April 24, 2012 3:30 PM A Good Community College Gig

By Daniel Luzer

Jill Biden has a rather nice job.

The wife of the vice president supposedly refused a position at a 4-year college in favor of teaching at a community college in the DC-area. Since 2009, she’s been an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College.

It turns out that’s a pretty good job. According to an article by Kaustuv Basu and Paul Fain in Inside Higher Ed:

The couple’s 2011 tax returns indicated that Jill Biden made $82,000 teaching at Northern Virginia Community College. The figure came as a shock because Biden has been identified regularly as an adjunct.
Biden’s pay, however, reflects her promotion to associate professor, college officials said, which comes with a heavier teaching load than her old adjunct gig.

Well yes, but that $82,000 is a pretty good figure even for a full-time professor. The average associate professor of English, in contrast, earned $62,077 for the 2010-11 school year.

Some Community Colleges are as good as four-year, just differently focused. For instance, the CC I recently attended has more awards per student than the 4-year colleges with animation and film degrees, even though it's only a two-year CC. And it really doesn't matter if you're getting your english classes at one or the other; they'll be the same.

I wonder what the median income for an English professor in Virginia is? After all, NoVA is apparently not on the cheaper end.
