There’s not much students can do about escalating college costs from year to year. A college can increase fees wherever it wants and students mostly have the option to either pay it or not register for classes.
Well, there is one option: make it really annoying for the college to process payment. According to a piece at CTV Calgary:
A Mount Royal University student staged a one man protest Wednesday morning and his actions left administrative staff with a heavy addition to their next bank deposit.
Devin DeFraine is upset with recent changes to the post secondary institution’s fee payment options. The University has implemented an additional fee of up to 1.89% of the cost of tuition for students paying with Mastercard or Visa.
And so DeFraine paid his tuition in coins. He brought about 230 lbs of change to the registrar’s office earlier in the week to pay for a semester of college. “If they’re gonna nickel and dime us, I’m gonna nickel and dime them,” he said.
The credit card fee costs students about $60 a semester, according to the article.
Note that this sort of thing is perhaps a little easier at Mount Royal University, which is in Calgary, than it would be at many schools in the United States.
Tuition at Mount Royal is about $3,000 a semester.
