AN UNDERWHELMING BOAST.... Disgraced former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) didn't kick off his presidential exploratory committee last week, but he did unveil a website that kinda sorta looks like it's part of a presidential exploratory committee. How's the site going so far?
Well, yesterday, four days after the site's launch, Gingrich's exploratory entity boasted on Twitter about its web traffic.
Over 5000 people have visited NewtExplore2012.com since Thursday. Have you?
Gingrich has been a little out of the loop since leaving public office more than a decade ago, so it's possible he thinks 5,000 people visiting a website over the course of four days is impressive.
It's not. This isn't a statistic to brag about; it's a statistic a campaign operation should keep well hidden. For higher-profile political blogs with relatively strong traffic, having 5,000 visitors represents a pretty good hour, not a pretty good four-day stretch.
As Atrios joked, "Over 5000 people have visited eschatonblog.com since 2 o'clock. Have you?"
Also note, some of the folks who stopped by NewtExplore2012.com weren't interested in actually supporting Gingrich's presidential ambitions. Hell, I'm one of the 5,000, and I only went to chuckle at Gingrich's use of stock photos and to see him trying too hard to incorporate his third wife into every part of his campaign.
In other words, Gingrich launched a website, and despite massive media attention, no one's actually going to the site. If 50,000 people had visited NewtExplore2012.com from Thursday to Sunday, it would have been pretty awful for someone who seriously expects to compete at a national level. But 5,000 is cover-your-eyes bad.
I don't imagine Newt will take this as a hint, though he should, but I can't help but wonder why someone on his staff didn't stop and think, "Maybe this isn't something to brag about."

Hmm. 5000 hits in four days. I wonder how many of those were reporters, wonks and blogger trying to find out what a semi-exploratory website consists of? The curiosity-seekers probably make up 80% of the 5000.

The latest thinking in indie music circles is that you need to have a fan base of 5000 to make a living at it. But those 5000 people have to be actual fans, willing to attend your concerts and buy your music and maybe even your t-shirts.
Maybe Newt is thinking small for a change?

I always knew Newtie had his own reality, but I didn't know until now that he also had his own math.

Maybe if he takes a vacation with a couple of "goddess" porn stars, he might improve those numbers...

Aid: (Whisper, whisper, whisper).
Dr. Evil: Really?
Aid: (Nods)
Dr. Evil: OK, never mind.
I now am setting the ransom at ONE BILLION DOLLARS! BWA-HA-HA!!!
Newt - what a dipshit.

I think his entire site is going to be DDoS-ed except for the hit counter.

How smart would someone have to be to want to work on Newt's staff?

He obviously "misspoke". He meant 5 quadrabazillion.

I always ask why this guy gets coverage from dozens of blogs every single week on some new announcement and all I hear are crickets.
He's not going to win, ever. Why give this attention whore what he's looking for?

The site is blocked from my computer at work...reason given "Potentially Damaging Content"...sounds about right.

Look, if Newter didn't take the details of his life and the details of his time in public "service" as a hint to his presidential aspirations, there are no hints coming.

From actual experience I would expect that Newt's count has gone up at least a thousand since his site was linked by Steve. Steve is right. Five thousand hits in 4 days is nothing. I predict he will have 20,000 hits by tomorrow. Nothing after that.

Got this when I tried to visit:
This Websense category is filtered: Potentially Damaging Content. Sites in this category may pose a security threat to network resources or private information, and are blocked by your organization.
I guess Websense is pretty smart.

You and the rest of us know it, but the morons who are stupid enough to give money to this con man are probably pretty impressed.

According to Wikipedia:
A newt is an amphibian of the Salamandridae family, although not all aquatic salamanders are considered newts. Some are considered low level politicians tainted by scandal and a huge ego.
Mabe Newt G.'s fans have been going to this frog website by mistake?????

Talk of Newt Gingrich as an "intellectual" has always been the most cynical kind of Bullsh*t.
I'm not at all surprised that someone as stupid a Gingrich doesn't realize that these kind of numbers put him on the underside of Lyndon LaRouche.

"but I can't help but wonder why someone on his staff didn't stop and think, "Maybe this isn't something to brag about."
Who do you think is on his staff, a bunch of tech savvy 20 and 30 somethings? Clearly not.

You think he listens to anyone?? I suspect whatever staff he has knows better than to second-guess Newtie or to dare suggest he isn't the visionary intellectual only he thinks he is.

I was taken to the Gingrich site in that time interval by a parody site of Newt Gingrich Posing in Front of Stock Photos. The parodies - Newt with kittens! Newt with women laughing while eating salad! - were similar to the Gingrich site's image of Gingrich in front of a stock photo of enthusiastic people waving flags. I did not believe their excitement was for the disgraced former speaker of the house. My site visit, like a number of others among those 5,000, should not count as anything favorable for Newt.

"If a guy tells you how many girls he's hooked up with, it's not even close to that. You take that number and divide it by three, then you get the real total. OK, so if Kevin is saying it's been three girls it's more like one or none."

I'm with c u n d gulag: Has Newtie been away so long he's not up on the latest developments in right-wing counting techniques?
5000 visitors should be reported as eleventy-six gajillion.
If he's reporting 5000, doesn't that make the real number somewhere around 23?

T2, you left out the most important thing about newts: many secrete toxins and some of these toxins are deadly enough to kill an adult human. Mr. Gingrich was aptly named, based on the venom he's spewed these many years.
but I can't help but wonder why someone on his staff didn't stop and think, "Maybe this isn't something to brag about."
They're still busy creating their own reality.

For anyone who cares (I notice this stuff cause I'm a programmer), the donate link takes you to an "asp" page, not .aspx.
....Meaning, whoever he paid to put up this thing is using a dead programming language not even in usage anymore...
I think that kinda telling....

Because he's not going to win, ever. He's an anti-government extremist with no charisma whose negatives rise anytime his bile gets any publicity.
Americans don't like him. Anything we can do to help make him the face of the GOP is Good for Democrats.

I'm sure at least half of those hits were Newt checking the hit counter.

The Villager wankers and ditzes won't give up on Gingrichitis, they will keep fawning over him, inviting him to Sunday shows (albeit not as often as Citizen McCain) etc.

By way of comparison, I just found my way to the jezebel.com response to "Rules of Misbehavior," the article on this site about Dan Savage. The jezebel piece -- "Is Dan Savage Our Ann Landers?"-- reports 5,479 views since it was posted two hours ago. Sadie Stein for President! Wait -- her "How to Know if Someone's Lying" has 10,522 views in even less time. She didn't include "His Name is Newt" as one of the clues, though...

Personally,I would be delighted if 5,000 people visited my twitter or twitgoo site http://twitgoo.com/u/KurtRex1453 to look at my quirky political cartoons... today is Arizona Survivor.. but then again I don't have national media exposure and claim to be relevant.

Such a low level of visitors is doubly amazing considering Hannity promoted the site not once but twice during his Friday program. Nice work, Sean!

Hmmm. You prompted me to go look to see how platinum blonde Calista had been "incorporated into every link"... but then got this for my efforts: "This website is temporarily unavailable, please try again later."
Perhaps you crashed his site????? Ha!

I couldn't resist: I reluctantly added myself to Newt's paltry page view numbers. First thing that jumped out at me about the site: it's just one lousy page with almost no actual content! A link to a donation page, a lame note from Newt and wife, and that's pretty much it. What are we supposed to be exploring here? Weak!
Posted by: E.Hatt-Swank on March 7, 2011 at 10:50 PM | PERMALINK
The only thin he is exploring is how to enrich himself. As long as he keeps his intentions vague, he doesn't have to account for the donations he receives.
