October 07, 2011 11:00 AM A Great Big H

By Daniel Luzer

Harvard is really old. The institution was founded by Massachusetts in 1636. As such, the school turns 375 this fall.

There’s a birthday cake. It’s really very big:

The cake will serve about 4,000 people. That’s about one piece for every five undergraduates.

Because Harvard was technically founded “by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony” on September 18, 1636 its birthday has actually already passed. Oh well.

    Correction! 4,000 x 5 = 20,000. That's the total number of students--graduates, undergraduates, non-degree and non-trads. Harvard has about 6,400 undergraduates.
