October 14, 2012 12:13 PM The AP: deliberately offensive, or just braindead?

By Kathleen Geier

Question that the Asscociated Press will never ask: Do White People Support Romney Because He’s White?

Free answer: yes!!

A more interesting question: is the AP deliberately trolling us with this racist dreck, or could they actually be that clueless?

Update: this photo illustrates my point rather nicely.

Well, to be fair, Republicans thought they had a magic formula when the made Michael Steele chairman of the RNC. And Herman Cain probably got more support from Italians than black people. Just guessing. Mmmmm, pepperoni.

  • Anonymous on October 14, 2012 12:55 PM:

A better question would be: Do rich pricks support Romney because he's a rich prick?

  • TCinLA on October 14, 2012 1:00 PM:

Like most white Americans, they're probably too dumb to know what racists they are, since the ideology of Whiteness has What White People Think Is Right as the default "norm."

  • Celui on October 14, 2012 1:04 PM:

Really, AP, are you guys just having a bad day in the "let's invent a useless culture war question" department??? Such an embarrassment.

  • exlibra on October 14, 2012 1:09 PM:

Actually, Kathleen, they did -- kinda, sorta -- ask that question. Just in a wee bit roundabout way and not in the title line. Perhaps that's why you missed it:
Can blacks' support for Obama be compared with white voters who may favor his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, because he's white?

Now, if you chastised them for wasting space on asking stupid questions, with obvious answers, I'd have no quarrel with you. I've been knocking on doors, these past three Saturdays, asking people to vote for Obama *and* the two other Dem candidates -- for Senate and House. And in about a third of black households, the answer was "yes" to the President and "no" to the other two (both white). Have not had the same response in the white households; it was a straight "yes" or "no" for all 3.

To come back to the AP article... The only excuse I can offer is: weekend writers, searching for material.

  • Ralph Kramden on October 14, 2012 1:16 PM:

A comparable headline would be "Do Mormons support Mitt because he's Mormon?" But you'll never see that AP headline.

  • Jim on October 14, 2012 1:18 PM:

I think that you misinterpreted the headline run by AP.

The question that is implied is "why are there white people who will vote for Obama?"

  • LJL on October 14, 2012 1:19 PM:

The one thing I learned during the almost three years off and on that I spent in the South fifty years ago doing voter registration and organizing is that we northern whites were, according to the soon to become Republicans, the real racists. That is still what the American White Establishment believes.

Do White People Support Romney Because Hes White?

The answer is partially. More so that Willard's campaign is mostly "n!gger, n!gger, n!gger, sp!c, sp!c, sp!c, muslim, muslim, muslim - the n!ggers want to steal the white man's money, the sp!cs want to steal the white man's jobs, and the muslims want to kill the white man".

That ends today's edition of SATASQ!

Read an interesting comment on another website: an older Jewish hardware store owner had a black customer who came in and they talked about the first debate. The black man said that blacks immediately recognized what Romney was doing: he "boyed" Obama.

In other words what Romney simply exuded the attitude of you, boy, are my absolute inferior in every way because I am a rich and white and therefore master. How many Americans, including media pundits fell for it?

    Interesting thought, no?

  • giantslor on October 14, 2012 3:41 PM:

The main reason white people support Romney is that he's a Republican. The Republican party is the party of white privilege and barely disguised racist fear-mongering. White people would support the Republican candidate even if he were Allen West. Likewise, non-whites would support the Democratic nominee no matter the race, because it is the party that promotes diversity and equal opportunity.

jjm@3:09 My husband, who is Mexican American, immediately saw the same thing when Romney stated he was used to hearing lies from his 5 sons and then indicated Obama had a problem with the truth.

This aspect of the debate got little attention. In fact, I think that's one of the ways Romney scores points with some white voters, "putting Obama in his place". Similarly, many pundits completely miss the allusion because it is outside their experience. Matthews and Schultz were, now famously, exploding heads on MSNBC after the debate. They sure didn't pick up on the put down and they're supposed to be Obama supporters.

I have noticed a decidedly right-wing cant in the great majority of AP political stories this year. I suspect the wire service has gone extra cheap, relying more on right-wing commentators and the kind of reporters who get hit by a bus while covering a car accident.

AP is going for cheap and stupid. Hence, AP becomes more right-wing.

do you have any idea how long AP has been around, or how many news organizations, print, broadcast and online, rely on it? the hundreds of bureaus it operates and the 10s of thousands of people it employs?

and you want to compare it with myspace? not likely.
