Universities die in stages. Sometimes colleges are forced to cancel classes because of financial problems.

Sometimes they lose accreditation. But it takes a long time to finally admit defeat.

Last year Kevin Carey wrote in this magazine about the problems Washington’s Southeastern University faced with its accreditation.

Well it looks like Southeastern, founded in 1879, is now officially over. This weekend workmen finally removed the Southeastern sign from the building the college had occupied.
