Political Animal

By Ed Kilgore

Really got into the junk food early today. But I’ll share:

* Palin makes fun of herself on Today show. Should have tried that tactic more often.

* My latest TNR column discusses Romney’s sinking approval ratings.

* Olympia Snowe calls birth control controversy throwback to 1950s. At least that far back.

* Igor Volsky pokes holes in GOP belief that “skin in game” key to health care cost control.

* Evan McMorris-Santoro wonders about disappearance of Bush 43 in 2012 GOP race.

And in non-political news:

* Happy Kentucky fans celebrate NCAA title with Appalachian folk-custom of couch-burning.

Back after I watch Nikki Haley on The View.

Palin's trying to remake herself as a light-weight Elizabeth Hasselbeck - fine, if she wants that kind of career. If so, though, she's going to find herself open to push-back - she won't be protected as she is now, so good luck with that.

And she'll need to blunt her "mean-girl" act, too, cause no one likes that on the couch.

I predict she'll make enough appearances to fatten her bank account, and then quit again.

Mr. Obama came on pretty strong against the Ryan plan and GOPer congressmen in general today. Immediately Ryan and Boner released tired old language dismissing Obama's statements as tired old language. From the text, looks like Ryan and Boner and a writer sat around and made up their "statements" together. Which they probably did. I don't think the GOP was expecting Obama to go into campaign high gear quite so soon...and certainly not quite so hard. nice.

Why waste time watching Palin talking about the lamestream media while she is appearing ON the lamestream media? AND - is Nikki Haley the next "sarah palin" - a halfterm governor who becomes the darling of rightwing media?

I went to Univ of Maryland and we burned the hell out of some couches the year we won't the NCAA tournament (oh so long ago). Its dangerous and childish and stupid, but its not really Appalachian specific thing. Its college.

It occurred to me that if the Republicans were sufficiently Machiavellian, their best use of Bush The Lesser might be to get him to endorse Obama, for continuing so many of his policies.

I am really curious what they are going to do with him at the convention. Schedule him at 9 on the first night, and then "let" the 8:30 speaker ramble on about the evils of Obamacare for three hours before getting Bush on stage?
