Your tax deductible donation can help us to continue to publish our widely acclaimed print magazine, support Steve Benen's excellent and widely read "Political Animal" blog, and expand our Web presence through better design and expanded content.

For almost two years, the Washington Monthly has been working through the seismic shifts that have roiled the economy and — especially — the publishing world. While other magazines, newspapers, and Web sites are cutting back their coverage or shutting their doors altogether, we're still here, still committed to providing the cutting-edge reporting and analysis the country needs now more than ever. Most important of all, we're continuing to break big stories months or even years ahead of the mainstream press.

WM April 1980Our Patented Early Warning System: From the very beginning, the Washington Monthly has had an almost uncanny ability to be out in front of the news. An early example is Gregg Easterbrook's 1980 cover story that foreshadowed the 1986 and 2003 space WM October 1994shuttle disasters by highlighting the solid-rocket booster and heat-shield tile problems that ultimately led to their loss, for precisely the reasons that Easterbrook forewarned. Then in October 1994, Senator Byron Dorgan predicted with uncanny accuracy that a then-new kind of Wall Street gambling — derivatives trading — could trigger the kind of financial meltdown that actually occurred in September 2008. And in an April 2004 cover story — "There Goes the Neighborhood" — then-editor Ben Wallace-Wells talked about how the cheap-credit-driven housing boom would collapse and take the economy down with it. And now we all know just how accurate that was.

Your generous donation will make possible more of these kinds of stories, both in the magazine and on the Web. Any amount is welcome. But as you consider your donation, please think about what our society would be missing without stories like ours that keep a close watch on our government and elected officials, and what your day would be like without your daily dose of Steve Benen's running commentary on "Political Animal."
