The latest issue of the Washington Monthly is live.

Today the magazine released its latest issue. The cover story, by Political Science Professor Suzanne Mettler, looks at tax expenditures and how beneath the surface of American government lurks a system of social programs for the wealthy that is essentially consuming the federal budget.

Also be sure to check out two other features in this issue. Editor John Gravois has a piece about how civic groups like the Lions Club and Rotary International, which are declining in America, are increasingly popular abroad. In another article regular contributors James Verini tells the story of Franz Gayl, a tech-savvy Marine who helped save the lives of countless troops in Iraq, and then paid for it with his career.

Regular readers of the College Guide should check out a piece by Education Sector’s Kevin Carey about Trinity Washington University, a small Catholic women’s college that happens to be the alma mater of major political players like Nancy Pelosi and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
