June 29, 2011 11:24 AM Turning Down the Scholarship

By Daniel Luzer

In an update to the recent piece about Maddie Poshard, the Illinois high school student awarded a full scholarship to attend Southern Illinois University, despite the fact that her grandfather is the college’s president, she’s going to pay for college like everyone else.

According to an article in the Chicago Tribune:

The granddaughter of Southern Illinois University’s president has decided to turn down a full-ride academic scholarship to the public university.

Maddie Poshard, 18, made the decision after a Tribune report Sunday that revealed she was one of 24 students selected for the school’s Presidential/Chancellor Scholarship, a taxpayer-funded free ride for four years worth about $80,000.

Poshard still plans to attend her grandfather’s school, however.

Good for her. Since she doesn't need it given how much her family makes, it is prudent that she release the money for someone who also qualifies academically, but needs the money a lot more. I'm sure it will also earn her a lot more respect from her classmates. It isn't that often one encounters a young person with such a strong sense of decency.
