The annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association, like all conferences, traditionally involves a lot of free stuff. This one, in Montreal, included a few particularly entertaining items.
According to a piece at Inside Higher Ed:
The best give-aways at the book exhibit of the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association this year — to judge by how many people were wearing them — were two buttons distributed by Oxford University Press. The buttons were a reply to Florida Governor Rick Scott, a Republican who has angered many anthropologists by saying that Florida doesn’t need any more of them. One button reads “Actually Rick, Florida could use a few more anthropologists.”
Back in October Scott threatened to move state funding away from the liberal arts and into more “practical fields.” He used anthropology as an example of a major that didn’t deserve public financing because “we don’t need a lot more anthropologists in the state.”
