College Student Drug Dealers Sentenced
The bizarre story about the drug ring run out of a student’s dorm room at Columbia University is apparently now over.
According to an article by Laura Italiano at the New York Post:
The 20-year-old who’d faced the most serious drug sale charges in last year’s roundup of five Columbia University students is heading to Rikers for just 3 1/2 months under a deal struck in a Manhattan courtroom today.
Harrison David, son of a Boston-area plastic surgeon, had been a third year engineering student when he and four buddies were busted on charges they sold felony-weight quantities of coke, pot and pills out of their frats and apartments.
David will turn himself in at the end of August and the judge will sentence him to six months jail and five years probation, according to the article. This was the deal David and his lawyer made with Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor.
With good behavior he’ll likely be released from prison in time for the spring semester. It’s unlikely, however, that he’ll return to Columbia. The school is almost surely going to expel him.

Do I need to guess that this kid's white? I'm 99.999% sure.
I guarantee that if a black or hispanic kid sold this much, he/she'd be doing a long, long time in prison.

Poor little rich kid. An inner city minority kid dealing out of his apt would be doing 10+ years hard time upstate. If he was living with his family in public housing, they would all be on the street.

What!??!! You can't be serious. College students using and selling drugs? Why, that's impossible.
But, actually, seriously, I am sure that thousands of college kids do this. I know some myself who did it back in the day.

I don't get what's bizarre about this story. Am I missing something? A college student is selling drugs. He says it's for tuition, but it may just be for free drugs. What's the point?
I do agree with gulag that the fact that the kid's the son of a Boston-area plastic surgeon probably has a HELL of a lot to do with the fact that he's not going to be going away for a long time. But otherwise nothing seems particularly untoward or out of the norm.
