March 10, 2011 4:51 PM The American Teacher: College Expectations and College Realities

By Daniel Luzer

American high school teachers think it’s important for students to attend college, sort of.

According to the annual MetLife Survey of the American Teacher, slightly over half of American teachers (54 percent) said that “graduating each and every student from high school ready for college and a career is something that must be done as one of the highest priorities in education.”

One wonders what the other 46 percent of teachers are thinking.

The survey also indicated that 75 percent of middle and high school students plan to attend college, reporting that it was “very likely they will go to college.”

Only about 56 percent of American students will actually attend college.

"One wonders what the other 46 percent of teachers are thinking."

Perhaps they're thinking that not every student needs to start out productive life in virtual chattel slavery to financial institutions with thousands upon thousands of dollars in school loan debt, only to find themselves stuck in wage slave jobs with little or no hope of advancement or breaking even for decades, if ever.

    Maybe that's what they're thinking.

So-called higher education is a scam played on many students for the benefit of a few fat cat bankers and their cronies.

Just think a few years back when everyone thought that they absolutely must buy a house because renting was stupid. That meme was a scam perpetrated on the buying public by the real estate and financial services industries.

While I value learning and education, I have to wonder at what price.
