A historic decision to reserve one seat each in its 52 postgraduate departments for transgenders were among the key resolutions approved by Bangalore University’s Academic Council here on Monday.
Vice-Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev said the provision to reserve seats for transgenders under the supernumerary quota would be in addition to the existing reservation. “It will lapse if nobody comes forward,” he said.
Unlike in America, Indian governmental hiring and universities admissions function under a direct quota system. Schools and departments legally maintain specific spots for Indians who are members of discriminated minority groups.
