October 05, 2012 3:54 PM Orc Disses Grover!

By Ed Kilgore

Ah, well, it’s Friday afternoon, so time for a little Political News of the Weird, from Maine via The Note:

These days a completely original line of attack in politics is rare- but in a state Senate race in Maine a totally new messaging strategy has emerged as the state’s Republican Party has begun to highlight Democrat candidate Collleen Lachowicz’s Word of Warcraft persona in the campaign.
Lachowicz, a Democratic challenger running for a Republican-held state Senate seat that encompasses the area between Lewiston and Bangor, is a World of Warcraft fan-she’s a level 85 orc in the popular multi-player online role-playing game. Lachowicz’s gaming hobby came to light earlier this week, and Republicans have jumped on it, launching a website called “Colleen’s World” which highlights comments made by Lachowicz’s warcraft alter-ego, Santiaga.
It turns out that Santiaga has said some not-so-nice things about Republicans, including conservative tax icon and promoter of the “Taxpayer Protection Pledge” Grover Norquist. Santiaga commented that she “may have to go and hunt down Grover Norquist and drown him in my bath tub.”

Now I’m no gamer (maybe some reader who is can provide a little background here), but for all I know, threatening to drown Grover (an allusion, I am sure, to his famous “Starve the Beast” goal of making government so small “we can drown it in a bath tub”) is perfectly appropriate behavior for a “level 85 orc.” Besides, I’m sure Norquist isn’t offended. I once confronted him on CSPAN after writing a piece that all but called him a traitor, and he seemed flattered by the attention.

In the final analysis, though, Maine Republicans are going to have a hard time making anyone else look offensive or scary so long as they support their fine governor, Paul LePage, who is a level 85 troglodyte by most reckonings.

Let's hope she's a frost-spec'd DeathKnight Orc and freeze-dries his butt into AoE oblivion.

I gave up on WoW a few years ago, but won't insult anyone for playing it. It's a good game, a much better way to waste time than sitting passively in front on a TV screen and an interesting way to meet people from all over the world.

And I'll tell you a little bit about political discussions in online games: they are troll-fests of unbelievable proportions and infinite stupidity. They are worse, even, than trolls on any comment board I have ever read.

Arguments in MMOs are not worth becoming involved in, because many people are simply trying to enrage others for giggles. Few people in any game are actually trying to have informative discussions. Arguing over politics in an online game is ONLY useful for raising your blood pressure. Lachowicz should know better than to get in such pointless discussions, and just ignore the trolls and enjoy playing the game.

Oh, and she may be a level 85 Orc, but what I really want to know is: What class does she play?

Well, it helps to put a bit of context with that quote.

    This should help

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/09/02/143966/-You-go-to-a-disaster-with-the-tax-policy-you-have

want a tax policy that allows our country to respond to people in need. I want a tax policy that puts the grown-ups in charge. I want a tax policy that addresses the inequities and racial disparities in our country. I want a tax policy that doesn't leave the poor, sick and brown to fend for themselves. I want a tax policy that funds cities and addresses real known risks to our citizens.
Now is the time to demand this. The insanity has gone on long enough. Individuals like me and others can not respond like a funded and organized government effort. Now if you'll excuse me, I may have to go and hunt down Grover Norquist and drown HIM in my bath tub.

Poor Grover - the political Says-a-me K Street character.

The poor boy's got more to worry about than Democratic video-playing Orc's hatin' on him and wantin' to drown him in his own bathtub.

The Conservative lunatic fringe he helped to encourage and grow in his little garden at the Insane Asylum, now are calling him an Islamisist threat to America because he's married to a Muslim woman.

The newsflash for me when I first heard that, was that Grover was married to a woman at all - since ever since I first saw him, by Gaydar would clang like the "DIVE! DIVE!! DIVE!!!" warning on a submarine.

To Dominionist Christians, ALL games are Satanic - except Monopoly, I guess.

    She plays a rogue.

...and very well too. We were raiding buddies until she pretty much dropped out of the game about a year ago.

  • TCinLA on October 05, 2012 4:33 PM:

Actually, finding Grover Norquist face down in a bathtub where the water was all red would be a good thing.

My 45 y-o kid tells me that level 85 was the top level you could accomplish until the new package was released a week ago. So a level 85 Orc is a very accomplished Orc.

I love it. The Democrats are running a very accomplished Orc for Senate. How's that for diversity in action?

FWIW, which probably isn't much, John Cole at Balloon Juice claims firsthand online experience with Lachowicz's character.

WoW is one of my vices. If I would have known that puttting Chuck Norris in an ad for WoW would stop all the Chuck Norris jokes in that game, especially around the Cross Roads, I would have suggested it a few years ago.

  • John on October 05, 2012 6:47 PM:

Thank Elune she was an Orc. Can you imagine the shame if she had been a gnome rogue?

  • schtick on October 05, 2012 8:02 PM:

Actually, a couple years ago orc rogues were very unusual, as I found out being one around pumpkin tossing time.

  • Just Guessing on October 06, 2012 10:21 AM:

Poor old Grover is probably more concerned that Allen West down in in FL announced he wouldn't sign the pledge again. Not sure you have to keep re-signing as opposed to getting your signature removed it so it may be mute, and just may be West trying to appear somewhat sane in his tight race to keep his seat. He was on the news last night - what a piece of work he is.

First they cam for the level 85 Orcs. I think that the Maine Republican party just messed with the wrong demographic. I'm not a gamer either, but there are a whoole lotta gamers.

I'm about to sign up for world of Warcraft with nickname MaineRepublicaParty to see what gamers think of that. Don't drown me in a bathtub worldofwarcrafters donate at http://www.colleenlachowicz.com/

Just like the Puritans, Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Moslems, Atheists, Wiccans, African Americans, Hispanics, gays, agnostics ... ad infinitum, you gamers must unite to fight prejudice. Don't be scared. You way outnumber US Moslems, Wiccans, atheists, Agnostics and Jews.
