The Vegan Dining Contest
Peta2, the youth group of the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is now working to convince colleges to create vegan dining halls.
The organization recently announced this contest:
All-vegan dining halls are all the rage on college campuses these days. The University of North Texas made national news last fall when it opened Mean Greens—a 100 percent vegan dining hall—in response to student demand for meat-free meals.
Now, it’s your turn! peta2 is offering a $1,000 prize to the first student group that can improve a dining hall that currently serves meat at its college, by persuading it to go completely vegan.
The dining hall must serve at least 200 students a day, and the switch must be confirmed to peta2 by food services staff.
The winner is the school that merely makes the transition first. I’ve got to say, however, that I’d be much more impressed if students managed to accomplish this at Iowa State than at Hampshire or Oberlin.
