Political Animal

December 31, 2012 6:20 PM Day’s End and New Year’s Watch

By Ed Kilgore

Wound up with the usual number of posts after hoping for a light blogging day. But chronicling the ragged end of the political year seemed necessary. As with many big and small tax provisions, we’ll just have to have some observations carry over into 2013. Here’s what we’ve got left for the day:

* Something sadly real amidst today’s Kabuki: Lillian Lewis, who introduced her husband John to electoral politics, died today.

* Barney Frank announces opposition to Chuck Hagel as a putative Secretary of Defense.

* Sean Hannity lost half his audience in the weeks after Obama’s re-election. Some nice New Year’s Eve schadenfreude, but I doubt Sean is having to downgrade brands of champagne tonight.

* At Ten Miles Square, Sarah Binder assesses the new “bipartisan” filibuster “reform” proposal with a jaundiced eye.

* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer gives a lukewarm rating to Ohio’s new plan to subsidize internships and co-op opportunities.

And in non-political news:

* Congrats to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for their win over Southern Cal in the Sun Bowl today, breaking a seven-year bowl losing streak. I’m a big-time Georgia Bulldog fan, but tend to cheer for the Dirt Daubers when they are playing other teams, particularly other teams coached by Lane Kiffin.

And speaking of bowl games, I’ll be watching several tomorrow (particularly the Capital One Bowl), but will be posting occasionally, especially if the other shoe drops on a fiscal deal.

Thanks to all readers for hanging with PA during 2012, and we’ll do what we can to keep you interested, informed and entertained in the New Year, as the wheel makes another turn.

I'll see your Wheel and raise you my annual NYE prayer: Don't lend your hand to raise no flags atop no ship of fools...

Ed, I thought you were from Georgia. Dirt Daubers? Dirt Dobbers. And those inscrutable little bits in the gravy are not called Chitterlings.

I second schtick's post. Happy New Year all.

Thank you for posting the news about Mrs. Lewis. Mr. Lewis is my mom's Representative. He is one of my personal heroes and a truly great American. I'm writing a sympathy note as soon as I'm done here.

Congratulations to team A for beating team B. The fans of team A have shown their immense superiority and masculinity. May the fans of team B bow their heads in shame and make offerings to express their humility.
