely lie about your education or your job history? I don't think so.

I believe Delawareans are honorable, honest people and they're nothing like Christine O'Donnell. Delaware deserves better. Hell, she's not even from here. She's from NJ!!"

Posted by: fourlegsgood on September 30, 2010 at 4:52 PM | PERMALINK

She'll win. Bank on it. The teabaggers will circle the wagons to fend off the marauding elites.

Posted by: Hoyt Pollard on September 30, 2010 at 4:52 PM | PERMALINK

Hoyt, I don't think she'll win, there aren't enough republicans in DE.

In a sane world, she'd have been shamed out of the race by now.

Posted by: fourlegsgood on September 30, 2010 at 4:55 PM | PERMALINK

If only her eyesight was in need of correction, she could get glasses just like Simple Sarah's and complete the uncanny similarities between these two dim-witted airheads.

Posted by: Bo on September 30, 2010 at 4:59 PM | PERMALINK

And tomorrows multi-day story headline will be: "Lying About Lying About Lying is Never a Good Idea".
Oh my, will it ever stop?

Posted by: whichwitch on September 30, 2010 at 5:03 PM | PERMALINK

All this really gets me wondering why on earth God is making her run for office.

It's part of His ineffable plan. It is no surprise that it makes no sense to us.

Posted by: dr2chase on September 30, 2010 at 5:04 PM | PERMALINK

If only the media had been so energetic about George W. Bush's National Guard and police records. If Republicans didn't care then, then why would they care now? O'Donnell has a one-way ticket to Palookaville, but there will be some reactionary money waiting for her after November.

Posted by: Todd B. on September 30, 2010 at 5:20 PM | PERMALINK

Oh Greg, honesty is just an elitist, progressive notion that has the potential to unravel the fabric of our Right-wing nation. Liberal terrorism at it's core!

Posted by: Curtis E. Maye on September 30, 2010 at 5:21 PM | PERMALINK

"Delaware deserves better. Hell, she's not even from here. She's from NJ!!"

'fourlegsgood' has put his/her finger (hoof?) on the root cause of this very seriously flawed candidate's problem. She is from New Jersey.
Oh and she, like every other recently minted right wing nut candidate is a lying, cheating, stealing, hypocritical, dimwit. That too.

Posted by: robert on September 30, 2010 at 5:22 PM | PERMALINK

Robert, there's no question about why Sarah loves Christine so much - grifters stick together.

Posted by: fourlegsgood on September 30, 2010 at 5:26 PM | PERMALINK

If she quits the race in disgrace now, does Castle get on the ballot? Could the Dems actually blow this?

Posted by: Tim H on September 30, 2010 at 5:30 PM | PERMALINK

Tim, she won't quit. not a chance - not only does she not have any shame, the more she gets beat up, the better her "victimhood" wingnut welfare paycheck will be at the end of the process.

She's a true grifter - she knows exactly what she's doing.

Posted by: fourlegsgood on September 30, 2010 at 5:43 PM | PERMALINK

Well, at least she'll lose by double digits this November.

The same can't be said of Rand Paul, Sharron Angle, Joe Miller, etc., etc., all of whom have done far worse things than pad their resumes.

Posted by: 400metres on September 30, 2010 at 5:44 PM | PERMALINK

Tim H, I'm thinking we need to lay off O'Donnell at this point. I want her in the race. Hell, I want her in every race, as the slack-jawed face of the Republican party.
She is fruit that is hanging way too low at this point. Time to put the spotlight of shame on another Republican -- and so many to choose from!

Posted by: hells littlest angel on September 30, 2010 at 5:47 PM | PERMALINK

Just play up the 'witchcraft' angle. If there is one ugly word in the Christians' lexicon, it's 'witchcraft'.

Repeat if over and over, Dems. I don't see my Fundamentalist father voting for no witch... under any circumstances.

Posted by: JTK on September 30, 2010 at 5:56 PM | PERMALINK

Yes, I know... the Wiccans. But you don't learn to play this game at the level of a Republican by sparing your allies' feelings. You throw the poop that sticks, then apologize later. ;o)

Posted by: JTK on September 30, 2010 at 6:00 PM | PERMALINK

Wait a sec!
Is TPM implying that if you do not pick up your diploma you didn't graduate? That is bogus.

Posted by: thebewilderness on September 30, 2010 at 6:06 PM | PERMALINK

> "All this really gets me wondering why on earth God is making her run for office."

Perhaps he wants to help Democrats retain control of the Senate??? (I've heard many a 'God help us' around here in recent months...)

Posted by: tnoord on September 30, 2010 at 6:06 PM | PERMALINK

It's also a pathetically badly conceived lie. O'Donnell didn't even bother to figure out what kind of lie would pass muster with anybody who's familiar with Oxford. You just can't obtain a "certificate" in "Post Modernism in the New Millennium" from Oxford, even if you do enroll there. There's no such program, and what the heck is a "certificate" anyhow? On top of that, it's name is "Oxford University", not the "University of Oxford."

