NOT A GREAT WEEK FOR GOP GOVERNORS AND DIVERSITY.... We learned late last week that new Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) has picked 22 officials for his cabinet -- 17 white men and 5 white women. He's the first Ohio governor from either party to have a cabinet lacking any racial or ethnic diversity in a half-century.
And just to make matters a little worse, Kasich's office flubbed a King Day resolution, too. (via Matt Yglesias)
Monday was a holiday, just not the one Gov. John Kasich's staff had on its mind.
The Republican governor issued a resolution on Monday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., except instead of recognizing the slain black Civil Rights leader on Jan. 17, 2011, Kasich signed a document that recognized him on March 17, 2011 -- St. Patrick's Day, a holiday devoted to the life of an Irish apostle.
This was obviously an unfortunate clerical error, and I suspect it was an embarrassing, not a deliberate, slight. Accidents happen, and I'm more concerned about Kasich's all-white cabinet than his St. Patrick's Day proclamation on MLK Day.
But it's also a reminder that this hasn't been a great week for Republican governors and respect for diversity. We learned late last week about Kasich's cabinet, which was right around the time Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R), in response to NAACP criticism, said, "Tell them to kiss my butt." And this occurred shortly before Alabama Gov.-elect Robert Bentley (R) delivered a message to his non-Christian constituents: "I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister."
All of these developments occurred over the course of five days.
When Republicans ponder why they struggle with outreach to minority communities, they may want to reflect on these incidents.

The only thing "Republicans" and "reflect" have in common is the "re-."

OTOH, I don't know that having drunken parades and "Kiss Me, I'm African-American" T-shirts to celebrate MLK Day would be such a terrible thing.

Nah, it's totally because people like you are reporting what people like them are doing. It's all the Lame Stream Media...no, the Democrat...no, it's Barack HUSSAIN Nobama's fault!! Did I mention it's not their fault? They are just the victim of their own racism.

Struggling with outreach to minorities did not seem to hurt them at all in the 2010 election cycle. Was this because Democrats did not vote in the same proportion as 2008; or, was it because there were more people who don't care about minorities in 2010?

And then these assholes supporters question why there are laws against descrimination in hiring.
What, not ONE single Black, Asian, or Hispanic is qualified in your states? NOT ONE? And only a handful of women, apparently.

No, Withay, it was because the economy still sucks and Obama and the dems didn't try harder to accomplish nothing by fighting harder for shit that would never have passed. Ask Jane Hampsher. It would have been great for the Dems to have tried to get everything we wanted passed and accomplished nothing vs. getting tons of shit passed that didn't go far enough, even tho there was no way any of it would have passed. It was Dems like Hampsher who actively tried to stop healthcare from passing because nothing was better than anything - knowing the votes weren't there - who did a wonderful job of whatever the opposite of GOTV is.

For years they wandered in the wilderness, bereft of words they had once proudly used to show their superiority. Spik, kike, hunky, wop, (and the one missing here).
Now, with their return to power, they are beginning to feel their oats, exemplified-so far- buy deed, rather than word. Rest assured, with their 2012 landslide, they will finally once again be able to call a spade an spade. . .

Hey, from Kasich's perspective, Republicans tried an affirmative action "diversity" hire when they put Michael Steele in charge of the RNC. That did not work out so well. So, he's a little gun-shy about putting a darky in his cabinet just for the sake of diversity.
Oops, I apologize for using the word "GUN"-shy, i light of recent events. It was insensitive of me.

NEWS FLASH: GOP NOT CONCERNED ABOUT DIVERSITY!!!!
Seriously, the GOP's position has always been anti-diversity, anti-minority, anti everything that doesn't fit into their white male dominated view of what America should be.
The difference today is they can throw off the shackles of political correctness and show their true colors. The tea party, the rise of the right wing lunatic fringe to dominance in the GOP, and of course a half black man with a foreign name in the WH, have all contributed to their new found freedom of expression.
The bottom line is these people are all cowards an are unable to face the inevitable change taking place in 21st century America.

A Laguna Beach, CA surf shop apologized for its black themed MLK holiday sale, where they offered 20 percent off black colored products.

This is all consistent with a Republican "resurgence" that will soon fade amid growing public scorn and contempt. The Republicans just can't help themselves.

Republicans do let the mask slip once in a while. You get what you vote for. Congrats America.

"...St. Patrick's Day, a holiday devoted to the life of an Irish apostle."
Okay, unless he was referring to the staid celebration of St. Patrick's Day in Ireland, I will just assume Yglesias was being facetious in his description of the American version of St. Paddy's Day.

From this morning's Cincinnati Enquirer: "Nine days after Kasich was expected to release resumes of everyone applying for state government jobs, his staff continues to compile them -- but not release them."
The Enquirer (which endorsed Kasich) made a request for these public records back on November 20th!
Why do I bring this up? Kasich doesn't think anything applies to him, whether it's an open records law or the custom to hire a diverse cabinet. He doesn't think he's a governor, he's thinks he's a king.
If you want details on all the havoc he's wrecked in three short weeks: www.plunderbund.com.

The name of the game in politics is dancing with the guy that brought you. It looks like Kasich is doing that. What's the problem?
The Republican problem is that so few non-whites support them. This should not be true, but is. Minorities are not genetically predisposed to be liberals any more than whites are. Republicans choose to stiff-arm minorities.
