FEAR OF GAY COOTIES SPREADS IN ADVANCE OF CPAC.... I knew some on the right are outraged about gay conservatives appearing at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this year, but I didn't actually expect them to have larger successes.

If you're just joining us, CPAC, arguably the nation's largest annual right-wing gathering, kicks off in just a few weeks. Under normal circumstances, the buzz would be about the speakers' list and the size of the crowd.

And that would make sense. This should be an especially big year for CPAC -- emboldened Republican Party leaders will be on hand to boast about their right-wing agenda, and a legion of likely presidential candidates will be on hand to kiss the base's ring. The turnout should be huge.

But some prominent conservatives have decided to skip the party. In December, several prominent religious right organizations, including the Family Research Council and the American Family Association, announced they will boycott the event because organizers agreed to allow a gay Republican group, GOProud, to participate.

Yesterday, the U.S. Senate's most right-wing member announced he, too, will refuse to attend.

South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint will skip this year's Conservative Political Action Conference, making him the most prominent conservative figure yet to express objections to what critics see as a pro-gay, libertarian tilt to the 38-year old event.

"With leading conservatives [sic] organizations not participating this year, Senator DeMint will not be attending. He hopes to attend a unified CPAC next year," DeMint spokesman Wesley Denton said in an email.

And by "unified," DeMint's office means "without those gay people around."

He's not the only member to take this stand -- Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the House Republican Study Committee, will also boycott CPAC for the same reason.

That DeMint is an extremist on social issues isn't exactly new. Just a couple of months ago, he told Fox News, "You can't be a fiscal conservative and not be a social conservative." DeMint has even said there should prohibitions on unmarried women and gays teaching in public schools. A freedom-loving libertarian he isn't.

But this CPAC boycott is nevertheless pretty ridiculous. DeMint doesn't even want to be in the same room as some of the nation's leading right-wing activists if there are a few conservative gays there? Is the fear of gay cooties this strong?

George Lucas was capable of very little that rose above this line ,
"Senator , come over to the dark side of the force" .

Interesting. Pat Robertson's little chat with god told us nothing about 2011, but the horrors that will take place in 2012. Surely it is a coincident that will be a presidential election year.

National Tea Party leaders, holding firm to their principle that economic and constitutional issues should take precedendce over social ones, promptly denounced DeMint.

Sorry, just thought it would be funny to imagine a world where there's some logical consistency to these guys.

"Cooties" of every kind seem to energize Republicans- the seating situation at the SOTU address next Tuesday, for example.

Here's hoping the GOP's childish Cootiephobia goes viral.

For a serious person purportedly representing his constituents, his stance is beyond just a position of social conservatism. Perhaps he is fearful that someone will recognize him without his wig, make-up and push-up bra.

I cringe when I see references to "libertarian" leanings in the GOP, because I've seen very little that looks like libertarian ideology -- except hating taxes and regulation. Of course, it's also difficult to see much in the line of traditional conservatism, either.

Is there really a movement in the GOP or the Tea Party focusing on individual rights? Any interest in staying completely out of bedrooms and churches? A handful of confused gay conservatives doesn't seem to qualify.

c u n d gulag-they're probably ok with lesbians. They're afraid they'd get the crap beat out of them.

Whether or not GOProud participates there will be plenty of gays at CPAC, just like every year.

Holy shit, has CPAC still not happened? We've been hearing about its infiltration by gay socialist Muslim atheist negroes for so long I just assumed it was weeks ago.

DeMint doesn't even want to be in the same room as some of the nation's leading right-wing activists if there are a few conservative gays there?

Well, yes.

I'm sure Benen's faux-naif approach to the question is sarcastic, but still; it's entirely possible - and reasonably apparent - that DeMint's distaste for homosexuals and homosexuality is deep, and sincere. I disagree - but then, I think most men are beautiful - but I'm not going to doubt DeMint on his sincere opposition to gays until proven otherwise. Indeed, I think this is the point - if conservatives are serious about rejecting gays and homosexuality, then of course it has to be philosophically consistent. And largely, they're not serious, nor consistent. Because "opposing gays" is generally absurd.

The point really, is that like a number of "social issues" the real rifts here are within the right, not between right and left (though the idea of massive gay acceptance on the left is, itself, not as complete as many would like to tell themselves it is). Like Ted Olsen leading the fight against Prop 8, and Dick Cheney with his daughter, there's a strain of gay tolerance on the right that's always, quietly, been the thing that trips the antigay right. It's why the Log Cabin Republicans, God love em, are probably to be credited for doing the hard work: change on this will come from within, not from without. And we on the left may think DeMint and the AFA are silly, but they are, at least, consistent. It's the conservatives who admit that GOProud has a place - and a point - while mouthing platitudes against gay marriage who are inconsistent... and who, really, will tip the scales towards further change.

Why would any self-respecting homosexual even go to it?

Posted by: SaintZak on January 22, 2011 at 12:46 PM | PERMALINK

Talking about cooties, this probably apocryphal, but a friend told me about her husband being in a biker bar with some friends talking about what a pain in the butt Jehovah's Witnesses are. Some of the bikers gathered around to add their two cents in agreement. My friend's brother-in-law reportedly told a story about telling one of these JW's to go away at which point the JW threw a vial of perfume at him saying that it will make him gay, and hit him on the chest with it.

"The perfume just won't wash out and this is the very shirt."

He invited one of the bikers to smell it and when he did, the brother-in-law kissed him. There was dead silence and then everyone about died laughing.

"DeMint has even said there should prohibitions on unmarried women and gays teaching in public schools."

Wait, what?

"DeMint has even said there should prohibitions on unmarried women and gays teaching in public schools."

Say WHAT??

"DeMint has even said there should prohibitions on unmarried women and gays teaching in public schools."

What in the HELL is wrong with "unmarried women... teaching in public schools"?
I sorta understand the homophobia thing -- especially since it really is becoming completely undeniable that every single 'phobe really is just a pathetic closet case working out (or more accurately not working out) his own issues.
But where the hell did "unmarried women" shouldn't be "teaching in public schools" even come from?
And -- more importantly -- why has nobody else here said word one about this?

Methinks Mr. DeMint doth protest too much. Kinda like Phred Felps ;->

What has been the end tally of the Republicans righteous indignation against anything, what has it really helped or saved?

The personal comfort of the hater is about all I've seen "saved" in the many years I've listened to conservative hate.