Posted by: smintheus on September 30, 2010 at 6:09 PM | PERMALINK

I am reading this story on WM/PA, but will I see it on FOX, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN? Probably not unless it includes an equivalancy by the Dems. Fair & Balanced, across the bored(sic).

Posted by: st john on September 30, 2010 at 6:19 PM | PERMALINK

Ok, I take the last bit back. Seems that some have now taken to using the expression "University of Oxford" at least occasionally, probably as a result of UK government measures to standardize aspects of post-secondary education in Britain during the last couple decades. But nearly everybody associated with it calls it Oxford University.

Posted by: smintheus on September 30, 2010 at 6:21 PM | PERMALINK

Christine O'Donnell: "Eek, a transgenic mouse"!

Posted by: Trollop on September 30, 2010 at 6:32 PM | PERMALINK

You make it sound like lying is a bad characteristic for a Republican.

Posted by: qwerty on September 30, 2010 at 6:47 PM | PERMALINK

Is TPM implying that if you do not pick up your diploma you didn't graduate? That is bogus.

When failure to pick up the diploma is caused by not having completed all credits, as O'Donnell hadn't until this year, yes.

Next.

Posted by: another christine on September 30, 2010 at 7:22 PM | PERMALINK

Wow. So the O'Donnell facade is rapidly crumbling, as it should, exposing her as the crazy that she is....

....and yet we still are in the circular firing squad, shooting at Dems and threatening to sit the election out.

Something isn't right with this.

Posted by: Marc McKenzie on September 30, 2010 at 8:05 PM | PERMALINK

And of course a person who lies about herself will lie about anything else ... What is truly horrible, is that today's Loombowel-Faux debased voter could actually elect a hack like that. Everyone, including all the prima donas around here, need to get out and stop those philistines from storming the gates.

Posted by: neil b on September 30, 2010 at 8:07 PM | PERMALINK

"Grifter" - a person who swindles you by means of deception or fraud
chiseler, chiseller, defrauder, scammer, swindler, gouger
card shark, card sharp, card sharper, cardsharp, cardsharper, sharper, sharpie, sharpy - a professional card player who makes a living by cheating at card games
clip artist - a swindler who fleeces the victim
con artist, con man, confidence man - a swindler who exploits the confidence of his victim
beguiler, cheater, deceiver, trickster, slicker, cheat - someone who leads you to believe something that is not true
welcher, welsher - someone who swindles you by not repaying a debt or wager

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT WE ARE DEALING WITH IN THESE TEA BAG CANDIDATES.

Posted by: robert on September 30, 2010 at 10:15 PM | PERMALINK

O'Donnell, Shirvell, all just malicious appetizers for the main course after the midterms. These are the foot soldiers for the lunatic rightwing. These are signs of the more significant directions that will be guiding our discourse. We may have to drop the ficiton that these are just oddities from the fringe as opposed to representatives of mainstream Tea Bagger population.

Posted by: mickster99 on October 1, 2010 at 2:21 AM | PERMALINK

What a hoot! She's a liar, a fraud, and a weirdo. And a Republican. So, if she gets elected, will anyone be surprised? I am personally laughing my tutu off, but that's because I don't live in Delaware. (If anybody brings up Enzi, Barrasso, or Alan Simpson, I shall be found hiding under my bed sobbing and waving the little flag that identifies me as the last Democrat standing.)

Posted by: Thisby on October 1, 2010 at 2:33 AM | PERMALINK

Calvin & Hobbes saw this coming...

Posted by: Laborman on October 1, 2010 at 7:03 AM | PERMALINK

Win or lose, O'Donnell will list "elected to the US Senate, 2010" on the next version of her resume.

Posted by: Snarki, child of Loki on October 1, 2010 at 8:23 AM | PERMALINK

According to xtian fundamentalism, it's OK to lie if it's for a good (righteous) reason. Even it's lying about lying.

Posted by: Marko on October 1, 2010 at 9:00 AM | PERMALINK

Marko, I don't think that's in the Bible so if they are it's their own indulgence. But militant Islamists certainly do think that deceiving the enemy is OK.

Posted by: neil b on October 1, 2010 at 9:07 AM | PERMALINK

Marko - I'm unfamiliar with that, and I was a Christian fundamentalist myself in my youth. The scripture is pretty clear.

So, all fundamentalists lie (because they're human and all humans lie), but I don't think you can get many of them to find a basis for it in the bible.

One could argue in O'Donnell's case that she was really more of a busybody, eager to tell other people what to do (stop masturbating! stop lying!) than any kind of a Christian. That rule applies to Palin, too. even though she's a differently flavored nut.

Posted by: Rathskeller on October 1, 2010 at 10:50 AM | PERMALINK

But she has Jesus in her heart, so it's all good!

Posted by: Just Dropping By on October 1, 2010 at 11:01 AM | PERMALINK

Rathskeller: Or one might accept the evidence and argue that she's an unmitigated nutbag, inside a thinly transparent pseudo-Christian shell. Sarah, too. And George. And Glenn. And . . .
