I've always thought it a bad idea to award college credit for non-academic work. Allowing students to opt out of introductory courses if they have experience in a certain field would be fine; however, schools awarding credits based on experience run the risk of watering down their standards. Granting credit for experience is a practice I more often associate with by scammy diploma mills than with real universities.
