March 03, 2012 3:27 PM Helping Romney Win the All-Important Confederate Constituency

By Adele Stan

So Mitt Romney has an important new celebrity endorser: none other than Ted Nugent, of “Cat Scratch Fever” fame (and not any other hit song kind of fame).

Nugent conveyed his endorsement yesterday via Twitter, reports Politico’s Burns & Haberman Caitlin McDevitt, after having what Nugent tweeted was “a long heart&soul (sic) conversation” with Romney.

In endorsing Romney, the Motor City Madman, as Nugent likes to be known, parts company with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whom Nugent endorsed for governor in 2006. (Perry now belongs to the Gingrich camp.)

Nugent made waves at the governor’s 2007 inaugural ball, according to a report that appeared at the time in the Houston Chronicle:

Nugent appeared onstage wearing a cut-off T-shirt emblazoned with the sure-to-draw-headlines Confederate flag and shouting some unflattering remarks about non-English speakers, according to people who were in attendance. His props were machine guns.

UPDATE: And it gets better. That same year, Nugent referred to Barack Obama as “a piece of sh*t” who should “suck on my machine gun.” In a 1994 interview, Nugent referred to then-First Lady Hillary Clinton as “a toxic c—t,” a “bitch” and a “two-bit whore.”

Nice get, Mitt. (Is this what “severely conservative” means?)

For the record, Nugent says he would have preferred Perry if the Lone Star Tenther hadn’t flunked the debates. From the Texas Tribune:

“Whatever occurred at those early debates that caused the real Rick Perry to take a back seat to whoever that was literally caused my wife to cry,” Nugent said. “We thought, ‘Has he been advised by idiots?’ To this day, we still don’t know what happened.”

H/t to commenter pj in jesusland for hipping me to a litany of other Nugent pronouncements.

    Ted Nugent sucks.

  • seriously on March 03, 2012 4:04 PM:

I don't like his politics and I don't like his solo hit, but the Amboy Dukes' Journey to the Center of the Mind is a cool song and Ted was their lead guitar player. See, it's just like your grandmother said, there's a little good in everyone!

    (admittedly, sometimes it's damn little!)

thanks for your work here, Adele. much appreciated.

Short Ted Nugent bio sums it up:

His 2003 concert in Michigan was canceled because he used the N word on a radio show shortly before the scheduled appearance. Way back in 1990, the Detroit Free Press said, “Nugent’s conversations are peppered with the word ‘n-----,’” and Nugent explained that it was a natural result of his “hanging out with a lot of n-----s.” Last year, at a concert in Dubuque, Iowa, he said; “There’s a lot of white people in this crowd. I like that.” When he’s not calling Perry a “dear friend,” Nugent, who’s already endorsed the governor for president and branded him “the great white buffalo,” is calling Obama “a piece of s--t” and declaring: “He can suck on my machine gun.” This week he wrote a blog post on FoxNation under the headline “America Ripe for Riots Under Obama.” When Nugent’s not talking about African-Americans, he’s announcing that Hillary Clinton, while first lady, was a “toxic c--t” and “a two-bit whore for Fidel Castro.”

Also, there's a lovely, misogynistic photo of a nude girl on his album, "Love Grenade."

Calling Nugent a "character" sounds too forgiving.

  • JD on March 03, 2012 4:31 PM:

Am I the only person outraged that Romney solicited the endorsement of a man who said that he wanted Barack Obama to suck on a machine gun and that Hilary Clinton is a c**t? The press should be asking Romney if he actually solicited this endorsement and what he thinks of Nugent's disgusting rhetoric.

    Really, they should.

  • oldswede on March 03, 2012 4:35 PM:

Nugent is also an advocate of slaughtering wildlife.

  • mellowjohn on March 03, 2012 4:49 PM:

tho mittens didn't go to quite such extremes, it's one draft dodger endorsing another:

"(Nugent claims) that 30 days before his Draft Board Physical, he stopped all forms of personal hygiene. The last 10 days he ingested nothing but junk food and Pepsi, and a week before his physical, he stopped using the bathroom altogether, virtually living inside his pants caked with excrement and urine. That spectacle won Nugent a deferment."

  • Adele Stan on March 03, 2012 5:53 PM:

To be fair to Romney, we're not sure that he solicited Nugent's endorsement. We only have Nugent's tweet. But I've yet to see any reports of Romney repudiating the endorsement.

  • Ted on March 03, 2012 6:37 PM:

In fairness to that other Ted, Journey to the Center of the Mind (which he recorded with the Amboy Dukes) was a top 20 hit.

  • T-Rex on March 03, 2012 7:09 PM:

Ted Nugent is such a macho man that he went to absolutely disgusting lengths to dodge the draft in Viet Nam. I subsequently heard him claim on Bill Maher's show that we would have won if he'd been there, which I guess makes him a traitor, if he single-handedly caused our defeat by not going. His idea of a rational argument is a column-length rant of the kind you expect to hear in a bar from the big boorish lout who's about to be escorted out by the bouncer. He's also the kind of d-list celebrity who thinks his opinion is worth putting in print because he had one hit song. I'd say shut up and sing except that I don't want to hear him sing.

  • ericfree on March 03, 2012 7:32 PM:

Nugent has always claimed he didn't know what "Journey To the Center of the Mind" was about, which, considering the intellect we're dealing with, may well be true.

  • Kathryn on March 03, 2012 7:44 PM:

Ted Nugent surely must be considered a total asshole, good grief. The draft dodging info was news to me.. These hardcore republicans are so revolting it's nearly unbelievable, this coward is supposed to be a patriot. Note to Mrs, Nugent, hate to break it to you, while Rick Perry's advisors were nothing to write home about, the actual idiot was Rick himself, oh and you and Mr. Nugent too, for not recognizing the obvious.

  • angryspittle on March 03, 2012 8:01 PM:

This macho fraud is the same guy who shit his pants (literally) before going in for his physical for the draft. Fucking coward and bully.

  • rrk1 on March 03, 2012 8:14 PM:

Nugent is a bone fide Republican. What else is there to say. He expresses the rank, rancid putrid odor of the new GOP. He and Lush must be great friends.

  • Steve P on March 03, 2012 8:19 PM:

Not sure why the "draft-dodging" pile-on starts whenever people discuss Nugent, Romney, Limbaugh, Gingrich et al.

The best thing about their dodging is that some real soldiers were spared the burden of hauling a useless asshole through the boonies.

The worst is that we'd have to hear them call themselves "Vietnam ERA veterans"--you know, like W or Dan Quayle.

  • rbe1 on March 03, 2012 9:03 PM:

Who's Ted Nugent ? Sounds like a brand of margarine.

Great. Nugent and Limbaugh are a pair of bookends for Romney.

  • tamiasmin on March 04, 2012 2:37 AM:

So Romney is endorsed by a racist dirtbag as his second choice? Even creeps can't warm to this guy.

That part about living inside his pants caked with excrement...

Actually,,, Refusing (for any reason) to murder people for oil or ideology is possible the only decent he's ever done, even if it's because he's a chickenshit.

Actually, I think Ted Nugent is a brilliant performance artist, sort of in the same vein as Andy Kaufman. He's been been spoofing the dumb-ass red-neck for forty years now and they haven't caught on.

The Nuge is a douche, but 'Stranglehold' wasn't a bad tune in its day.
