August 17, 2012 5:56 PM Day’s End and Weekend Watch

By Ed Kilgore

Ready for lots of sleep and no sights or sounds of Paul Ryan tonight. But first have to get past the day’s and week’s remains:

* Top-trending “story” on conservative sites this afternoon was photo of Ryan “topless.” OMG, here we go again.

* Anti-Obama former SEAL leader admits he’s a birther.

* Brother Benen notes incoherence of GOP claim that Obama is to right of their own selves on Medicare.

* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer observes that student loan debt may become large, generational obstacle to homeownership.

* Politico’s Tau & Byers examine Obama’s “soft-media” strategy aimed at non-political venues.

And in non-political news:

* New international study shows 60% of Russian men smoke tobacco products. Tobacco use among women relatively high in Poland (25%), U.K. (21%) and U.S. (16%).

That’s it for the week. Ben Jacobs will be back tomorrow to cover the weekend. Please be nice and engaging with him.

And now, one more Prog video, from King Crimson in Hyde Park, 1969. The crowd is as entertaining as the band.

Selah.

    "Brother Benen notes incoherence of GOP claim..."

    At some point we're going to have to stop expecting coherence from the GOP.

    Kind of hurts your credibility to have the page full of Romney ads spouting absolute lies about "You didn't build that", doesn't it?

    Sheesh.

    Oh, I just LUV today's Politico and Jake Tapper meme that Obama is doing too many "softball" interviews.

    Romney spends 90% of his time catching softballs from Fox News. But over on Political Punch today, that FACT is not even mentioned.

    Additionally, when Obama held his last DC press conference, he was torn to shreds for saying "the private sector is doing fine", after which the DC press said that Obama should NOT do another presser unless he has something earth shattering to say.

    It's very nice for the Romney campaign to have the press in their pockets this much.

    About Ryan topless:

    My conservative brother (I don't think he reads this) said to me when McCain picked Sarah Palin: "Did you see McCain's Vice Presidential pick? She's HOT!"

    But really, there is no reason for Republicans NOT to pick their candidates based on looks. It's not like they expect them to be able to do anything in office.

    A shirtless Eddie Munster? Just wow.

  • PEA on August 17, 2012 9:59 PM:

    So is it legal for Romney to take campaign money from foreigners (in London and Israel)? If not, is anyone doing anything about it?

    He seems so prone to break laws and then retroactively change some paperwork and get away with it (e.g. not really living in MA when he ran for gov; and who knows what in his taxes). Inquiring minds want to know...

    " Anti-Obama former SEAL leader admits hes a birther."

    If I understand this guy right, he thinks Obama's real father was Frank Davis who, in spite of being a spooky commie, was, I believe, an American and making it yet more likely (more than absolutely true, I guess) that Obama is/was eligible to be President.

    I thought the whole Birther thing was to deny O's citizenship. This guy's theory would seem to confirm O's citizenship. Is he really a Birther? Or something completely different?

    I'm not sure why I care or even try to understand such nonsense. Kind of like a car wreck, I guess -- hard not to stare.

    But is a little consistency too much to ask?

    @mb - yeah, I was struck by that same point. How Bailey keeps those two thoughts going at the same time is the real mystery.

    Sort of confirms that a lot of what those loons believe has to be taken on faith, because it doesn't make any sense.
